Hey guys.

Since I just installed my Navi unit, I want to get full access to this beautiful screen.

My end goal is to get an iPhone to play video and audio in my TL and retain the ability to see the text on the screen and control my iPhone from the steering wheel and from my iPhone. Is this too much to ask? lol

I was planning on getting the following:
- DOMs
- Video splitter (anything anyone can recommend?).. I want to get this to split the video input into the DOMs between the iPhone and a dvd player so I can retain the reverse camera.
- Monster cables for the video wire
- Fog Light button with DVD logo to control the Navi screen display from Navi to Vid Ins.. Does someone have the link to how to do this? I have been searching but couldnt find it.

- Dice Cradle with video out.
- iSimple unit so i can see text and control the iPhone from the car.. how does this unit connect to the car? Also, how does it work with the extra Aux in? Is there a button you ahve to push to switch it?

- Small DVD player to fit in center console.. Which ones fit? I saw one in here, but couldnt find this link either.

Would this setup work for what I want?

These are my goals as well, I've started my project. I'm making a totally custom mount for my iPhone. I have the design in my head I just have yo make it reality. Lol! But like I said I started.

As far as getting full on screen text display and controll plus video I don't think there's a kit for that. The dice video cradle won't work on the iPhone 3.0 OS or higher. You will only get audio. I know it has the video output in back, but it won't work. You'll have yo use apples composite cables like elegant used for getting video.

For the video switcher I opted for the jensen unit it was only $20 from amazon. It should work fine, I'll be switching from my DVD player in the rear armrest to video on my phone. The signal will go to the two 7" monitors in my visors.

If I get off my ass I should finish in a week or so, making the custom mount is whats gonna take up most of the time.

i have exactly the same set up as elegant but i have mine wired up with two headrest monitor also.

like the previous poster stated, the dice unit wont work un less u use a old iphone with v2.1.

for the video splitter i have the jensen unit which is being shipped to me right now, the one i had was a defective one. ill update to see what happens once i get it in. right now im just using one input.

i dont think the simple will work as it require the the iphone dock. the isimple doesnt sent out a video fed. it will be your choice between getting wheel control and text or video. i opt for video.

4guage wire to the trunk to power this and my hids
boyo vtk350 rear view camera
2 power acoustic 7 inch lcd
pie x3 unit
oem apple ipod cable
made a leather iphone bracket with proclip mount
i believe there is more but ill update later, the total project ran me around 1000 total after getting everything.

 

Argh.. it won work with 3.0 or higher!! man that sux! I may just go the same route as elegant type s .. just sux i wont be able to control it from the steering wheel..

what jensen swicther are you using? (I looked on amazon and couldnt find it.. is it 12 volt or are you converting it somehow? let me know!

what dvd player are you using in the rear armrest? (I want to retain the cup holders in tehre because I always have people in my car)

After doing some more research, I may just do the OEM apple Ipod cable, PIE x3 and Doms Nav with some video switcher... this setup should cost me around 400.00 .. I HOPE! .. lol .. I really wish there was another alternative that allowed for text and radio controls ..

well i spent a extra 120 for allthe relays and wiring since i wanted to protect everything, i might have over done it. but yea for 400 you will be able to get the
oem apple cable - 50 at apple store =[
doms- retail is 250 i believe
monster video cable was 12 bucks for me, get the 14feet.
pie x3 is around 80
so with a 400 budget you are almost dead on =]. ask me if you need any help. it took me 4 days to do my install =[

 

4 days?! holy crap? Why so long? the headrest monitors? My navi install took me 2 days.. about 10 hours total.. So I am guessing this should take me about 5 hours.. since everything is pretty much plug and play.. I dont plan on getting a dvd player anytime soon .. maybe next year unless someone is selling a 1/2 din one for CHEAP..

 

Bzyrice, the switcher I used was the jensen ksw41, with my set-up I will have iPod text controls via radio and steering wheel, plus video just won't be able to control that part with the car just iPod. That the reason for the custom iPod mount. I'll put up pics in a week or so. Look for it.

same here im using the jensen ksw41. it has 4 inputs and 3 video out.
the install took me that long because i redid everything and the headrest monitor since that was a pita.

yah thats what i figured.. I havent had to mess with making headrest monitors yet.. too bad im low on cash right now to do that stuff.. oh well .. :/

It will also allow for multiple input devices and output devices all in one unit.. but I just called and it is 550.00 +shipping!! (But this will allow me to upgrade with TV headreasts in the future if I want and add other devices like an xbox or dvd player without any switches)
I talked to the sales guy and he said everything hooks up in the trunk also.. which is nice.. There are plugs for Audio and video and only 2 wires need to be cut from the XM wires to wire the audio in and it retains XM.. I also asked if I purchased a new car if the unit is portable.. he said as long as it is acura/honda it will work, but if I change brands like to Lexus, for example, I can send the unit back and get it upgraded.. forgot to ask for how much tho...

