Quick question regarding usage of 5AT

Can anything bad happen to the tranny if I change from neutral to drive when the car is moving? How about changing from reverse to drive when the car is still rolling backwards?

How is this bad? The gears in the tranny are still moving in neutral, and when you go into drive there's no noticable jerk. Please elaborate.

Depends how well you match the speed, if you throw it into drive while rolling at high speed you will probably just slow down REALLY fast. As far as from reverse to drive that stresses the engine and tranny. I would not view either to be lethal though it may reduce the life. On mythbusters they repetativly through a car going 60 into reverse, tranny lasted.

couple month ago I did that N - > D by accident while going down a hill. I was parked on downhill and I thoguth I was in D when I pulled out, but in fact I was in N. I was about 20MPH and when I switched to D, I heard gears minorly rubbing.

from D - R or N - R I believe new TL won't do that as long as you are over certain speed. 10MPH?

Well I'm used to poping into neutral at a redlight but you know how somtimes the light change before you roll to a stop and there's people behind you, so you gota get moving asap...

The transmission isn't stupid - it will compensate. You can be rolling at 60 in neutral, pop it in drive and it will NOT jerk or slow you down, it will just go immediately to the appropriate gear. It's not bad for your transmission.

The shifting to D while still rolling backwards, however, stresses the whole drivetrain.

doing this in neutral as its not so good for the tranny its WORSE to do this in reverse...if your rolling back and then u pop it into drive it is TERRIBLE for hte tranny and as CoupeV6 said...it stresses the whole drivetrain
