FM radio works the same way that AM radio works. The difference is in how the carrier wave is modulated, or altered. With AM radio, the amplitude, or overall strength, of the signal is varied to incorporate the sound information. With FM, the frequency (the number of times each second that the current changes direction) of the carrier signal is varied.
FM signals have a great advantage over AM signals. Both signals are susceptible to slight changes in amplitude. With an AM broadcast, these changes result in static. With an FM broadcast, slight changes in amplitude don't matter -- since the audio signal is conveyed through changes in frequency, the FM receiver can just ignore changes in amplitude. The result: no static at all.

If you're not on a small budget, go with FlashPro, you won't be disappointed in its abilities or the ease of install. The only semi difficult part is getting a new ECU flashed to your VIN if you have an 06-04 TL. Some dealers will do it no question, some are sticklers, however Halferland offers a computer for rent to do this yourself if you end up in the latter situation, after that it's drop in a harness and press play.
If you're on a tight budget and going boost or just want more fuel/ a nitrous window switch with limited other capabilites, the AEM FIC6 piggyback unit is about half the cost with harness. It can't do a ton of timing changes (no advance, critical for high HP or N/A builds) and has to correct around the ECU which will still be constantly trying to retune your car (to a minimal degree if you're good with the FIC, but a few degrees of timing under boost is a big change).
