I had one in one of my Miatas, but the key had to be in the ignition in the "Run" position to work. It's a cool gimick, but I don't think I'm going to do it again.

There is always a way to do anything, I just don't think it would be worth the time/effort to set up the car to be completely keyless.

If you want to do the regular push button start, you can, but it's still going to require you to turn the key to the "on" position before you push the starter. In my opinion there is no point in doing this either because you can just turn the key one more time to start the car......

I don't think that it would be that appropiate. Sure you can have the push button start for the "cool/eyecandy" factor, but keep in mind that you would still need to whip out the key and put it into the keyhole. Something like your Mercedes' smart key or the Mitsubishi FAST Key would require an electronics mod too complex for the majority of us. IMO its easier to twist + start the car rather than moving your hand to a bright red button

even kp's RFID based push button start module requires you to whip out your keys and place them in the cupholder (within 5 inches of the RFID antenna) .. so it's not like the benz or the new acura's where you can keep your keys in your pocket....

no good solution for the original poster.

My wife has a 2008 infiniti with the push button dealie.. and i do like how you don't have one hundred keys dangling on the dash in the key hole... they are tucked away in her purse... the push button is nice, but i'm not missing it on my 2004 TL.

I'm sure there will be a longer range "active" system availble in the very near future.

However, the thing that most people don't realize is the amount of modifications necesarry to the vehicle to allow keyless start and operation.

First, you need a secure way to operate the igntion that has a long life (battery power is the killer here) and won't leave the vehicle stranded if the fob dies or is broken.

Second, you need to bypass the mechanical steering wheel lock. Doing so will allow you to "safely" turn the wheel without the key in the ignition. I say "safely" because if done incorrectly it could be deadly (think about if the steering wheel locks up at a 15 degree angel on the highway!).

Third, you need to bypass the OEM security system that prevents the car from being started without the key. This would be the same type of module that allows remote starts to work.

Once you got those things you're ready to install the electronics to do the push button start.

I'm considering and would like to see if someone use 4G TL's Smart Keyless system and mod it into 3G TL.

I think it'll be awesome!

By the way, I'd like to also see if anybody could mod the Lexus IS 250/350 ignition dial test, it's freaking awesome.

Having these two mod into TL-S, it'll be sick!

I would be extremely surprised to see anyone ever retrofit an OEM system, they are just too integrated in to the vehicle. You would practically have to rewire the entire car, and replace all the electronics. The OEM systems use multiple antennas all over the car and have switches at each entry point (each door and the trunk). You would also have to do the interior pieces and the steering column as well. I'm all for modding cars, but for OEM pushbutton start it truely is just easier to buy a car that already has it from the factory!

integrating into the TL would be crazy, even more crazy than the Navi. many switches would need to be rewired throughout the car, then you run into safety issues and then theft issues. As well if you encounter a problem in the middle of nowhere, you won't have any one or any tools to help you. I know that keyless entry like the 4G is amazing, but it is that hard to insert a key and turn?

I did a little bit research, in order to have a full smart entry/smart start, sure, it's a lot of work, I went on 4G TL's part list, I've notice it's not easy.

There are tons of parts like antennas in the lower driver dash board, left fender, left door, trunk, new key fob (I like RL's better than 4G TL's) and so on...

I did comparison between 4G TL, 2G RL and 1G RL. It's a lot of work, not impossible but just complicated.

The whole mod for full Smart Entry/Smart Start could be around 3K.
