Ouch, my ears! Headliner resonance?

Driving around 60 to 70 mph, I lowered the two rear windows.

It felt like I was inside of a bass drum being played by a hopped up coke head.
I think it's the headliner vibrating.

Has anyone else experiencee this?

It's called wah"sp?" definitely not spelled right.

try cracking the front windows also, it should go away. It's the air not your headliner and has to do with aerodynamics and the air. :smackhead

This was mentioned before and I don't think it is the headliner, but just the air itself going through the car. I tried it when I first read about it, and the sound is horrendous. Then, the other day, I didn't realize I didn't get one back window completely closed, and when I got the speed ovr 50 something, this terrible noise scared the hell out of me. I thought the car had broken until I checked the back windows and closed the one that was open.

All this means that it is a common occurrence when the back windows are the only ones opened, so either open a front windown, open the sunroof, or keep the back windows closed.

Every few weeks a thread gets started on this topic.

Am I the only person on this forum who has driven other four-door cars and put down only the back windows and felt this annoying, almost catastrophic-sounding phenomenon?

People, this is not unique to the TL. Not all cars have it but many do. I had a late-80s Tercel that had it. I had a mid-90s Altima that had it. I've been in BMWs and Mercedes' owned by friends and family that have it. I've been in SUVs that have it.

As dougpt10 and Ron A pointed out, this is a phenomenon of aerodynamics. Is it serious enough that it could break something? Hell, I don't know. It's annoying enough that I never want to find out.

Just don't do it. Don't roll down only the back windows.

every car i've ever owned has done this as well...

open the front windows a bit...or pop up the sunroof...

i actually like having the sunroof poped up, and the two rear windows opened maybe 3 or 4 inches...gives a nice swirling effect of air through the car

I've never had a car that did this before. Sometimes I like driving with the rear windows down a bit for non-direct air. I guess that this won't happen with the TL. The sound level is amazingly loud, and at about 10 Hz. Better than ANY subwoofer!

I think it is like blowing over the top if a bottle, and dependent on the shape of the car.

My '99 maxima was unbearable when only the rear windows were down. It's probably that way on all sedans to some degree; all that air rushing in with no place to go.

The TL is loud and annoying, but not nearly as bad as my Maxima was.
