Look what I hit...

150,000 miles.

I know it's not huge as others have done it, but wth! I hit the mark this past Saturday.

It's an '04 TL (AT) that I bought new on October 25, 2003. I'm the only owner and it's pretty much bone stock except a moonroof wind deflector the dealer gave me for free when I first bought the car and said it was kind of noisy when I opened it.

Hit it as I was passing Buffalo (Texas, that is) on the way to Houston :

I ended the return trip with 31 MPG, but at this point was hitting 30 MPG. I used to get 32-33 MPG on the MID. Still not sure if changing tires will get me back to that since the mileage seemed to drop when I switched to my current set or if this is a drop in mileage caused by "old age".

MAJOR ISSUES SO FAR
  • 15-30,000 miles - replaced defective brake pads free under warranty
  • 80,000 miles - power steering pump replaced under warranty
  • 122,000 miles - two engine mounts replaced (seems to be a common problem)
  • 120-130,000 miles - SRS light stayed on. Fixed free under lifetime (?) warranty by dealer.

MINOR ISSUES THAT I HAVEN'T BOTHERED FIXING
  • I call this the U2 - Rattle & Hum edition of the TL. I've gotten used to the rattles and buzzes that originally drove me nuts.
  • Driver's sideview mirror goes ape sometimes when I reverse and have it set to point down using the mirror switch.
  • Passenger window sometimes bounces back up for no reason when I try to bring it down
  • One of the seat heater lights as well the cruise control switch light are out.
  • Paint flaking off one of the AC vents (you can see it in the pic above)
  • Dent/depression on the door where I rest my elbow up against the window when I drive. (That's just cheap quality, if you ask me!)
  • Have had squeaky/squealing brakes for the last 120-130,000 miles. Nobody seems to be able to fix it including the dealer.

I've changed out the brake pads originally on the defect mentioned above, but have only changed out the front pads once since then at around 130,000+ miles. They probably could've gone another 10,000 miles. Rear pads are still the originals (unless they changed them out when they changed out the fronts on the defect).

The suspension parts are still the original parts that came with the car.
The transmission is still the original transmission.
I've used synthetic (Mobil 5w-20) or syn-blend (Motorcraft 5w-20) oil on all oil changes except one where the dealership changed the oil after I told them not to and put Valvoline in, I believe.
Transmission fluid changes have been all Honda's fluid (dealership did these).

This partially answers this 2 year old thread's question :

https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/what-odds-2005-tl-being-future-great-150000-miles-cars-631220/

I don't know when I'll get rid of her. I'll probably keep her until she starts giving me major problems.

Great to hear your transmission made it that far, alot of people would be on their 2nd or 3rd
I hope to get to 150K with no major issues.

I dont see any dash cracks on your TL. Did you have yours replaced or were you lucky enough to escape it.

I cant say ive had as good of luck with my car. here is a list of current problems with mine
-Headliner just started sagging in some parts [found out 2 days ago]
-rear view mirror is broken [found out 2 days ago]
-temp control lights on passenger side dont work (buttons work)
-Volume and Channel lights on steering wheel don't work
-Passenger Heat seat icon light doesn't light up (orange light works)
-Broken Motor mounts
-Seized Eccentric bolt (to change the toe) [found out yesterday]
-Navigation occasionally gives me an error when i turn on the car on cold mornings (Disc Read Error I think)
-Menu button, Setup button, and cancel buttons on the navi occasionally get stubborn. They wont work for a minute, but then they work fine. its a pretty rare occurrence, but its become more frequency
-My front passenger window occasionally bounces back down when trying to put it up
-Driver side mirror occasionally tweaks out when I put it in reverse [When it lowers the mirror]
-A million rattles
-Cup holder slider cover broken
-Cruse Control button doesn't stay clicked in (Cruse control will work if I hold the button in, but my hand cramps pretty quick if I try)
-Horrible dash cracks

Those are current problems. I didn't really have many problems when I was under warranty. My transmission went out, but that pretty typical on a bunch of 04 tl's. I had 2 window actuators replaced also under warranty.

Im glad your car is working so great. My car still runs extremely smooth at a still young age of 93k. Its just alot of the interior things that have been getting a bit weird. Anyways, Congratulations, and I wish you many more miles!

Nope. No cracks. I never put anything on it until a few months ago when I decided to get rid of that white residue/crap on the dash by using Aerospace 303 on it. At my house I keep it parked in the garage. At the various jobs I've had, it's either been in a parking garage or parked directly out in the sun. It's probably been out in the sun/elements 60% of the time at work and has spent a lot of time out in the Dallas sun.

