Play Music from Android Phone Thru Stereo
All,
I have been searching/reading about how to connect my Android-based phone to my '05 Non-Navi TL now for the past couple of days. I see plenty on iPod/iPhone integration through devices like iSimple, Dice, and USASpec, but I haven't seen much about Android-based phones.
I guess I am looking to just connect my phone to the stereo via the AUX (3.5) jack from the phone to the car, but since the car doesn't have an AUX jack, I need an intermediate device (USB also seems to be the other connection option).
Doing a Google search, I came across the "Honda Acura 03-11 Auxiliary AUX-IN and Bluetooth Interface Adapter(GROM-AUX-HON1)" from Grom Audio. I'm not too concerned with the Bluetooth feature, unless someone thinks that I should consider it. I am fine connecting a jack to my phone. Being able to use the steering wheel/radio controls is a must (which appears to work with this device).
Or maybe I need this device from Grom - Honda Acura 2003-2012 GROM USB Android interface car kit(GROM-AND2-HON1)
Has anyone had experience with the above mentioned device. Are there other alternatives? Hopefully the masterful members of Acurazine can get me pointed in the right direction.
Thank you for your time.

Cool, thats a new solution to one of the many problems!!!!
if you do decide to do it, tell us about it!!!
we only have outdated technology to work with.
I hook up my android device with the P.I.E. X3
but has no charging capabilities and is not controllable through steering wheel

I'm definitely intrigued by this, although if you follow the link to the google play store, some of the reviews on the software aren't that great. I think it may be great for what it does (gives you steering wheel control, picks up where you left off when turning the car back on, etc.), but it doesn't look like you could use it for audio streams (i.e., you want to use Pandora).
...although it does give you a 3.5mm jack to use, so if you really wanted that feature you could just connect the extra cable to your phone.
For those that use XM, the manual says that you must disconnect the factory SAT to gain use of your device (as opposed to iSimple's setup, where it will pass it through).
I'm definitely considering this now though... my 3rd gen ipod isn't going to last forever, and is already a pain to sync (battery is almost non-existant and it charges over firewire and not USB). I was considering trying out a combination of the blackberry audio gateway and an app to automatically start the music player once it's paired (if it doesn't do that already), but steering wheel control would be really nice.
Hmmm.

I've been looking for a way to get steering wheel controls for my android phone. Already have an isimple, but you need to buy their bluetooth module, or a apple 30 pin to bluetooth adapter to make it work. Both are really not idea solutions, but a honest to god USB music port like the newer hondas have.... that would be awesome.
I didn't buy the GROM module because I read some reviews with people having issues with them working properly. I went with the NEO Prolink Plus with BT Audio and couldn't be happier.
I have full control from my steering wheel when the iPod (nano and classic) are connected, I still use the factory HFL for calls, and it also has an AUX jack. Also, when I connect my android via BT, it has BT Audio control from the steering wheel too! It's a slick system for $200.00.

Thanks for the update. I took a quick look at the NEO Prolink Plus website and it does look impressive - nice to hear actual user experience as well.
I think, for the time being, I'm going to rock old-school
and simply burn tracks to disc. I have tons of them and it only takes a few minutes to do.
Thanks again for replying - much appreciated

OK. Here's what I do. I know you want steering wheel controls but I actually can't imagine how limiting that is compared to a phone's touch screen. With the apps I have running at once (Nav, streaming music, hot spot, etc) I can't see how wheel controls would be very good except for something like next/prev track. The other odd thing with my phone is how it handles the HFL when something's plugged into the headphone jack. So basically I don't use HFL but just the phone's speaker phone. The caller plays through the car stereo but the phones mic is used. Callers say it isn't as clear as HFL but I don't talk much in the car so it's not a big deal.
Anyway here it is.

So, I cut off the round base part of the Garmin Nuvi Mount Adapter and glued/screwed it to the right side of the cassette. Then used soft velcro on the cassette to keep it from rattling.
Side View. There is a screw running from the bottom of the cassette up into the ball mount.

Installed

With phone. Can easily swivel 90deg for landscape.

- I already had a Blitzsafe iPod adaptor in the car so I got one of these cables from Gromm http://gromaudio.com/store/accessori...-c-ipd2jk.html. Originally had the ipod cable come out in the center compartment (between seats). Any aux in adapter you chose should work. I just happened to already have one.
- Wired additional micro-USB power from power outlet in in the center compartment. Not all USB power adaptors are created equal. You need to get one that does not put the phone in USB mode but rather AC charge mode. (Thanks to Apple for a bastardized USB charger marked). This one works really well since it comes with an adaptor to make sure a Droid goes into AC charge mode. My phone still charges with nav running and full brightness. http://www.satechi.net/index.php/sat...12-car-lighter
- Ran both wires under the metal trim on right side of center console.
- Gave life to Frankendapter.

- Cassette - Found in basement !
- Garmin Nuvi Mount Adapter - http://www.mountguys.com/product_p/145-00775-55.htm
- Mobile grip - This thing's great. Got one for my wife's car too. Her Razr Maxx fit's good to. Kids also clamp ipod touches in it too. http://www.mountguys.com/product_p/mg001.htm

Adobeman,
So you have a Droid Charge too? Who would have guessed?
This phone is appropriately named since you almost always have to 'charge' it. Looking forward to getting rid of mine for a Galaxy SIII or an iPhone5 soon. I'm on my SIXTH (and final) one since May of last year. Aside from Verizon's coverage, the great display and the sound quality are about all this phone has going for it.
Using a cassette adapter for as often as I use its music player in the car works for me. You just have to remember to pull the 3½" plug out of the top to make or receive a call.