When I was exploring my options, I came to a dead end and realized the only way to retain video, text and steering wheel control was to do it via 2 options:

1. Hook up iSimple and Hook up Apple AV cable and throw it on a selector
2. Rewire the iSimple dock connector to activate the video pinout so that a video cable can be constructed.

Option 1 is literally installing 2 ipod integration units so that by using the iSimple you can have audio w/ text and steering wheel control but NO video.

Option 2 is taking the iSimple dock connector and using a pinout diagram that I was able to get online and trying to soder another video cable into the leads where the video cable should be and constructing your own RCA video cable and now you have added video out to your iSimple dock connector.

I would shy away from the DICE cradles, as they just look very plasticy and not "Elegant" at all so that's that. I just ended up settling for video and music and sacrificed text and steering wheel functionality. But I'll be honest, with the placement of my phone on my custom proclip dock... I do not miss the steering wheel controls at all, because its very easy to control it from the iPhone and I actually prefer to control it that way as well. Because remember with the iSimple if you want the text to be dispayed on your screen, it locks you out from controling your iphone manually, and if you switch it to manual mode, then you lose the text on the screen, so you can never win.. LOL.

I'll try to share any knowledge that I was able to come across, and maybe there is something that can be done now that there is more interest.

 

I was thinking about splicing into the I simple also.. Where did you find the pin out?

I am not sure if I will be able to solder these connections since the plug for the iPhone is so small.. maybe a hybrid between the iSimple and the Apple AV cable would work.. from what I have been reading, to get video out you need the chip from the AV cable (or is that a program out there that allows you to bypass the chip?).. So, not sure how that could work out.. taking apart a 50.00 cable and the iSimple cable might not be the best thing for me to do right now since I am low on cash to be messing around with stuff.. and having to rebuy them again..

I may go with your setup Elegant.. just without the proclip.. I want to see what jptl04 has up his sleeve before I start buying stuff..

Well the best way to do it, is buy an iSimple which comes with the 2G iPhone charging cable which if you have a 3G iphone is useless. So you can mess around with that cable first since you have to buy the 3G iphone cable anyways. The chip is already embedded into the iSimple cable so you don't have to worry about that. That chip prevents the infamous error message "This accessory is not made to work with the iPhone"


I haven't had time to mess with it too much, and its just too much trouble for me to get that functionality, so I settled.

I plan on getting a new iPhone 3gs which will be coming with 3.1+ OS I am assuming..

So, I just found that I have a few more challenges.. including the fact that apple has locked out the TVOUT option with the new OS. Even with their own Apple AV Cable!! (At least this is what I am reading on these iPhone sites).. on the apple site they say that the only way to get the iPhone 3G and 3GS to get Video out is to get not only the Apple AV Component cable AND the Apple universal dock! wow.. those soldering connectors would suck to work with!! Any ideas on creating a cable to connect the wires from the Apple AV Cable (after cutting it up) and making an adaptor to fit the iSimple? Might be easier then actually trying to solder all the pins.. Kind of like how the plug and play systems work for our car.

Wait.. I have the 3G iPhone and the apple AV cable with OS 3.0 and have no issues with video. And I've also docked my friends 3G-S onto my dock and played videos with his too.. so I'm not buying this entire lock out thing with their cables.

ehh, just to add, i have the latest and greatest software update on my 3G iPhone 3.1 i think and I can youtube no problem on my navi screen. My setup is similar to Elegant's... only better cuz my car is an 'S'.

btw, I'll also add that I much prefer to have the text and controls on either the iPhone or iPod, not on the nav or text bar with temp controls. A) it's more room, B) it's more legible C) the controls for scrolling through albums/songs and fast forwarding are far better on the iPhone/iPod vs the 'integrated' setups. Plus I'd rather have video playback for my passengers.

dBex: the proclip doesnt have a video out. it is just a holder, an expensive one i might say, but works great!!!!! i love it. for video and audio out you will need to purchase an oem apple composite cable which is 50 dollars.

acktl05: for me i have the piex3 as i can now have 3 extra component for audio. you can use that or buy the isimple.

I think what I need it something that comes from the dvd player (audio output) and a way to splice into an audio source. Some say xm? If i do that will i loose the xm? or it will have both the xm volume and video volume? or will the video volume orderride the xm noise when in use?

pie x3 is what you are looking for acktl05, they dont elimiate your xm. just push the button on the switch for the pie x3 to switch between the inputs. as for where tyo get it ill say ebay. i might sell mine but thats if my second module come in.

Yah I am leaning more and more towrds the proclip, and the reason why is because I really really like not having to plus in the phone to a wire.. instead jsut dropping it in... and it swivels.. definitely a good find Elegant!

I have to say that my only complaint, is that the video out doesn't work with all iphone apps.

It works with youtube and the 'iPod' option on the phone, but apps like weather or news more movie trailers still play on the iphone only.
I also don't get the prompt like that thread linked above. I either get the output on the navi or iPhone no questions asked.

if there is a setting where i can change this, please let me know.
