Navi screen/dashboard not working, audio cutting in and out...
Hey Guys,
Its been awhile since ive posted on here, ive been able to find most answers to my question by searching, but I havent been able to find a concrete answer to this one!
So my navigation had a disc read error for awhile, I finally decided to ship it off to alpine to refurb it, which was successful. About a month or so after installing the refurbed Navi unit, the display/touch screen would intermittenly go black and the navi would have to reboot up again etc.
Then, after a while, the navi screen went completely blank and was completely unresponsive, as did the audio display in the dash above. The screen is still on (I can see it glow when its dark) but it is not functional.
This really pissed me off because I was unable to see see what radio station I was tuned to and I dont have access to any settings (my clock is still set an hour early) ugh!
Now my audio is starting to cut out. Randomly for a few hours it just wont work, and then it will magically turn back on.
Does anyone have any ideas? I talked to the dealer and they checked the fuses etc and didnt see anything wrtong, They want to charge me $250 to take apart the console and see if there are any electrical issues. They seem to think the display is shot and itll be super expensive to replace.
I'm hoping you guys will be able to help me troubleshoot and figure out a cheaper solution. Thanks! (sorry for the drawn out post, im kind of venting here

Check all the connections on the back of the DVD drive. I don't have a factory harness but I have problems with them occasionally. Once it goes out, go back there and see if pushing or manipulating the wires/connectors shows any change in the screen.
I dont't have an exact answer, but
They removed and sent my audio to alpine to get fixed. Without the audio connections, my Nav wasn't working and just like you said it had a black screen on and at night I was able to see that the black screen was glowing up a little.
Later, they sent my Nav unit because of some problem...without the nav unit in the trunk, I was able to play audio, but audio display in the dash above wasn't showing any info. It was only showing the time and temperature stuff.
Also yeah nav screen is totaly black, even audio function. (Without navigation unit in the trunk)
Good luck..

I just got the same symptom yesterday.
Went over a very minor bump and saw the navi display cut out. Then it rebooted to the map again, and after another minute, cut out again. Now problem is solid with screen black with faint back-light and occasional line that flickers. Tried re-seating DVD unit connectors in trunk with no change and pulled battery connectors with no change.
I've been searching all through the forums and see a lot of people having the problems with the Alpine Navi DVD unit and sending off to CA for refurbish, however it seems that when that goes you get a disc read error I believe or the drive wearing a line into the DVD. (my DVD is spotless)
Has anyone seen the blank screen fixed by the Alpine refurbish? Would like to try to isolate to screen or DVD before sending drive to California. Wouldn't have minded before when price was $158, but now it's ~$350. And that's only if I know someone in the US to send it (I'm a canuck), otherwise it's $1000 I'm told by Alpine rep.
The temperature/clock display screen up above works fine and after reconnecting the battery, I was able to re-enter radio code on radio to have that work, but it still does some funky stuff. To turn on the radio I have to hit the power knob 2 times fast and it goes on sometimes.
My next step is to take apart the dash and re-seat the display connectors. I would like to have some test to perform while back there but the Service Manual pdf I have is missing pages 22-335 to 23-13 (the whole section on Navi and Audio Electronics).
Can anyone steer me in the right direction if they've seen something similar? The cars got 170K miles and a new display screen will sink me.
Thanks in advance guys.

Just wanted to follow up in case others have the same issues as me. Sent my Navi-DVD unit to the Torrance CA Alpine Depot and for $358US they refurbished and sent back. That ended up being my problem. Invoice showed:
Replaced:
IPF PWB, Unit, BN-M30U_3
Mech, DVD (DV36T02C) (BN434AC)
BKT, SPRING NUT2 ATN-A051620
I imagine a lot of people will be seeing this happen as our DVD ROM's get older. Dealership wanted $3800 to replace the DVDROM
, so still a pretty good deal from Alpine.

I am having the exactly same problem, and because the audio is also not working. I am thinking whether to change all the connection harness if have the resource to get them or just replace with a new andio an nav system. That will also be much cheaper than the dealer 3500 fix.
