please specify what paint you used, the prep process, and how the paint has held up.
I'm thinking Im going to lightly sand, clean thuroughly, adhesion promoter, paint with trim paint, and add a clear to protect. Hopefully this does no chip.

Obviously you want the best mechanical and chemical adhesion possible. Prep using the coarsest grit sand paper that will not show sand scratches. I used 500 grit on mine. The benefit of using a body shop or professional automotive paint is that the cured finish durability, to UV rays, chemicals and abrasions, is superior than spray paint.
But, any part on the front end of a car is going to get hit my rocks and debris. The painted grille can chip just like the painted bumper/hood/fenders. Even your stock grille and headlights will get pits from rocks, debris, ect, over time. As long as you can touch up the paint if you do get a chip, you'll be fine.
