Getting Car Tinted Today - Need Help!!

Today, I'm getting my car tinted, I have heard that the very rear-side windows (the smallest ones) on the back doors, have had gaps (I believe it's 1/4 inch) becuase of a rubber piece that cannot be removed.

Can any one confirm if they have had there windows tinted, but a didn't have those gaps, that some have spoken of, and is so, how was that done?

Also, when tinting the rear facing window, my guy states he can do it in one piece? Did you guys tint in entire back, or did you not tint the brake light etc.?

Any quick help would be greatly appreciated. I'm standing by...

Mike Smeezy,

PS. By the way, I'm going with 50% tint all the way around, I like light tint and I like going with just one colors, it looks the cleanest to me.

Can't speak for the gap or for an 04, but in regards to the brake light issue I had my 2k's left clear, like the way it came out, and will have my next car's tint (July) not tinting that area again. Regardless of which way you go, I know that the tint will really give a different (better) look to your car and definitely keep both prying eyes and the heat down. Can't wait to see your pics.

NO Gaps on mine. A qualified tinter should be able to work around whatever is needed.

Be SURE to ask the tinter to cut out around the 3rd tail light so the light isn't dimmed.

Tinting

I took my 04 TL to a National Chain "Custom Sun Control". They did an outstanding job... No gaps. Lifetime warranty. You may want to check to see if they are in your area.

BTW, a really good tint job, with excellent film should be in the $300 range...

I agree with automophile, My installer said it was a pain to get the tint in there but did an excellent job.
I had the 35% all around for the same reason don't like two different tint shades.
I would post a picture but can't figure out how with the new servers. Check out my gallery if they are working.
Talk to your installer about protecting the felt strip on the rear decklid, if they get it too wet, the felt will come out and it will start rattling.

Thanks guys for all of your quick replys, the car is at the shop as we speak, it cost $185 (he is given me a deal) I have had at least 5 cars tinted at this place.

I took yours and Oswald Vater advice and decide to not tint the rear brake light, but as a side note, since the tint is only %50, it is very light, and I dont' think if would made a big difference in my case. If I went with limo or a darker tint, that could of been an issue, but to be on the safe side, the brake light is not being tinted.

Thanks again,

Mike Smeezy

If I miss, I'm sorry. May I know what kind of film (Materials) you're gonna put on? Thanks.

Vffr1 - Please keep us posted with:

1. Brand of film.
2. usage of felt on roll windows.
3. Type of warrantee - does it cover scratches?

I live in the bay area and I am interested in getting my tint done as well. I am going for a lighter tint especially the back window. I'm not sure how it will look if I get the light tint in the back window (I think that will be 50%) and a darker on the side windows (I think that iwll be 35%). I prefer to see well when backing up when it is dark.

Good tinters (is that they're called?) will first size the film by applying it to the outside of the glass being tinted. The he/she will shrink (heat gun) and trim to size. After spraying to wet the film, it'll be applied to the inside glass and the air bubbles will be squeeged out. Most would not not even think of covering the third brake light, They would just work around it.

Anyone know of a good place in the DC/Northern Virginia area to get tinting done? I'm new to the area and also new to tinting, so I don't want a botched job.

Also interested in getting tint done, and not sure where to go. Please keep us posted!

And to add to the list of things to look out for after tinting...
4. Does this particular tint affect navi?

Thanks!

I just got my car back and it looks great!!! Like I stated, I went with %50, which should of been pretty light as %5, %20, %35, %50 and %70 are offered at this shop (%5 is the darkest and %70 is the lightest for those who don’t know)

Since my cars is dark (anthracite/ebony) the %50 looks darker than planned, but I'm still happy. I can't imagine going any darker, you %20-%35 guys are brave.

To answer your questions:
1. Thermogaurd
2. No, I didn't check though
3. Lifetime, with 2 years labor
4. No doesn’t affect the Navi

J&C Glass Tinting is located at: 2915 Monterey Road, in San Jose, they can be reached at: (408) 224-6061. Total came to $189.00 and there is no gap in the rear window as some others have expierenced.

Ask for Juan and let him know Michael sent you, I will tell you up front the place is a dump, but I've been going there since 1985, and the car I had tinted then (my 1984 Mustang GT350) remains with no tinting problems to this day.

Hope this helps. I’ll post pictures after Zaino

I'm going to get it done tomorrow morning.

I asked for Juan, so I guess that was who I spoke with.

I have the quartz interior, so I'm not completely in the same boat as some of you guys.

Do you think I should go 35%, since I have a lighter color interior???

Shoot, I still can't decide whether to go 35% or 50%.

HELP!!!

Yeah, why did he quote daikon more than Mike? That makes no sense.

And daikon -- how are you able to take it all the way down to SJ to get it tinted? Don't you have to work?

Unemployment is great, isn't it? hahah.

I'm guess he quoted me more because I'm a first-time customer, whereas Mike's been tinting with them since 1985?

$225 isn't bad I don't think. I was quoted $300+ from some guy that does it professionally for Oakland Acura. :wow: Pshhhh...riiiiiiiiight.

Mayve where your at but not around here. Llumar Stealth was $160 installed by the same qualified guy that does 99% of the BMW's and Benz dealers cars.

I'm still a fan of lighter tint, if I had your car I would do %50 all around.

PS. I rolled down my window this moring, and there is a scratch issues, talk to Jaun about that, I will be in at noon to get this corrected, if your there, I'll introduce myself.

Since your are going back to Juan to fix the scratch, can you please ask him if he installs the felt? If yes, how much more?

Hey, Mike...I got there around 2:30 to pick-up the car, so I guess I missed you.

I forgot about asking the felt thing. What did he say about yours?

I ended up getting the 50% like you, and am actually very happy with it. It turned out darker than the sample that he showed in the beginning, but the end product is exactly what I was looking for

I paid $230 total. Said the same about the warranty: lifetime and 2yrs labor.

I asked Jaun's son (Juan was not there) about the felt and he stated that they have never done and have on knowledge of felt.

Note: I recall having a friend that had a 1986 Camero, and he would take a cloth and rub his finger in the grove to keep that area clean, so as to prevent scrathes with his tint.

I'm sorry I missed you but I did get to see your car (Team Antracite), what is that "thing" you have attached to your center air vent?

Bye the way, do you think we got %50 tint, it looks really dark to me? I had %50 tint done on my sisters cars, and it was WAY lighter, given her car was lighter (silver, with tan interior), it should'nt of made that big a difference.

Lastly, they covered my break lamps even though I asked them not too, it looks like they covered yours too, but I could see yours red lamps, but I couldn't see mine?

Hope you can make my 3rd Genners Meet - TBD.

I forgot to ask about the felt thing...what did he say to you about that?

I was there around 2:30pm to pick-up the car, so I missed you by a couple hours probably.

That thing on the center vent is a scented air freshener.

Yeah, the 50% does look somewhat darker than expected. Personally, I thought it sort of resembled the 35%, but perhaps because it's still wet? After a few days, it should dry and look lighter maybe?

I'm not sure if my brake lamp was covered...I took a quick glance and it sort of looks like it is, but I can't be sure. Regardless, I didn't specify to Juan whether or not to cover it...but I don't really care.

All-in-all, I'm pretty happy about the tint job. Looks good to me!

3rd Gen meet?! When? Where? I'm up for it!
