That would work but I actually think the stock HU is a nice piece of equipment, it outputs a nice clean signal and having the CD, radio, and tape (yes tape) is a nice feature. As far as the GPS goes, I plan on adding a bluetooth and using an app like Garmin USA which actually does not need a wifi connection to work, only drawback is that its a huge app like 1.5g so it would work like a standalone unit like a nuvi.
Agreed. I like to see the creativity and patience you have in working on this project - building your own harness for the HVAC units, impressive haha

Loving this thread.

Did you off with a W/NAV or Non NAV TL?

Im just wondering about the wiring harness for the climate controls. I have NAV. If i take out the Nav screen, i will run into any issues with the climate controls

Yes, non navi and the Hvac screen is moving to the bottom. Here's a pic of what it'll look like. Scroll down to post #103 by Cirith. https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...=852090&page=3

I'm in the process of putting in a nexus 7 32g with connectivity in my TL. I'm working on relocating the havoc screen right now. The top was easy. I'll try to post some picture soon. By the way great job to person who did the above work.

Ipad mini has an option where you can switch the button as a screen lock or mute and switch the screen lock option to the screen.

The kindle usb cable is better suited for the mod since its design is better for our needs. I'll try to find a pic ture of one, for the aux cable i just bought a 90 degree from radio shack and stripped the outer layer. Now it fits great, just needs a little grinding to the side of the buttons.

MODS, i think that you should merge this thread with the "Android Tablet Integration" thread they are on the same subject.

If you look above, people have relocated their Non Nav Screen below the radio.

This person went all out and moved it up to the clock display area.
https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-94/diy-guide-non-nav-acer-tablet-install-lots-pics-872367/

If you have NAV, this is already displayed at the clock display area

^^^ Austin, dont replace the screen with the ipad....infact since you have the screen and everything in place, just use an apple TV/etc (just like John - ebelp did) and call it a day.....

remove the navi drive and other stuff out of the car....the iphone will act like your navigation/music input and you have everything already wired in....

Apple TV doens't really do what I would want it to though.

My navi has taken a dive off the deep end. I had the disc read error and was going to fix it like many others have by cleaning the laser. I got into the trunk and before I unplugged everything I realized the disc was still in it. Turned my car back on and the navi has no power, can't get the disc out. Now it tell me "Please check disc."

So now I guess I'm gonna drive to the dealer and see what I need to do. If it's $360 to fix I mid as well just buy another iPad Mini new for $330 or find a used one.

^^^ Austin, I do not have a navi and dont know if the navi is a slot insert or a tray insert type DVD....if its a tray insert, this will work:

every tray insert type disc has a manual release....turn the power off, and the manual release will be a very small pin hole....you can insert a very thin pin () and it will pop the tray open....you can pull the tray out and take the DVD from it....clean the lens....

put everything back together and then reinsert the disc....hope it works for ya bud....

couple options here (and sorry for the )

1> if your disc is stuck in there and wont eject and your navi has power:

skip to 1:35.... and i would recommend something strong and skinny but not sharp....

2> if your disc is stuck in there and navi has no power....remove the navi from the trunk and give it 12V/gnd right from the battery or some other 12V power source (run 2 wires)....try ejecting the disc now....if the disc still doesnt eject then try using the above method....

3> if nothing works, then i guess you are outta luck bro....

I've always liked the idea of a CarPC/Carputer, but since the iPad mini came out, it's a better fit!

Okay yesterday I went to the dealer and was informed it is now $470 for Alpine to fix my Navi eff them. HIGHLY considering this install now.

OP, all you had to do for this is pretty much run the iSimple to the iPad and that's it? (For power and music)

I'd also like to see the pic of the 6' cable and how that's hooked up to the iPad. (Being that you already have the iSimple plugged in.)

Also I see your home button is open but my navi TL doesn't have that :/ my screen is a rectangular border like so

did you cut your bezel at all?

^^^ Austin, my would be to do the following:

Iphone --> Apple TV --> HDMI to RCA converter --> Doms Nav to Go -- Navi Screen

Just like John (ebelp did)....this would be the simplest and cheapest route...the minute you try to custom fab the bezzle to fit the ipad mini/nexus, you are going to open a whole new can on worms....also even if you replace everything, you wont be able to run your AC without the NAVI screen unit (there is the AC control unit inside it) and hence you will have to stash it some where behind...

