Proactive Starter Replacement - Yea or No?
Ya the tl's starter is in an easy enough location to get to when it does fail and if it does while you are away from home or a shop just take a metal bar (check in your spare wheel area for one) and bang it against the starter and it will startup.
I replaced mine twice (one rebuilt starter failed within 30 days), it takes all of 30 minutes to do.

No, but I may go ahead and order this:

+1 on that. Unless you're having starter issues, which are more often shown over a long period of time before they don't work at all, don't touch it.
And +1 on that. I usually rebuild starters instead of replacing them because 99% of the time it's the brushes that need changing. Same for smaller motors FYI.

My starter recently went out. Pain in the ass just because I have a 6MT and apparently the 6MT and 5AT are different. Not sure what is different but the dealer and Rock Auto both have different part numbers. I hate dealing with Rock Auto with thisngs that have core charges because I never end up sending the core back so I started going to the local auto parts store. Two of the stores told me that my car didn't come with a manual transmission. Two of the stores said they showed no difference between the 6MT and 5AT. One of the stores said that they could get the 6MT one for $300+. I decided to just get it rebuilt for $80 at Browning's here in Virginia Beach. The original style solenoid id no longer available so they made a nice custom jumper that allowed the factory wire to be plugged right in and maintain the weather tight connection.
So.....if you have a 5MT I wouldn't worry about it. You can hit the starter with one of your spare tire tools and get a few more starts out of it when the time comes. If you have a 6MT you can always do the same thing or even push start it. Park on a hill.

Thanks for the input, guys. I've spent the past few weeks trying to refurb my TL to "new" driving conditions with a "boil the ocean" approach thus far, but looks like I can skip this one. I'll update with a thread in a few weeks on the final results.

My 04 5at was going out at around 125k miles. It failed a couple times before I replaced it within a span of about 6 months.
My 6mt went out at around 125k miles also, but wasn't drive able without smacking the starter with a hammer. I had trouble finding it even at the dealer, but finally found one after calling 3-4 of them. It cost me 250$ with price matching from one of the online dealers.
