Remote start price question and information. Yes I know this is another thread!
Hey all,
I have the opportunity to have a DEI remote start unit professionally installed by a local reputable shop who has been in business over 15 years. He told me that the BEST method is to use the gray valet key and not mess with an external bypass module because they tend to be problems in the long run and they sometimes lose memory and the code to send the ignition that starts the car ( for example of the battery goes dead) Then it would have to be reprogrammed. He would install the DEI bypass module if I wanted for the same price but likes the key much better.
My question is, he would charge me $ 250 installed. Is that a good price and which method would you use? I am in Long island
Oh and the bypass modue he would use is the new 556 as opposed to the 555H if that means anything
Thanks!
Greg

hey greg
does the $250 include the parts too?? if so...i think that is a good deal..too bad i dont live in new york...
as for the 556 bypass module unit i think its just a universal unit instead of the honda/acura one? and that 556 one you have to put the valet key in it so that it sends some signal to the module so that it can start the car....read more here

Thanks for the reply!. Yes, the $250 includes the parts and installation. You are right with the 556 bypass unit. I will ask him if he can use the specific 555H unit. Both of those do not require the valet key but i like the fact that the 555H is specifically for Honda and acura. OR I could just let him use my Valet key and no unit for the same price. Then i wuld hav to buy another valet key from the dealer which would cost me $$$ What do you think? He says using the valet key is more reliable but i don;t know. Also, do you think it is wise to do it there as opposed to a dealer beacause of all the electroniceint he car and I don't want the dealer blaming somethingon me if it should break. Any thought on that?
Thanks!
Greg
Thanks!
Greg
i would rather go with the bypass module as you will still retain the safety feature of the coded key. if you use the valet key this will ultimately defeat that purpose. i have not heard too many people having problems with this method.
yeh i have no idea if to use the valet key or not...but the car needs something in order to make it "think" the key is in there or else you wont be able to remote start it
i prolly would never use the valet key in my life so i would just have them use that...
since you do live in NY take it to that dealer that installs it....i would rather pay that extra 150 or whatever and it is still under warranty and they know what they are doing since yours isnt the first one!
im still comtemplating on whether or not i should install it...dont feel like someone else tearing apart the underdash right now and maybe stripping some other wire and then screw up something....

Thanks for all the responses guys. I was wondering what to do and I think I will have him install it WITH the DEI bypass 555H . This will enable the car to start with the remote start ONLY when I activate it via the factory remote FOB pressing the locak button 2 or 3 times. I would rather not give me my valet EVEN IF I was not going to use it ever because I donlt like the idea of the key being in the car. $ 250 installed including parts and labor from a reputable shop who has a really nice store and who has been in biz doing this for 15 years, seems pretty reliable to me . I can't muster paying 5 to 6 HUNDRED for each car I have to get that installed by a dealer. It's a total rip. Any final thoughts?

250 installed is a really good price. 5-6 hundred sounds more like dealer prices and the only benefit from the extra cost is the fact that they will cover any warranty that may result from it. the only reason i mention it is because my aftermarket alarm on my bmw f'ed up some electrical things in the car. the car was out of warranty so i couldn't do much about it in regards to the dealer. but i would hate to have to go back and forth between dealer and alarm place to get work done.

but as long as the valet key is there and it has power such as near that module, couldnt the car be started by anyone? even with a walmart cut key? as the car is finding the proper code, even if its not coming from the ignition.....
yah, thats the problem. Once the cars got the code its just a matter of cracking open the steering column to touch some stuff together. The as far as the computer is concerned its getting the code, and it just needs to be told to start(done by turning the key). Does acura have some sort of lo-jack tracking?

yes i do believe acura has the lojack tracking system to be installed and covered by the warranty...call your local dealer and find out!
