I have to ask, but what did he do to make it go so quick?
From what I understand it should, but if the engine is done is the transmission messed up as well?

In some states it wouldnt be legal to install a motor that is older than the vehicle model year but if you were gonna do the swap anyway, I would retain the original ECU and install the original sensors since you have no idea if the sensors in the replacement motor are any good.

From what I can see from the used parts guide, the 2004-2006 same, and the 2007-2008 same.

Looking at the part numbers, the '06 differs from the '07, just to name a few:
Rear cylinder head, but the front is the same.
Engine assembly
Engine control module
Cylinder block assembly
Engine wiring harness

Do these differences indicate that the '06 engine won't be fine as a replacement, I certainly can't answer that, but I would stay with the '07/'08 to be sure.

Maybe some with more knowledge with be able to answer this.

Engine Replacement would have been a better choice of words. Clicking into the thread, my expectations weren't too high when I noticed that the post count hadn't made it over 200 in less that one hour..HA

Regurgitating what other members have said, stick to the '07-08' engine

07 has a revised AT so I wouldn't bank on it, 08 will definitely work as well.. The question your friend needs to ask is if he really needs an engine replacement?? Most places prefer to R&R because it's easier on them.. not you. Give us more specifics.. like is it a seized piston/s, bent valves, etc..

^ Correct

2007+ TL & TL-S have the grade-logic transmission

If an engine replacement is "needed" ... go for a 3.5L Frankenstein build... or atleast a J35A8 swap

I would think 04-06 would bolt on just fine. But Ecu and sensors would definitely need to be original. A six speed install would be sick too.

uhm TL has had the grade logic for quite some time even before the 5spd at was introduced. Honda has been using it since at least '94 as my old 94 accord had grade logic
