Excessive Torque Steer???

Sup guys, got a problem... Seems like the power steering's working too good, because if i'm gunning it and hit the higher rpms, the steering wheel seems to jump to the left or right causing my car to go into another persin's lane. Is this normal? I guess Im not sure if it is because my previous car was a 2G auto. I've driven a g35, but that's rear wheel. ANy help? Thanks!

Welcome to the world of FWD vehicles. Wait until your in a turn and need to hit the gas, then it becomes fun to corrrect the path of the car. No wonder why more and more are going to RWD or AWD.

first of all dont go into a turn to fast, its not ment to be a track car. But other then that in a straight line i actually enjoy it it feels brutal as if all hell broke loose !!!

why are you so hard on the throttle--guessing you are near other cars--when you could `power wander` into their lane,,,thats a time for slowing down in case some idiot wanders into YOUR lane!!! They are on the phone,,eating smoking fighting with the kids in back seat,,,

I take it easiest on the street--- where stupidity rules--
they just caught the governators wife 3 times on camera driving while using cell phone--left hand holding phone to ear- no way to signal turn intention,,,dangerous indeed-
Been illegal in Ca for over a year- yet Arnolds wife doesnt have a headset or hands free device yet??

Read the owner book for your new ride- it has totally different traction systems- it handles and reacts different than a gen2

Get to a track day as soon as possible- where a pro race driver can correct bad driving habits you have picked up, and make you smoother and faster-
using the car instead of fighting it
200-250 bucks for a full day is cheaper than any speeding ticket!

If either of these quotes where directed toward my response, I’d like to clarify the specific situation:
End of our road at a stop, turning right onto the highway and up a hill. No car approaching, but as I turned, a car came around the curve to my left, so I blipped the throttle in the middle of the turn, not floored, just cracked, and the people that are familiar with FWD know the end result. FWD is archaic, and was done many years ago so a drive train package could be installed very easily at the factory, affords more interior space without the d/s hump, was less costly and much better for the manufacturer’s bottom line. Handling is also compromised, as the weight distribution for the TL is 62/38, compared to, let’s use an Infinity 52/48, or the 335i at 50/50, but for normal everyday driving, most won’t notice the difference.

Got to love watching races with FWD cars when the rear wheel is lifted off the ground in sharp bends. Great feat of engineering, but many are converting back to RWD, an AWD system, or the unique Acura SH-AWD system

Off to breakfast!

I drive at highway speeds on the highway but generally do not speed on regular roads. I may sometimes gun it a little when I am merging on highway lanes. I can honestly say with my average type of driving that I have noticed any kind of torque steer.

As all FWD vehicles have torque steer to some degree, but in the TL with only 258HP in a 3600lb vehicle, you'll feel no torque steer when vehicle is at speed. Give it a try from a stop, but hold on to the wheel. Like I said previously, most aren't aware of the phenomenon.

Dunno I havent had much with rolling torque steer...However from a dig thats a different story. Usually turning I ease it in until I am almost straight then punch it...But it could help that I have a good set of tires and my rims are heavy as shit. Good thing I am getting rid of them soon.

I get a subtle torque steer from the the 5AT however it seems like only in the first 2 gears, but the 5AT has torque sensing powersteering so it reduces power.

I had a friend with an 80's Dodge Colt GLH The thing was a monster, beat Mustang GTs but THAT was torque steer, you could make a right turn just by flooring it!

My CLs has more power than stock and I can barely sense any torque steer at any time, I read this thread yesterday in the morning and drove all day looking for it and had to seriously work at getting a small amount.

I find it hard to believe third gens are worse than second gens, especially with less power.

Similar thing happened to me. I was going uphill, and it was raining. Guy in front of me was going like 20 under the limit, so I changed lanes and gunned it. Steering wheel ripped out of my hands, and the car swerved towards the next lane to my left, but I managed to out-wrestle the car and stay in my own lane.

Coincidently, I was in the same situation with my G, on the same section of road... In that instance, when I gunned it, the tail wiggled slightly, but I was easily able to rectify the situation. Granted, some people may freak out if the tail steps out, but I grew up on RWD cars, so I knew what I was doing. Plus the stability control corrected the situation for me, as I really didn't even need to do anything.

In the TL, the VSA was blinking like crazy, but I still had to wrestle the steering wheel to track where I wanted it to go.

What tires are you rolling on? My 2G TL was rolling on sh!tty ass tires, so I didn't notice the torque steer too much until I switched out the tires... Our 3G TL, I pretty much tossed the tires in the trash when I got the car.

But yeah, the TL's Torque Steer isn't terrible... Come for a ride in my Grand Prix GTP, with it's S/C engine, and I'll show you massive torque steer

It's a matter of getting used to it and knowing when you'll need to compensate. Everyone can go on and on about how to drive, but there are times when you need to nail the throttle and it's going to wander a bit. If you totally let the wheel go, it's going to change lanes, but hanging on when you know it's coming makes it totally controllable.

This is not unusual on powerful FWD vehicles. Though I've read the FWD 300hp Ford Focus RS amazingly has none.

The LSD limits it somewhat, but the torque steer on my 6MT TL-S while hammering it coming out of a turn in 2nd gear is brutal.

If this car was RWD it would be near perfect, IMO. I'll never get another FWD car after this one.

Get use to it mang!

I use to be scared to gun it when I first got the car cuz too much torque steer.. But what you're experiencing is completely normal. but also the base model might have more torque steer than the type-s due to a different rack and pinion, I could be wrong.

I agree! It's too bad the 3G didn't come in a 6MT SH-AWD or RWD option.

Does anyone know if this is true? If it is, could this be swapped to a older model 3G?
