Closing in on first j35a8 startup and have a question

I'll make this as concise as possible and get to the point:
I have a j35a8 swap that's currently installed into my 98 Accord and last night came down to the actual startup with no, um....startup. :-)

So then, have a 2007 TL-S ECM (37820-rdb-a53) I'm using and even installed a 07-08 TL-S immobilizer ring. The issue I'm having is that I was unable to program the key and kept saying there is communication between the key and ring. I found out that the key ring I'm using is from an 08 TL-S (39730-scv-a01) which has a different part number from an 07 TL-S ring (39730-sda-a11) but they share same pins/circuit locations, they're both type IV immobilizer systems, everything. It's not a big deal for me to order the 07 key ring ($35) but I'm really just trying to find out if there's anyone here in the 3g community that's had any run ins with such an issue or incident?

The immobilizer (green key) light is flashing indicating immobilizer ecu activity but no luck. Any help or ideas???

The light should stop flashing after a few flashes if you insert a correctly coded key. If the light continues to flash, the key is not correctly coded to the immobilizer/ecu. The car will still crank over w/o the correct key.

You really need the matched pair of ECU & Immobilizer from the same donor car. I'm also wondering if the TL-S (Denso) ECU will work w/o all of the auxiliary components (ABS, cluster, etc.).

Do you have a build thread? This sounds like quite a project.

Sure do:

Yes, the ECM/immobilizer can actually be considered a "full-standalone" engine management system contrary to popular belief on most forums. I did install the cluster just so I could have accurate gauges and instrumentation but wasn't required. The cluster is a gateway for all the modules to communicate though and because I only have the powertrain installed in the car, it really didn't require this gateway.

I could have bought a matched key/immobilzer/ECM BUT I already had this set in the shop so figured why not? As an update, I just found out that my programming software isn't updated to do type IV immobilizers but will download that first thing in the morning and see what happens.

Also, found out two other things:
1. Type IV immobilizers require a code referred to as a "1st pass" that enables the immobilizer and ECM to be programmed for starting. These are VIN specific codes that can be obtained from the Acura dealer or a website called Vinlocks.com that charges $12.00 per code...this is where I just obtained mine from.

2. Acura/Honda also has something called a "brake code" which is essentially a code that is entered using both the parking brake and a special procedure to start the vehicle with using a programmed transponder key or a transponder key at all. Again, this code can only be obtained through Acura and is also VIN specific.

I think the earlier Motorola ECUs (04-06? TL, 03?-07 Accord) were more integrated into all of the other sub-systems. It's good to know that this new TL-S (Denso) ECU is more modular.

Wiki says that one of the few changes in 08 included the immobilizer.

Not sure if that means the key also or what. Just throwing that out there.

Thanks for the replies everybody. I wasn't aware of any of any immobilizer changes (although I did notice the different part numbers as mentioned) so that could be it. I actually found out that my software on my programming tool wasn't updated for the type IV immobilizer and this could also be the issue so I updated that about 20 minutes ago and will try that as soon as I walk into the shop tomorrow morning....and I do mean that literally. :-)

After finding out about the 5-digit 1st pass code earlier today in dawned on me that my programmer never mentioned anything about the code and was acting along the same procedures as the previous immobilizer systems. This could be why there was no communication! But one thing struck me odd was Ive programmed 3 different MDX keys with the tool before and had no complications whatsoever....however they use a type VI system.

I'll update this thread tomorrow, thanks again people!

Good luck with the swap. I almost went down the path of a J35 swap into my old S2000.
