Question about throttle response.
I just broke my car in the other day and I was driving on the highway - As soon as I hit 1000km, I stepped on the gas about half way. The car unexpectedly revved a LOT more than I anticipated... I went from 2k rpm to 5.5k rpm as if I floored it...
My question is .... is this a feature of "drive by wire"???? I'm not so sure if I like that too much - it feels so artificial...

I am assuming you have an automatic transmission.. right?
If so, you forced the transmission to downshift probably a few gears. Try tipping into the throttle smoothly and see what you think.

Safety Car
You DON'T like it ??? Heck, this is the thing I like most.
It is just the way the car is designed... to haul ass when prompted !!!
It is not DBW. I have a new 06 and a 02 TL. The 02 TL is cable operated. The transmission in the 02 is even slightly more "downshift happy" than my 06.
I have experimented with the downshift patterns in my 06. It does not matter if I quickly slam the pedal to the floor, or just slowly press into the throttle. It downshifts the same. It is just a function of how far the pedal is depressed versus the MPH. If you become eligible for a downshift based on throttle position and MPH, you will get a downshift.
Just hold on tight to the steering wheel, and look for openings in the traffic... you will be fine (just joking).
Seriously, just learn how far you can press the pedal before inducing a downshift, and learn to avoid pressing too far into the pedal to cause a downshift. You will get a hang of it after driving your TL for a while.

DRINKING HAS A ME PROBLEM
if you dont want down shifts throw it in SS. it will keep it from doing that. just gotta remember to either take it out of SS when you slow down or shift back up.

Thanks for the help guys. I drive a 5AT, so no clutch for me to mess up (thank god).
I guess it was a downshift - I was very unprepared for all the power to come out since I was already going about 120km/h. I guess there's still a lot to me to learn about this car!
