Radar Detector issue

Well, wasn't sure where to put this....so I'll put under "Electronics"

Recently purchased my Acura, just before Thanksgiving. So far no complaints....I owned a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP.

I have a Cobra radar detector that I had mounted up by the headliner, just about the bottom of the blue strip across the top of the windshield.
In the Grand Prix it was over by the Mirror.
In the Acura I have it mounted over by drivers pillar up by the visor.

So the problem is this.....the laser sensor on the detector keeps going nuts. If I accelerate, it gives me a laser warning....one time it did it pulling into my garage....
So I tried replacing the first unit with a new one....same issues!
Replaced the second unit with a third one....nope, same thing.

So the questions are...
  • Is anyone else running a radar detector?
  • If so what brand?
  • Where is it located?
  • Do you have any issues with false warnings?

Now, I know according to the owners manual that there is supposedly some sort of laser sensor that is functioning during the use of the "cruise control".
Could this item be causing the havoc with detector?
I even tried contacting Cobra....of course no reply there.
It doesn't do it all the time....does it activate when the cops laz me? Yeppers!
I know automatic doors on businesses will kick off the K and Ka band....but this is the laser sensor....thoughts....suggestions.....ideas from you younger electronically savy engineer types?

Im running a Cobra 9945...or 9955 (cant recall)
Mine is about 6 inches down from the center of the windshield (hard wired).
I went through and did the custom settings on it that i knew i needed (own Cobra radar in previous car for 6 yrs) and i never get a false warning. I love it.

From what i can gather the laser from CC does not/would/should not interfere. Could it? possibly. But i imagine that the laser would be somewhere hidden out of sight and pointing straight toward the ground. I could be wrong, need to look this up im in a hurry and about to get out. Hope that helps.

I have a escort 9500ix.
the only time I get a laser warning is when I go and try to take the unit off the glass, or putting it back on the windshield.

so, my hand is somehow making the laser go off.

have you tried putting your cobra in a diff. location?

Running a V1 mounted just below the tint strip, to the left of the mirror, powered through the rear window fuse. Zer issues.

I am running a Beltronics V940 and have it mounted just under the mirror with no issues. Sometimes direct sunlight can cause false laser alerts.

Nope.....and the topper.....two nights ago I'm coming home from work about midnight....I see this dark shape along the highway sitting behind a road sign...so I'm prolly 50 yards away and I flash my high beams up....low and behold its one of our cities finest porkers sitting there....glance at the speedometer, somewhere just below 65...speed limit is 60.....
so as I'm topping a bridge, I looked behind to see him leaving his little hiding spot....on the other side of the bridge, I see these lights coming fast behind me...sure enough little piglet was pissed I flashed him.....comes up to the car and says he used "LIDAR" and popped me going 69...

Well, folks my detector never chirped...not a peep...its been pretty quiet...I've had others Laz me...but this kid was flat out lying and he knew I caught him lying....

Anyway nope I haven't moved it...I like where it is...I think it's working fine...just occasionally when conditions are right it gives a false reading, which is usually in the neighborhood...so unless porky pig is sitting on someones lawn tractor mowing grass in January.....

I have a Valentine 1 hardwired at the top in the middle of the AS1 line.

Many say don't mount any radar detectors on the AS1 line because it will reduce radar/laser detection. I say BULL SHIT. I've had my Valentine 1 mounted there for over 8 months now and I detect all signals x, k, ka, and laser just fine without a problem. I even detect those bands from the rear without a problem.

But like you do, I would, and still do, occasionally get false alarm Laser alerts. I really don't know why. I remember when I had a iPhone and I would get off the phone with someone, as soon as I would press End Call or the other person on the other line would hang up my V1 would start shooting Laser alert. Got rid of the iPhone (not because of that reason) and now I still get random laser alerts still. Sometimes while driving in my neighborhood, sometimes on the highway. Not very often though. This would happen maybe once a day no more than 1-4 times a week

I know for a fact that it works though. I was driving home from school last week and as I was coming over a hill driving in the far left fast lane I saw a cop 100 yards ahead with his gun out as soon as I got to the top of the hill and my V1 alerted Laser. I was going 69MPH in a 60 and still got away with it

Could be the electronics in the Acura vs. your Pontiac. I have an Escort 8500X50 and owned it for about 6 years. I have it hardwired into the fusebox and have it mounted to the right of the RVM and just below the heavy blue tint.
I have found over time I get more and more false alerts for Laser. Usually when I accelerate and the doors lock at 10MPH as I am pulling away from my garage, I get the laser alert.
If it laser falses on acceleration then it is picking up engine ignition noise. Escort says they can fix it. I haven't done anything about it yet. I know you don't have an Escort but could be a similar issue.

i have an x50 mounted a little less than halfway up in the middle of the windshield, my old x50 had false laser readings but it turned out that aspect of the radar had failed and i decided to just get a new one. Zero problems with the new one maybe that could be it, just a thought though.
