The "OK" Button Is The Devil!
The "OK" Button Is The Devil!
I can't take it anymore. Every time I start up the car, it haunts me. I can't just put on the seat belt and go. No. I have to strategize. Have to come up with the appropriate time in the departure sequence to glance at the nav screen and hit the button. One time, I didn't pay attention and the screen went black. Black! I had to pull off the road to consider options. I shut off the engine and did it the right way. Whew. That was close. One other time, I started driving and realized that I'd never actually seen the precise moment that the button materialized. I'd glance and it wasn't there. Then I'd glance back and it was there. Maybe it was me? Could the nav sense that I looked back and forth like one of those soap dispensers at better truck stops? I tried blowing on it. That didn't do it. A spitball? Nope.

I had issues with the "go" sequence at first myself. Then I found out that all I had to do when the screen went blank was to hit the joystick button twice and everthing was back to normal. Now I don't do any sequencing, just drive - much more fun - cause the NAVI is just two punches away.
Joystick button TWICE? My God man! You're wasting precious finger muscle energy! Just press the MAP or MENU button ONCE! Or press the voice command switch ONCE!

My son has one of those rubber-tipped suction dart guns so I've got an idea:
I think I can mod a headrest to launch a single spring-loaded dart at the nav screen to simulate the 'touch' of the OK button. There's got to be a way to gut a cellphone and use it's Bluetooth receiver as a detonator. If I can get to the protocol chip on the HFL's circuit board, I should be able to program a precise 'delay' to the pairing process so that the moment the OK button appears the HFL attempts to pair to the detonator and that'll launch the dart which will hit the OK button.
Anyone know XML? Anyone have a camel-colored rubber tipped suction dart? I'm going to need some help with this one.

TLGator, tried it. didn't work for me. When I hit the map button after the screen when black, the legal screen came up again. When I tried voice commands, same thing. The reason I hit the joystick twice is to 1) acknowledge the legal screen, and 2) to get the map screen. By ignoring the NAVI for a minute or so, no "timing" or sequencing is needed. Just a quick "punch punch" on the joystick.

I don't always use the map on the NAVI so when I drive and the screen goes black and I want to see the audio selection (title and singer for XM for example, I just hit the Audio button and the audio screen comes up) The disclaimer is just for the NAVI (map) and you need to enter a destination while stopped anyway or before you move so just use the map when you need to.
I find that on my daily commute, I don't need the map functions so I just ignore it... sometimes I leave it black when I'm listening to FM and the station is displayed on the top of the dash where the clock and temp are.
Why use the energy when you don't need to. The double joystick punch is good to know about though. You learn something new everyday...

Ah, thanks for the info. I did notice it took a while to boot up. When I test drove the car I was sitting in the spot waiting for the OK button, and thought it was turned off for the demo model :p
Came up eventually though. Now I know what you are talking about.

Energy?

No need to worry about the OK button if you're just driving to the store or to work. I'm sure you know the way...
I agree with ramilford that there's no savings on the car's energy by leaving the navi screen off but there's much to be saved in stressing about the OK button when you don't need to.
What about the lifespan of the screen itself? Does anyone know if these things wear out? This is probably a stupid question, but I know very little about LCDs. Also, what about the touchscreen aspect? Can that wear out? Thanks in advance.