I honestly don't really baby the car. I do wash it every 1-2 weeks, and it's at one of those drive thru car washes, so nothing special.

Nice! I'm at 110k myself and hope I can reach 250k before any major repairs. I've already completed timing belt and the 105k service.

Try changing your O2 sensors before the cats. After a while they might still work OK but the rise time transition times between max and minimum voltage slows down.

Nice write-up. My 03 CL-S6 has similar stuff, except I replace brake pads alot more frequently and use aftermarket stuff, and I have no noises.

Alot of my problems are due to mods I've done. I'm sure the car would have alot less rattles/squeaks, would not have popped THREE tires due to potholes, and wouldn't have clunking from the RSB.

I've been putting off the timing belt, more for lack of desire to put out $750, but it'll have to be done soon. I just hit 140k.

I have a couple interior lights out, and the actual heated seat elements all have gone out. Some were still in warranty time, but my driver's seat back is now out again.

Thumbs up

I am at about 148,000 right now on my 2004 5AT and the only issues I've run into are replacing a bad O2 sensor and regular maintenance.

But I suspect that I have a leaking oil seal, and I talked to the dealer and they say it's about 10 hours of labor/$800+ to fix. We'll see if this really is the case and then act on it.

But I can honestly say I love my TL, it's definitely built like a rock.

Congratulations!

My '06 just cleared 30,000 miles, so at that rate mine will be 20 years old by the time I get to 150k.

My TL may outlive me...

Did you happen to have the Power Steering recall done and if so, how long ago (both in time and miles)? There are several of us who developed a main seal leak AFTER having the PS recall done. Lucky for me, mine only leaked a little on the underbody and then stopped.

FYI, the seal is only $8, the rest of the cost is all labor. I'd wait a while and see if the leak gets worse. It may stop on it's own.

There's somebody on here (mmade22) that's already got over 200k on his '05. Now that's a drivin' fool.

I've been waiting to hit the 150,000 mile mark for a while and knew I would hit it on that trip and about where I'd hit it. Had to take the pic as a memento. lol. It was early in the morning on a non-busy interstate, so that made it easier.

I did, actually- the took care of that sometime this spring, as well as the recall for the windshield wiper motor. I can check my receipts once I get home (I'm waiting for class to start up here on campus) and let you know specifically.

That's interesting that the leak happened AFTER the recall work...I had no issues and when I took it for a tranny fluid flush last week that's when they noticed it. I changed my oil right after I got the ATF flush (I was planning to do it anyway) and I noticed the bolt dripped a grand total of two drops and then it stopped since then.

And I have checked my parking spot every time I use the car ever since and I haven't noticed anything so it may have gone away. I certainly haven't had a drop in oil pressure or capacity so I've been hoping it plays out on its own.

Especially with the northern Utah winter coming (it starts snowing usually on Halloween, doesn't go away until May). If I need to get it taken care of, I'd rather get it done sooner than later...winter is awful here, it's colder than a witch's teat up here.

Thank you immensely for the heads-up! Does anyone know what about the PS recall could be correlated with the leak?

Yeah, it is curious that these leaks have only happened after the PS recall. If you look at the power steering TSB (pg 8, step 31), it calls for jacking the engine. I'm convinced this is what is causing the leaks...

http://techinfo.honda.com/Rjanisis/pubs/SB/b08-016.pdf

Your leaks sounds much like mine. Visible on the undercarriage, but not dripping on the floor. I didn't even know if was leaking until I went under the car to do a transmission fluid replacement. Here's the thread with a picture of my leak:

Not gonna lie, I started laughing hysterically when I saw that the directions on the TSB called for lifting the engine with a block of wood. I was crossing my fingers before I clicked the link that you were just being reaaaaally funny.

As for the other thread, I found it extremely telling that as you mentioned, you're lifting 2/3 of the car's weight on that one mount using the TSB repair procedure. That is asking for trouble.

So your leak just stopped on my own? I'm hoping mine will do the same, especially since I've seen no evidence of problems so far.

Yeah, the whole leak happened and then stopped on it's own. It was enough to see on the housing, but didn't even drip on the plastic tray/skid plate.

Doesn't use a drop of oil. Hopefully your leak will be the same.

O2 sensors switch between rich lean (low voltage high voltage) over time the switching time becomes slower and affects A/F ratio. There is supposed to be about 200 millisecond delay from low to high if I remember correctly.
