The reason why I bought those is because my brother wanted some for his QX56. After purchasing the first set I realized I ordered the wrong ones and ordered another set soon after. I told myself that if they are brighter than my current VLED one I was going to replace it.
I had CREE style LED reverse lights 3-4 years ago and they sucked. However years ago the CREE reverse lights only consisted of a LED (or 2) behind a glass/plastic projector lens. Output sucked because it shined light straight forward and not at the ground. When reversing at night you want to see what's on the ground near the car, not the color of the house across the street. On my backup camera it showed up as a giant white hotspot in the center of the display. It was useless, you couldn't make anything out.
These new style reverse lights incorporate a projector style lens as well as LEDs shining light 360 degrees around the bulb.
I don't know much about LED chips however I know for sure that you can't judge brightness solely on "the size of the LED" on the bulb. There are other factors that determine the brightness output of the LED chip.
A smaller LED chip can outshine a bigger LED chip even if the power source is the same between the two.
"5050 SMD" chips were known for being very bright (they are pretty big like you mentioned) however I have come across many smaller single LED chips that have the brightness equivalent to 3 or 5 "5050 SMD" chips together.
I have a 08 with a standard backup camera. The reason why I first purchased LED reverse lights (back in 2011) in the first place was to improve images in the back-up camera at night.
My brothers QX56 also has a standard back-up camera and he's getting LED reverse lights for the exact same reason.
Yeah I agree 100%. That's why I said it's a better indicator, not the best. The perfect example of this is the newish 2323 LEDs. They're tiny but apparently they shine like crazy. I haven't had the chance to try them out yet though.

Yes, i understand, am purchasing for same reason. But, i would like to know what works best, without seeing just white light on the camera.

So I got around to installing them today. They would NOT fit into my brothers QX56 reverse light housings because the LED bulbs are TOO LONG. When trying to slide the LEDs into the housing, the bulbs would actually hit the plastic lens of the housing so you could not fully seat the bulb to lock it in place.
Instead I installed them on my dads Infiniti EX35. They fit fine. I actually installed one 2323 and one 2538 bulb on each side to compare it. The brightness of both were pretty identical. Looking at the reflection of the light on the wall as well as looking at both the lights directly the brightness of both were similar.
The only difference is the 2323 bulb appeared closer to pure 5k white while the 2538 appeared more 6k white. Other than that, the brightness are identical.
I think I am going to try out those $25 from ebay for my TL instead.

I'll never understand why so many sellers and customers post pictures of led reverse lights will looking at them directly. Of course they are going to appear bright when you take a picture looking directly at the lights.
They should post pictures of the before and after of the light output that hits the ground. That's what matters most

Arguably, I believe reverse lights aren't meant to illuminate on the ground but directly behind your car. The backup cam should not replace anyone eyes.
Honestly I still have not purchased any LED Lights. Two Reasons 1. its too damn cold to change them out right now. and 2. There are too many to choose from. I feel like if I buy one I will want another. I will say this I do have an AEM V2 on its way along with pre filter and I just received OEM type-s pedals

You're right about the back up camera shouldn't replace anyone eyes, however I've owned my TL for 4 years and the only time I turned my head around to look back while reversing was the first 2 weeks of owning the car.
I wasnt familiar to using a back up camera. After I got used to it I can honestly say I never completely turn my head to look behind my car while reversing anymore and it's been over 4 years.
The only time I don't use the camera while reversing is when I look at the side view mirrors to see how close my car is to the curb (don't want to curb rash my rims) or to another car/wall (don't want to scratch my car or anyone's car).
I find it very useful to have reverse lights that illuminate a little bit of the sides of the car while backing up at night. It helps you see objects close to the car at night like curbs.
My vled reverse lights gets the job done. They perform very well illuminating images in the camera as well as things directly behind the car. I just want something even more bright but do not want hid reverse lights.
