AVElectronic and Archos 605 install finally done..

Just finished install of the AVElectronic unit and my Archos 605 Wifi. Overall I'm pretty pleased with how everything turned out.

For those not familiar with the AVElectronic unit there are a bunch of threads on here describing it, so I won't go into much detail. I will only say it is a pretty cool plug-n-play unit, and their customer support is second to none. It provides 4 A/V inputs (1 S-video) to your navigation screen, plus has a built in TV tuner.

Thus far, the only input on the AVElectronic I am using is for my Archos 605. This is a personal media player device with wifi for browsing the web. It is also a video/music/photo player. What's even better, is while sitting in my garage, I can use the wifi to copy movies, music, etc. wireless-ly from my home PC onto the device before I go on long road trips.

On to the install....Sorry for the blurry pics.

Thanks to all the great threads on this site, taking the car apart for the install was a breeze. During the install, I had my laptop open to the pertinent threads I needed.

Here is all the parts I installed, I needed buy the DVR station for the Archos in order to control it via remote and allow me to install it out of site. The smallest part in the lower right is an IR extender, I used it to extend the IR from the front of the car to where the Archos is installed.

Here is a bad pic of the wires I ran to the lower center console to connect into the Archos. S-video, A/V cable, and aux. cable from the aux input in the center console. I ran switched power for the the AVElectronic unit using the empty fuse slot #29, and a add-a-fuse circuit that I got at autozone.

Here is the top menu of the Archos unit, this thing does a lot. The best features are video, music, and web browser.

Here is a close up of the remote for the Archos, the full keypad is nice for typing in web addresses.

Here is a shot of the Archos GUI, when playing music.

Here is me, browsing some websites...

Finally, a shot of the TV tuner, pretty decent reception, even though by the end of this year, there will be no more analog TV

About the only thing that is somewhat disappointing is the picture quality of the Archos. Using the S-video input on the AVElectronic, I guess I was expecting it to be much clearer. But overall I'm happy with the install, the picture quality is good enough for me to check my email on the road at least, and is very good for movies and TV.

Great install!!! Interested in doing a similar setup how has the archos held up so far? How are you connecting to the web? Via a router installed in the car or just pulling wifi from whatever area you are in? Also any pics of where you installed the IR extender? Don't think I understand what it is connected to

I really like the Archos, it is a bit buggy sometimes (won't play videos, etc.) but recent firmware updates have resolved this. I have a bunch of DVD's/TV shows and still have room for 20+ gigs of music. Picture quality on the NAV screen is decent.

I connect to the web wherever there is access to a wi-fi hotspot. I actually do not use the web to often, rather I use the wi-fi connection to download music/movies from my home PC to the unit while parked in my garage (before a road trip).

The IR extender has a small brain unit that I hid under the center console panels. The brain needs power and ground.
It also has two wires; one to receive the IR signal from the remote, and the other to transmit the signal to the device you want to control. From the brain I ran the transmitter into the center console storage to control the Archos docking station. The reciever (the eye for the IR), I placed in the lower storage bin under the NAV, so it is in a visible line of site of the remote when the storage bin is open.

Any other questions, just let me know.

Everything is controlled by the keyboard? I'm assuming the touch screen cannot be used to control the menu.

Correct, when the unit outputs video to an external screen, the touch screen is disabled. Thus you need the remote to control any functions when outputting to the NAVI screen.

Thanks for the reply. Didn't think I was gonna get a response since this is a pretty old thread. You connected the archos via the avelectronic unit with s video. I have Dom's PNP. Will the Archos connect with a regular audio/video cable or S-video only. I ask because Dom's doesn't have S-video input. How did you get power to the DVR station?

Yes, the Archos DVR station has composite video outputs.

In addition to the Archos 605, what else did you order from their site accessory wise to make it work? What size hard drive is in your 605? Thanks.

You will need the DVR station, as it is the only way you can output the Archos video to an external screen. The DVR station requires AC power adapter, thus I also had to buy a power inverter. I have the 80gb hard drive.

I just had the worse possible forum site up experience ever on this site. I'll email admins. Every username I tried didn't work and there's nothing on the page to say what the rules are. Then as a anonymous user I could see VTEChump's page but as a registered user I can't? What's up with that?

Anyway I'm trying to send VTEChump a private message.... but I can't so hopefully you're still reading this...

I'm having a problem with my AVElectronics install, the reverse camera works but nothing else works. I plug in an xbox yellow RCA Out into the Rerverse Camera and I see the signal. I plug it into AV2 and nothing. I can't switch with the remote. Wondering if you had any thoughts. I'm using the Multi-Switch box. I have a post of my problem here, maybe you can take a look and give me your thoughts.

Thanks.

New members are not allowed to PM members until certain critera is met. You should have seen this in the registration email that you received. Check the batteries in the remote and make sure that the IR sensor for the AV unit is hooked up properly. It sounds like the source isn't changing.

Well the weird thing was as anonymous I could at least see his public profile, but as a registered new user I couldn't.

Ok change battery? Well the remote works currently, if I plug the Reverse Camera into Left or Right Camera and hit Set or Enter on the remote it switches, and I see the video. So I think the battery would be ok.

Where is the IR Sensor for the device? The Remote is Radio Frequency or something. There is one cable coming out, which it says is for the Remote signal, other then that don't see anything.

Really old thread, but I just saw this post. Anyways, I'm sure you have figured out by now, but you probably forgot to ground the parking brake wire on the AVelectronic unit. This is to get around having the parking brake on when watching one of the AV inputs.
