Engine paint failure

So I am too embarassed to post pics, but i decided to take a can of white spray paint to my WDP TL. It doesn't look that good and I need to order new panels to replace the spray painted ones. I need to confirm that I am ordering the right parts-

please check me on the following-

-Right side battery cover

Part # 005 31531-SEP-A00 COVER, BATTERY 001 2004 TL 17.05 12.79

http://www.acuraoemparts.com/delray/...All&vinsrch=no

-Top right above battery

Part # 74226-SEP-A00 EXTENSION, COWL TOP DRIVER 001 2004 TL 23.63 17.72

http://www.acuraoemparts.com/delray/...All&vinsrch=no

Bottom left covering windshield spray-

Part # 002 74119-SEP-A02 GARNISH, R. DAMPER HOUSE 001 2004 TL 24.25 18.19

Same site as above

Top left above windshield washer

Part # Qty:
003 74225-SEP-A02 EXTENSION, COWL TOP PASSENGER 001 2004 TL 26.58 19.94

Same site as above.

Am I correct? Thanks

You are correct.

You gotta have more faith in yourself - I think it's quite clear which part is which haha.

You should post pics. Seriously.

It might look like shit, but it might still be fairly easy to fix. Some sanding and additional prep, etc., and you might be ready to re-spray.

Try taking a heat gun or a good hair dryer to the panels .. you will be suprised .. sometimes the paint will lift right off ...yes including engine or caliper paint .. the plastic & paint expand at different rates .. I have done it on the Tl and Passat engine covers.

Yeah, don't spend money on the new covers. You can definitely sand it down and paint it over again. It'll be a learning experience anyway.

Now... time for pics!

Sand them down and repaint. You might also check the BM to see if there are any for sale. I think I saw a set a while back.

Stripping paint off of plastic is easy. Just get some 91% rubbing alcohol and soak the panels in it. It won't hurt the plastic and after a few hours the paint will just wash off with water. It's an old car modeling trick that has worked every time for me. A bottle of the stuff will only cost about $1. If you go that route pick up a few bottles though.

Okay so I went out and bought mineral spirits. 3 gallons. 20 bucks.

I put them in a bucket soaking in it yesterday. It has been 24 hours and the paint isnt really peeling off, but i can scratch it off. So i guess it is working.

Does anyone think that rubbing alcohol will work better than this?

Oh and i almost forgot...

yeah yeah yeah everyone point and laugh...

Mineral spirits is the wrong solvent for that paint .. Prepsol would be more suitable ... but did you try a heat gun or a hot hair dryer like I suggested?

Brake and parts cleaner strips spray paint off like water, but be very careful of where you use it and how you dispose of it.

You could of just picked up a can of aircraft paint remover and sprayed it and watched the paint come off.

Putter actually.

I thought about buying new props, but the old basement putter works way too damn good!

Well im sorry to disappoint.

Maybe in 10 years our cars will be like the 90's civics of today and people will take spray paint to every panel on the car. That would be my idea of disaster.

Explain. Has anyone else used this?

Anyone use this?

I have stripped parts before with this stuff, but only metal parts. Standard "aircraft paint stripper" will most likely damage most plastics. In general plastics are more difficult to paint properly, and strip properly. Most paint stripper brands have a special stripper for plastic parts. I know Klean-Strip brand has one in a spray can.

On plastics with poor adhesion, I've used high CFM compressed air to blow away flaking paint. Also if you do a google search, you should find some good methods to remove the paint on plastics.
