Tranny fluid 3x3

Ok well I’ve been reading and searching on more on google cause the threads on here pop up easier lol..anyway…So we’re gonna do my fluid change 3x3 and one post said not to drive it just go through them for 30 seconds/drive on the freeway 15mins/drive slow going through all the gears then come back drain and fill…etc. does anyone have a more solid answer or proper way to do this? Or is it all gonna do the same? Thanks Y’all in advance…I’m trying to keep 🃏 going strong lol…also this is the fluid I think prior owner kept it up to? What y’all think?

Fluid looks fairly clean from what I can see.

some people may say that doing a 3x3 without actually driving is just wasting perfectly good fluid, and that you should maybe do a 1x3 every oil change, while others may disagree.

you're going to get a mix of opinions, but there's no true correct way.

that I assumed I’d get 😆…I kinda feel the same bout not driving cause the parts aren’t completely moving IMO. I was thinking on driving on a Main Street manually up shift and down shift the gears and come back and repeat. Just wanted to know if there was a solid way to be done lol…

As long as the fluid isn't awful, I tend to stick with 1x3s every so often, to keep refreshing the fluid and still feel like I'm getting good life out of it too.

If you want to do a 3x3, I'd think a 15 minute drive with both city and highway to get the fluid all mixed and the torque converter locked up would be ideal.

Simply put, your automatic transmission holds a total of something like 7-8 quarts of fluid. BUT whenever you pull the drain plug, only about 3 quarts drains. That's because there is still fluid residing in the torque converter and elsewhere in the trans. Since you can only drain and fill 3 quarts at a time, it is recommended that you drive the car a bit to mix the existing fluid with the new each time you drain and fill. This is why people to tell you to go through all the gears. If you do the drain and fill 3 times (total of 9 quarts of fluid), you are essentially replacing 99.99% of the fluid with new fluid.

If you do not drive the car in between changes, you might just start draining out the new fluid, while the used fluid is still stuck in the torque converter.

just jack the car up. Drain the fluid and put 31/2 almost 4 quarts back in it and done. Make sure you use honda fluid or equivalent. I have been in the trans business for over 20 years. Its not a big deal.

ok and with the color of my fluid my boys shop said 1x3 if fine since it’s still good. I was going to drop the car off tomm or Friday. Now I have extra fluid would driving it for a weekend and changing it again matter? Or should I just hold on to the fluid for later? I just do t want to mess anything up lol. Just wanna stay up to date. My cousin said when he go to Honda they just drain and fill his pilot and he at almost 200k

so you think just doing doing the one drain and fill should be fine? I was also looking for the external filter think I should change it as well as I’m doing a fluid change. Only thing that sucks is I had gotten 10qrts 😆 before asking more questions.

You don't list which year and mileage. But looking at you picture, it looks like 07-08, so no external filter. only the 04-06 had external filters.

if you do it regularly, then a 1x3 would be sufficient.

Oh very true sorry about that. She’s a 2007 type-s and at 103,867 miles.
as far as regularly not sure that why I posted the pic I got her about 2 months ago. They did the timing pump and tensioner before I got her but nothing about the fluid

I did it both ways with my 07.

Sometimes I would just do when I did the oil change (1x about every 6000 miles for 3 cycles), and sometimes after a few hundred miles (3x and then lets it go for 30k - 40k btw changes).

My transmission was at 305,000 when I sold the car and it was in great shape. I think the key is to keep it clean. Keep and eye on it and when it starts to change from red or you get to 30k or 40k, do it again. With the dipstick the job is super easy.

The 07 were much improved from earlier years, so take care of it and it will run forever. Enjoy!

305k miles!!! 😯 yea the shop said just to do one drain and fill cause it wasn’t dark. My other boy said just do the 3x3 I know everyone has the way but I got the fluid and I don’t drive my car hard I do highway and then weekends I do some deliveries for a few hours. When u say a few hundred miles u mean u did the 3x3 and let it ride for the 30k miles?

yes.....do a change, drive around for a few days, do another, repeat again and you are good for a while. I used to put on about 30k/year, so I just got used to doing it with oil changes and keeping an eye on color.

yes if you don't drive that much between changes 1 drain is fine. If there is a filter absolutely change it.

every other service you do take it to a professional shop so they can completely remove all the old fluid and replace it with the 8 quarts of new.

I did oil about every 5k - 7.5k but used conventional oil (Pennzoil). Most of my miles were highway cruising at 75 mph. The computer usually indicated about 10% - 20% remaining. Same deal with oil and ATF. Change often when you get miles or color changes. Take care of your TL and it will last a long time. Oil and free labor is cheap.

Yup, yup, yup---good comments from everyone, just a couple more from me...

Unless I know for sure the history, I do a 3X3 along with the usual once-over-new-to-me cars. You'll change out about 90% of the ATF (IIRC, 'shoez did the math once and the number 86% comes to mind) with a 3X3. Since it takes a few minutes for the ATF to circulate, my method is to do a 1X3, drive around the block (my block is 3 minutes to the x-way, a 7-mile run and 6-7 minutes back home) going thru all the gears including reverse and park, and repeat after each fill. I go with ~3.2 qts on the third change--check your dipstick. Then I do a 1X3 every other oil change. So, yup, everybody DOES do it differently.

My 07 TL-S has 237K and shifts perfectly. Take care of your trans and it'll take care of you.

i mean to do drive I do deliveries on the weekend and back and forth on the highway bout 60miles 2 sometimes 3 times a week. So I guess anywhere from 12 to 16k estimated of course. I was kinda feeling what quantom had said I’m doing the 3x1 tomm then on the next lol change again and one more time. Since my fluid still got color and just stay on top of it make sure it doesn’t go too long and such.

I really appreciate everyone’s input. This is my first Honda/Acura so trying to soak in as much as possible and seeing old threads helps but having fresh input is more helpful IMO. Gonna be keeping her for awhile so want to avoid as many issues as possible.