Do look into John's build before you pull the trigger

/ 2 cents LOL

^^^ plus this way, you can add a rear camera and have it display to your navi display....or if you end up getting the Blackvue/GoPRO, you can display it to your navi screen (this is how I have it setup....instead of a navi screen I have a $50 2-input HD screen )....if you put in the ipad or nexus, you can put a video-in for them

Not entirely true, if you have NAV Unit, you can easily remove the NAV screen and touch panel without affecting your AC/climate controls. Slip in your Ipad Mini/Nexus 7 inplace of the old Screen and you're set to go.

A new Nexus 7 is $199.

Apple TV --> HDMI to RCA converter --> Doms Nav to Go -- Navi Screen. Way more than $199.

^^^ I totally agree with you...on the cost point of it...on the base TL (non navi), I had to keep the screen as it was integrated with the AC controls and was thinking the Navi would be the same way....

the only reason I was putting my thoughts is as the ipad would limit functionality and you cannot have a rear view camera/other video-in's....

either way, lets not shit on the OP's thread....I have derailed it enough....

I have no need for a camera, it would be nice, but I'm just adding more things instead of fixing my problem now. The Apple TV is more for a home entertainment piece, John uses that in and out of the car, I would like mine to be permanent, hence the iPad Mini install.

I want it for music, navi (I can use my iPhone as a wifi hotspot), and maybe notes or something

I was willing to fix my navi for $360 but at close to $500, I'd rather buy a $330 Mini.

OP, if you can take those few pics for me that would be amazing.

Not trying to cause a debate. I too was looking at using an Ipad Mini. I've always been sort of an Apple fan boy. The biggest reason why i want to integrate the tablet is for navigation since mine died. The reason why i chose to use a Nexus 7 instead is because Ipad Mini doesnt have true GPS. It uses "assisted GPS". Which means it uses cell towers, and wifi to get your location. This is not an issue if you get data service with your ipad and pay the monthly data plan.

I am too cheap to do that. The nexus 7 has a dedicated GPS and doesnt need data for GPS. I can provide a hot spot to my Nexus 7 with my iphone if i ever need data to look up stuff, but i didnt want to do that every time i get into the car just for GPS/Navigation.

I just wanted to share that information.

But if you use alot of Pandora/Internet Radio, i wouldnt like the idea of having to turn on my hotspot each and every time i hop into the car. So an ipad mini with data would be an excellent choice, and "GPS service" would not be an issue.

^^^ Ho9984,

with nexus and google, you can download the full map of city(ies) to your tablet....so you wont even need to provide a hotspot until you go "out" of the downloaded map

I have multiple maps saved to my phone, even though I have unlimited data, this way, if I loose network, navigation is still good

EDIT: I didnt know Ipad mini had AGPS...I thought it had the real deal...hmm

Yes that's what I meant. You can use google offline maps, or install Copilot and have full turn by turn without data with the nexus 7. But I still have the option of turning on my hotspot if I want to do Internet based stuff. For my situation, I just didn't want to turn on hotspot every time for navigation with an ipad mini. With

I think the big issue for me is there are considerably better automation tools on android to configure your device to behave exactly like you want. A copy of tasker can make your tablet do virtually anything in response to various states. (charging, off charge, bluetooth connected, wifi connected, etc) If you jailbreak on iOS there are some of these, but Android doesn't need root to do it and is more powerful.

One thing you could do on android is detect your phones bluetooth MAC address and when they are both there, and your open nav on the tablet it can automatically open the wifi hotspot on your phone and share it with the tablet, then close when nav is off. Tablets are going to need some tweaking for tight OEM like integration.

Or course if you're not a techie you'll never get to that level anyways.

FWIW most aGPS units *can* lock without a tower. Just the lock time can be a little long. I'd think having GLONASS would be a bigger deal, but I'm not sure if any tablets have it yet. A lot of the flagship phones in the last year and a half or so started getting it.

Yeah, I love googles offline maps. Google navigation is the best looking GUI out there. I just wish it was searchable for address and POIs andaybe turn by turn dorections when it's offline also. But having the map and seeing your location is doable and settle for CoPilot when you want turn by turn directions offline. I don't mind the larger download size google!!! I want my cake and eat it too google! Okay, i've totally thread jack this. Sorry OP. We want more updates!!
