jerking 6 speed

jerking 6 speed

does anyone's 6 sp MT jerk when shifting and going over bumps? it feels like when I'm driving in LA, I have to shift then immediately put my second hand on the steering wheel to control the steering wheel...and when I take off from a full stop, the steering wheel also pulls before i drive...is this normal?

He may be talking about torque steer from a start, and the way a FWD car will lose its footing a little over bumps. If so, that's normal traits

Yep, that's "torque steer" which is much more evident in the 6 spd manual than in the 5AT. Just get used to it. You will have it as long as you have the car.

You mean you shift while going over bumps?

it feels like when I'm driving in LA,
So this only happens in L.A.?

I have to shift then immediately put my second hand on the steering wheel to control the steering wheel
And it can't be controlled by one hand....

...and when I take off from a full stop, the steering wheel also pulls before i drive
Sorry, I just couldn't get that one

...is this normal?

It's your clutch work while taking off with low RPM's (torque) from a standstill. Give it more gas and let the clutch out more gradually and it should solve the problem.

Sound like the driveline lash. Its the collective tollerances between gears and combined with flexible motor mounts has everything moving around from poor shifting technique.

It should be better in higher gears as there is less of a torque multiplier.

i think it might be torque steer...but it also feels as if...I can feel EVERY SINGLE LITTLE BUMP ON THE ROAD. My steering wheel shakes and vibrates whenever it goes over uneven pavement and also when i'm on the freeway going over 75mph.

also, what exactly does drive by wire mean? does that mean that the steering column is not directly connected to the tires or something..? because if it is, wouldn't there be a way to dampen the shaking and vibrations from my steering wheel. When I drive a 530i, i don't feel this crap...and even when I was in my 96 accord, it wasn't this bad, come to think of it, even when driving the 2003 TL, they were all relatively smooth unless it was a big pot hole.

Drive by wire has nothing to do with the steering column. It relates to the gas pedal and throttle body. Maybe you better check your front tire pressures. Other than that, take it to the dealer.

I believe that you are describing what Kilroy mentioned. When you become smoother with the throttle & clutch, you will experience less drivetrain lash. Also, as Kilroy said, you should be experiencing it the MOST in 1st and 2nd gear. When you become consistent with the throttle you should be fine.

It's probably a dumb question, but did you check your tire pressure? If you over inflate your tires, you're going to feel every single bump on the road.

Did you lower your car, too?
