Check Engine Light
Check Engine Light
Its on again (*grumbles*). I know it isn't due to my resonator change because no one else has had the exhaust changed with the light on, and because this is the third time already. Still though, they don't know that, and I've heard some bad stories about dealers being dumbasses, so I am thinking about going and paying the 25 bucks to have the resonator welded back in during my lunch break so that they don't refuse service or tell me my warranty is voided and I messed my car up. I don't think its a bad idea, but I'd like a second opinion from you guys.
Btw, if they see the welds, I'll just say I didn't touch the car. I'm going to take the car out tonight for a drive to see if the light stays on under all conditions. Thanks for the help.

if you know for sure that the resonator didnt cause it, then they cant void the warrenty. they cant void the warrenty unless they prove that it is caused by the removed resonator. car should have set a DTC(diagnostic trouble code).
Still, I don't want to be given a hard time, and I am thinking it would be best, because if they can't fix it, I am filing for the lemon law. They could use that "mod" against me since the MIL sometimes comes on for emissions problems.
gale, understand your frustration. Did you have some troubles with gas mileage and the check engine light befor? Did they ever fix the mileage problem? If so what was the resolution? Getting the resonator put back on is a good idea. Especially with an engine code some dealers can find all sorts of reasons the light came on especially messing around with the exhaust, even though it probabaly had absoulutly nothing to do with the light. Good luck and keep us posted.

Yeah but the fact that all the resonators are in place and there are no leaks means that it won't be causing the problem. And if they see the welds I'll just shrug it off and say I never saw them.
Wouldn't it make sense to determine what the DTC is first? Find someone with a scan tool, or AutoZone will usually pull it for you. It is hard to believe a simple removal of the resonator would cause this - perhaps something got damaged in the process? I assume you pulled the resonator to get more or a different exhaust note, or both, right?
Yeah I know, but still, if its not there they could always use it against me in court if the car turns out to be a lemon. Say since its an emissions light and they couldn't find the problem chances are its the exhaust (when I know it isn't).
Anyway, I had put put back in today. :P
But yeah, it would make sense to find out the DTC first, but since when did dealers make sense? I just wanted to avoid the problem. And yeah, I took the resonator out to get a different exhaust note, and a bit louder.

Nah, I decided not to mess with my exhaust anymore. Spent over 100 dollars getting both taken off, then one back one, then the other back on. I feel like I just wasted the money, and I did, so I'm done with my exhaust. I did it in the first place to get a nicer sounding exhaust really, but knowing dealers its going to cause more problems than enjoyment.