I would assume BT is the way to go for better sound quality. I was not impressed by the sound quality when I connected the Nexus S to the Bitone directly with a 3.5 coaxial to RCA adapter cable. Adobeman's tape player method is another way to go about it but I would prefer using Adobeman's DVDA software to burn DVDA for better sound quality.

The Charge gets a really bad rap but when I got it it was the best 4G LTE phone in VZW's line up. And after rooting, removing/freezing bloatware, and tuning memory use a bit it's great. I also prefer a custom launcher (Go Launcher) over default TouchWiz. I generally get a full day out of the battery but do have a spare if I need it. I still think being able to pop in a new battery is a better option than a non-user replaceable (iPhone, Razr Maxx, etc.) I too am eyeballing an GS-III. With ICS it will be better since you can disable all the VZW crap-apps. But any Android phone from VZW will come with obscene amount of useless bloatware...and that's best completely removed after rooting! Android get's knocked a lot but most of the time it's because the phone vendors F up good phones with crap.
So a few hours ago, I came home from the Verizon store with my new Galaxy SIII. WOW!!!! Blows away the Charge in EVERY AREA. Phone calls in the car over Bluetooth are clearer at BOTH ends. No more having to hit the steering wheel button and say "Transfer". It does that automatically now!
Then I plugged the cassette adapter into the headset jack. WOW AGAIN! The fidelity of music was as good as we could possibly expect from our factory system. Apparently the sound quality in the SIII is superior to the Charge overall.
Pull the trigger Adobeman, you won't regret it!

My Galaxy Note uses a Yamaha chip (same as SII) and sounds great on the TL.
If you guys haven't yet, check out XDA's forum. It'll help you get the most out of your devices and drop all the carrier bloatware.
Help! You folks sound like you could figure out my challenge. I can follow directions, but I'm not an engineer. My TL says "unsupported" when I attach my Motorola DEFY (android) via USB cable. Thanks for any suggestions.
I'm guessing you have a 4g TL otherwise you wouldn't be able to attach it via USB at all. Might check in the 4g a/v forum.
So, I went back to the task yesterday. This time I just turned on my Android genre (podcast) files, found the Bluetooth area on the TL Audio menu, turned up the volume, and, viola, I could listen over the "stereo".
It came to me that, if I use Bluetooth for my phone calls, I must be able to use it for other wireless communications. It's just that that handy-dandy USB connection in the armrest compartment seemed to need a job!
So for our coming trip, I've recorded numerous CDs to the HDD and now can hear podcasts+ from the phone. No more disc packages lying around the car. Even a grandma can figure this stuff out!

Buy these two things and it works like a charm...
Aux. bluetooth dogle
Tape cassette aux adapter.
Amazon.com: eForCity Car Audio Cassette Tape Adapter for iPod/Sony MP3 CD: MP3 Players & Accessories
I jump in my car hit the tape button and out comes the music..

should just shell out the money and get something like this:
http://www.gromaudio.com/store/usb_a...interface.html
so you can directly plug your phone through usb for lossless quality and/or bluetooth.
I have the grom interface installed in my 04 TL and it works great. I purchased the USB unit with the Bluetooth adapter and the Galaxy S phone adapter. all three work seamless and i can stream all audio from my phone thru the Bluetooth. it also displays everything on my Nav screen, all while maintaining my steering wheel control. i have no problems with the Aalinq software i dowloaded from the app market. in my honest opinion its a great buy.

i used the Grom Audio Bluetooth interface for Android (Honda Acura 2003-2012 GROM USB Android interface car kit(GROM-AND2-HON1))
it works fine in either of 3 modes - Bluetooth (the only one i use), aux and Flash drive. it feels good to be playing music and have full control from steering wheel while hearing my google maps navigation from the stereo speakers. gone are the days of feedback sound from the tape deck with the cassette adapter. there is only one cable and thats the USB cable that i use to charge my phone. more info available if needed.

Hello, So I've been doing a lot of research on the grom audio interfaces. I have a galaxy s4, if I get the grom with the usb connection, does that cable charge the phone as well and am I able to use pandora, spotify, etc.
Or if I get the grom with just the aux cord, I can use any music app, but will i lose sound quality?
Just bought my 05 acura tsx last week!

I just finished installing the GROMAND2 (USB & EXT2 - 3mm audio jack) in my 05 TL using a Nexus 5 with AAlinQ.
The USB should charge your phone (works w/ my Nexus and BB Bold). I haven't tried Pandora or Spotifiy but probably will since AALinQ sucks! The interface looks fine (large & easy to maneuvre) BUT it's not stable. Random volume (usually way too low), random playback speed (from Chipmunks to Barry White), random crashes. I'm about to try other apps and sacrifice the steering wheel controls! UGH!

You can use any player you like but so far only the AAlinq app lets you use the steering wheel and in dash stereo controls.
I just tried a trial version of an app called Poweramp that is pretty good. Very customizable but not free and of course no steering wheel / stereo controls.
Happy hunting!
