Extended Warranties: What's the verdict?

Hey all:

So now that there's been a few months of ownership for these 04 TLs, what's the verdict on the Acura Extended Warranty? Is it something I should consider picking up? The best price I've gotten without much haggling is $1100. I've read that some folks have purchased for far less than that, at about $950 or so.

Does the extended warranty cover things like a broken water pump? I had to get that replaced in my 94 Camry about 2 years ago and that cost me close to $500 (mostly labor), but I think something like that is a wear and tear item. Can someone confirm?

I know there were some postings about extended warranties a while back, but I figured I could use this post to get a general feeling for what people are buying (if anything) now in 2004.

* Did you buy one? If so, right at the dealership or did you shop around?
* What price did you pay?
* Was yours the 7/100k $0 deductible?

Thanks for your help!

Amazing, I wanted to get the extended warranty, but the sales guy said it was close to $3000. I passed of course, but I would have jumped all over it for $1000 as there are many electronic gizmos that could go wrong.

I bought an extended warranty for my wife's Sienna and it has paid for it self for all the electronic work done (sliding door twice at $600 pop).

Well, I'm not too crazy about extended warrenties, but since I drive so much, I decided to buy one. I bought it before, but to use it after your factory warrenty expires, it's a real pain.

First of all, they want you to go to the dealer where you purchase the warrenty. You could take it somewhere else, but you have to get an approval from the dealer you bought the warrenty and the dealer you want to take it to. If they provide a rental car, it's usually the cheapest available. i.e. I had 93 Legend Coupe, and they gave me Geo Metro for a rental. I guess, it's more for piece of mind.

Depending on what kind of warrenty you get, the coverage will differ. Keep in mind that, if you want to use this warrenty, dealer will not just fix the car. They inspect and diagnose it first and tell you if you qualify for a warrenty work.

The one I bought was total coverage set. There were power trane package and the technology package. They said if you have navigation, you should get the technology package which cost around $200 extra. The one I got covers both, but with $50 deductable. I got it for $999.

That doesn't sound anything like the Acura Care Extended Warranty. According to the policy, that warranty covers all factory-installed electronics (including the navigation system and sound system) and you can obtain warranty work at any Acura dealership.

Who sold you the warranty?

Lore, the lowest price I could remember is $900 by Donte99TL, TL Extended Warranty. I have to say it's impossible to catch up.

I didn't get extended warranty yet, if I keep this 04TL as ususal for 6-9 years, I may buy it. But, I may ignore this EW if I will shop 08TL or 09RL.

However, my dealership did give me the quote in Jan/04. It's Acura Care EW by American Honda Finance Corp. This EW will be honored in any Acura dealership in states.

0 deductible, 7yr/100k, $1650.00 plus Tax
0 deductible, 7yr/75k, $1455.00 plus Tax

I should pay $0 surcharges if purchasing EW up to 24 months or 24k after my delivery date.
$90.00, up to 36 months/36k
$120.00, up to 48 months/50k

The price is higher than most of other ppl's though.

Lore I bought it, a little expensive from the dealer. 7yr/100K, 0 deductible, refundable any time for $1895. I bought it for peace of mind since I had replaced radiator on my Integra before for $1100 total part and labor from the dealer.

Lore,

The best price I found on EW for 2004TL:
$1120 - $0 deductible
$1060 - $50 deductible
http://acuraofmissionviejo.com/acura-care-quote.asp

Most people would purchase $0 deductible since the price different is only $60.
This EW is provided by Honda/Acura so you can have repair perform by any Acura service dealer.

Just make sure you don't purchase 3rd party EW.
These are the EW that forces you to for repair done by their appoved service stations.

Ah yes, Donte99TL's warranty price. I still need to call the dealer from where he purchased it.

So $900 seems to be the lowest price? I'm thinking I may want to shop the 08TL as well, but who knows. Anybody else pick up a warranty?

You're right, I don't think this is Acura extended warranty. It does cover all factory-installed electronics, including the nav. Technically, you can get warranty work done at any Acura dealer, they just preferr to get work done at their place.

I got it from Cerritos Acura in CA.

Got the full Acura Extended Warranty with all the extras, 7/100k, on a 2004 TL for $1007. They wanted over $1800 to start.

I get a new car every 3-4 years so I'm not going to get the extended warranty.

Remember, the 7/100 is really only a "3 yr" warranty, since it comes with 4 yr. (Milage may, of course, chang this somewhat).

I bought mine at the dealership since I put so many miles on my car. I figured that I will use up the exsisting warranty in about 2.5 yrs, so this will "extented" my warranty to at least 5 years without having to spend a lot of money later on expensive electrical/engine repair. I paid $1100.00 for a $0 deductible 7/100,000

Does anyone know if this extended warranty covers things like a broken water pump?

The Acura Care EW covers everything except "wear & tear" items i.e. brake pads, belts, hoses, trim, batteries, etc. I had a Honda EW on my 98 Accord and they replaced the Water Pump under the extended warranty at about 60K miles.

When you replace the water pump, generally you want to replace the timing belt, the hoses, etc. So if the pump breaks and they cover that, will they replace the other parts for no cost under warranty?

I don't think so...maybe if the timing belt or the drive belts broke because of the water pump failure. However, if the timing belt or drive belts were in need of replacement, that would be the time to have it done because it would probably be less additional labor charge at that time.

I bought the Acura EW with my car from Los Gatos Acura. 7 year, 100,000 miles, no deductable. $1200.00, but no refund option if not used.
