max speed?

I saw a thread a while back that talked about the TL's max speed was drag limited, at 150something....

R&T says it's electronically limited at 147, is it possible the 2004's were not electronically limited and the 2005s are??

also, in this article, R&T's "winner" is the TL! YAY!!

You got a nice, big, high-banked oval in your backyard or what?

hehe.... no... and i probably would never even try to get it close to that fast...

I have driven about 145 one time in a 2000 TL, and once again about 145 in my 92 Maxima SE (yes, the speedo was pretty accurate, i checked the math of the RPMs and tire size (and ratios of course).

My new TL I have not had over 65mph yet (just got it 12 days ago).

How did you get up to that speed in the Maxima Se?. I saw the speedometer face of the Maxima 92 ( 0- 125 MPH) on the other day.
P.S: I had 96 Maxima SE with H rated tire 130 MPH (Factory tires)

the stock cluster will not go past 155, and most of the time the cluster are off when they get over 100

Guess I'm a slow poke then. I've only had mine to 80 a couple of times on Interstate. Only did that to pass someone.

I remember some magazine got 1995 manual Se to 142 mph. Real, not spedometer indicated.

They are crap, but for reasons unrelated to the "W" speed rating. Do a search.

100 here - this car feels too good at 100, I know it would not be too difficult to go 120+

80?! I do that on my commute home every day ....

I've had it to about 105 +- very smooth .. completely surprised me that I got up there that quick. I floored it to pass going up hill, looked down and was like "Ohhh Sh!t" (big time speed trap less than 1 mile up the road) :cop:

Nice article in R&T .. thanks for the post!

i assure you my maxima has higher than 125mph speedo, its something like 150 or 160 if i remember correctly... you may have seen a "non SE" model, the SEs were white faced. Also, as a side note, the 92-94 SEs had a different motor than ANY other nissan has ever had... makes it a PITA to find parts at the local auto parts stores, some of them even have the wrong engine listed for the SE, they have the non-SE engine listed. That model Maxima (92-94 SE) was a rare breed It's quite funny to race cars like an integra GSR, Eclipse, etc (it will beat a stock eclipse GST).... they are quite surprised to be beaten by a 13yrold sedan

I havent seen anyone give a difinitive answer about the TL's top speed.... someone said one time they saw a test of it and they reported it was drag limited, and I'm almost certain they said it was over 150+. nobody remembers?

rbf351... which cluster, the maxima's? maybe that is right... I'll have to look today.

ELs are V rated from what I know about them and are good to 149 sustained speed.

If you want to see how good they are... look here http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ID=C13674x017&

they do not do anything well. BTW if you plan to try to speed better do that during the first 5000 miles since wear on a tire impacts performance

I think 4th gen and newer Maximas has speedos that go up to 160. The engine was the same in the GXE, SE, and GLE for the 4th gen and 5th gen. There was plans to give the 220hp for the SE only in the 5th gen.

I've had my '05 6MT up to 130MPH+ momentarily a couple times. I was wondering when the limiter (assuming there is one) would kick in.

I've been up to 145+ on the way back from vegas! The car felt like it could easily handle more, but i felt wrong to be going so damn fast.

If I had made it all the way to 145 I would have pushed it all the way. Especially on one of those desert roads where you can see straight for around 100 miles

I have personally driven it to an indicated 150mph with the EL 42's. To drive that fast they have to be pumped up to 39psi fr/35 psi rear. Even at those pressures they are not happy at more than 130 they develop a very scary low pitch growl (Igot off the gas real quick). I strongly discourage doing it with the EL 42. I have switched to Michelin PS2' but have only had the opportunity to take them to 140. The Michelins feel fantastic at high speeds with amazing directional stabilty. The hotter they get the better they feel.

Well if tires are rated to X MPH, and they blow out before the indicated time, isnt there a lawsuit, that is if you survive one or multiple blowouts at 150?

The 2004 TL EL42 are W rated to 168mph. Car & Driver (March 2004) got a measured 152mph from a stock TL. Car & Driver lists the car as drag limited, but the electronic throttle may be programmed for a soft limit, making it hard to discern.

If you read the manual, the EL are supposed to be driven up to 130 at regular pressure. To be frank the ELS are a POS, they might be fine for my Odyssey but they are simply a disgrace for the TL. I strongly encourage all TL owners to get much higher performance rubber when they wear out if not sooner. They will simply be amazed at the additional performance they can wring out of the car by fitting it with good tires. I can personaly vouch for the PS2's, they are simply fantastic. There are also some excellent high performance tires to consider from yokohama, pirelli and other manufacturers.
