Replace window swipes instead of using moleskin?

My car is at the dealer for some work and they put me in a 09 tsx. While I was sitting at light I was looking at the window swipe and noticed that the inner fins have the factory "felt" embedded in them, unlike our swipes.

This got me wondering if there was a way to use the tsx, or another vehicle's, swipes on our cars. I don't expect a direct fit, but if it's just a matter of trimming length or the cuts at the ends, this might be a good fix for tint scratching and moleskin glue streaking.

I'd have to do some searching to see how the swipe mounts compare between vehicles. Just wanted to see if anybody has looked into actually replacing the swipes instead of just trying to attach something to the stock swipes.

Mods - I don't recall seeing this before but if this has been discussed, please delete the thread. No need for more clutter.

I haven't looked into this yet but I'm going to try when I get some time. I'm sure there are people around here with the knowledge, or access to info, that may be able to help.

Problem is, I don't know which vehicles/years come with the weatherstripping with the felt and which do not. It may come down to just buying one to be able to check the fitment.

I owned an 04 TSX and I didn't notice any felt there, so it may be new with the 09 TSX.

Trying to do a little research between projects here at work but it's looking like I'll need to either just order the 09 tsx weatherstrip to take a look at it or try the parts dept. at the dealer near me. Unfortuntately, they don't usually have these kinds of parts in stock so that may not work. Would be nice to see the TL and TSX pieces side by side to get an idea if this will work.

Just got a 2in wide glue smear on my driver side window where the lower piece of felt folded over near the front end. I've only ever had problems with that one window and I've redone it twice already.

OMG, now they put the felt on! haha, just our luck huh guys? haha... Do you think the 09TL's have the felt on the weather strips? I'm wondering cuz maybe that might be a better fit since its a TL? I know the car is completely different but maybe?? Man, I get smears and scratches still even with the moleskin. haha, I'M TIRED OF IT, but I gotta have tint...

PEACE!

This would be great if we could find one with the felt already on it. I get glue marks everytime its warm outside. I have taken them all out and checked to make sure the moleskin is on right, and they all look fine. I hate having to clean my windows once a week just to get rid of glue marks!! Anyone else have major problems with glue?

anymore word on this? im getting glue on my tint also

Ive located the inner weather stripping and will cost about 100 bucks with tax for all 4 from the dealer. Could someone measure the 09 tsx front and rear doors where the stripping runs so we can compare to the tl... if tsx longer all you have to do is trim.

Unfortunately, I haven't had time to look into this any more. My biggest concern with this idea is if the channel (part that connects it to the door) in the weatherstrip is the same between models. Problem is that you can't check this if buying the parts online. I was planning to see if the dealer has these in stock, for both the 09 tsx and for our cars, to be able to compare them side by side. Just not sure if this is a part they normally have in stock and my dealer's parts dept. isn't all that great.

The length, as mentioned, is not that big of a deal (assuming the tsx is longer) since trimming it shouldn't be a problem.

I also don't know if other 09 models have the felt stock. I've only been able to look at a tsx.

Btw, these go for ~$16ea online for the fronts.

07-08 Tls have this felt as well.. but that is only at the very top of the window jam. The weather strip below will still accumulate dirt and cause scratches.

How many would you need? One or two for each door? I assuming one since tint in only on the inside.

07-08's do not have the felt.....well, not on the inner weatherstrip which is the one that needs it.

You would only need one per door, the inner panel.

took a look at my 08, it actually has felt on the outside, which does us no good for the tint. Look at both the 09 TL and 09 TSX, and the have felt inside and out. Asked the parts department about getting those felt pieces, and got a blank stare and confused look... maybe someone else will have better luck.

on the plus side... when i showed the service department... i got a free can of offical Acura glass cleaner. lol

This is weird. I've never installed moleskins on ANY of my cars. I had never even heard of them before coming to Acurazine a few years ago. I've owned 4 (currently 3) vehicles with quality metallic tint and I've never had a problem with scratches on any of them. The same installer tinted at least 12 of my close friends and families vehicles with the same tint and none of them have scratches after as many as 9 years!!!

05 TL, not a scratch (tinted since 07)
03 Element, not a scratch (tinted from new)
89 CRX, not a scratch (tinted since 07)

What sort of crappy tint are you guys using?

My 05 TL was tinted at 20k miles. It now has over 40k and still no scratches anywhere. I roll the windows up and down all the time. I never ever clean down into the existing OEM felt liners. I drive with the windows down here in dusty Las Vegas whenever it's not 90+ degrees out. I don't understand what everyone on this board is doing wrong.

I haven't had a chance to follow through with this due to other projects/fixes on the car. I think all it would take is a trip to the parts dept. and seeing both pieces (TL vs. 09 TSX or other) side by side. Unfortunately, the parts dept. at the dealer near me is somewhat useless which is another reason I haven't stopped in to see for myself.

Only good thing is that my moleskin finally stopped streaking so it's not as big of a deal right now. But, as has been mentioned before, moleskin can actually hold grit due to the knap (sp?) it has (like the soft side of velcro). The "stock felt" is a little different and would be a better option assuming it fits.

There has to be someone here that has easy access to parts that can verify, right?

This is a good question. I hope to tint my '05 TL in the next week or two. Will I get scratches for sure if I don't do moleskins? Is there a tint that is more resistant to scratching? Thanks!

I would say most of those that did NOT use moleskin have scratches in their tint.

Just ask your tinter to clean the OEM felt before they install. My tinter always does this beforehand with a little flat brush and some water w/ dish soap in it. Then he wipes it out w/ a little t-shirt style piece of rag.

I called a local tint shop that I have used and liked and they said they install a piece of felt for $10 a window. Called the dealership and that is what they suggested having done.

Just by looking at the two parts diagrams, I'd say that they are completly different. However, if the felt part is removable from the TSX piece, it may be possible to transplant. Without the actual pieces side by side it's impossible to say.

'05 TL

'09 TSX

I just ordered a few parts and ordered one of the front '09 TSX window swipes. It should be here by the end of next week. Will check back once I receive.

Well I picked up my parts today along with the '09 TSX window swipe. It does have the felt but is a totaly different design and cannot be modified to fit out TLs. Looks like the moleskin will have to do.
