Broken Back Tail Light (How much does it cost?) *pics*

Some A Hole vandelized my car last night during the new years parties.

Does anyone know how much it will cost to replace the plastic brake light cover?

Its severly cracked and can't be properly repaired

Labor costs too.?

NOTE: I'm not going to get mad about this, its only a car...even though I would love to take my anger out...its only a car, and won't help the situation...breathe jerky, breathe...

Sorry to hear about the damage. I can't believe someone broke your tail light intentionally!

Here is the part #. It says $150ish. I am sure you can replace it by yourself. Good luck.

well yes its only a car. but i dont think from other cars that i have done this for.. You cant just replace the red plastic outside. they will sell you the whole assembly. I think its because they need to make sure its properly sealed and all. imagine them just selling the outside red plastic. And people not putting them right.. having a fishtank in there... lol.. so i am not sure how this car is. But i am pretty sure you will have to remove the carpet inside. take out about 4 screws or so.. and pull out. just disconect lights. then replace with new one and insert lights back in the new one. thats all. no price.. sorry. i have no idea..

According to the service manual, you have to remove the rear bumper, and then the trim panel inside the trunk. Then there's a few mounting nuts and screws and the tail light is out. It doesn't look very hard to do. I think there is a picture somewhere on removing the bumper, but if you need it I will scan and post it for you. Same with the trim panel.

The price shown to the customer in the link is $110.72 + shipping, which will probably save about $40-45 if purchased from the dealer.

If i paid the dealer to do it, does anyone have an idea of how much labor (or how many hours) this could take?

(i have comprehensive 100 dollar deductible, since i was paranoid for things like this to happen...so its not too big of a deal)

Glad you're back...Try to check with your insurance...Deductible (Vandalism) should not apply when it is vandalism. At least with my insurance (AllState) it is 100% covered.

Otherwise just by the part and we can install it.

Shouldn't take more than an hour. $60-70.

You could take a crack at doing it yourself... it's only a few bolts and a couple clips

Done it a dozen times without any trouble... and I'm not so mechanically inclined

Thanks everyone, Ill give it a shot and get back to you all on the status, maybe take some pics so others can see what to do, in case you get into my situation..

The story by the way was, i was on broadway with my friends, and my car was parked in a lot...in northbeach. we were getting pizza, and this drunk or belligerent asshole walks by and smashes it.

we heard the noise, but didnt realize that he hit my car (we were standing pretty close by) we thought he dropped a bottle, he kept walking like it was no big deal. Also, it was dark and there were hundreds of people aroudn, so it was hard to tell what was happening...

Pretty sucky huh!? oh well, its just a car..

one thing im glad though...that i did NOT catch him in the act... I wouldnt want to get in trouble, because i would have confronted him...

Unusual break - looks like he hit it with his fist - strange. Whoa! Looks like he took your license plate too.

Hope it does not cost much to repair. Good luck.

Wait, you have insurance though, right? Why not just make a comprehensive claim? Or is vandalism a collision claim?

I do have comprehensive... but i dont want my rate to go up for something so small... 150 dollars (and i think i can do labor myself) my deductible is 100 so its not really worth it...

I just ordered the part from here

https://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org...s/shopper2.jsp

My buddy who used to work for acura recceomended them, if they do good service, ill reccomended them

Sorry to hear that, Probably some drunken fool. G'luck with the repair. BTW, I'm not sure if it's just me or not but it's hard to see where the damage is from that picture.

From what it sounds, the entire light assembly needs to be replaced to ensure no leakages occur, so it doesn't really matter if the LED lights were damaged or not.

I think you will find is that you will not get the LED unit included with the lamp unit. All you will get is the red lens housing. If the LED's were damaged, you will have to order them separately.

I am going by the picture, which shows the lamp unit and led unit separately, and also by the prices, because the led unit is $100.78, and the lamp unit is $147.62 which is about the right price for just the lens part.

Jerky can confirm this when he gets the lamp unit, unless someone else knows for sure.

Oh okay... Thanks for the clarification. I thought someone mentioned it was the entire unit to prevent leakage in the future, but I guess that isn't possible considering the similar price points.

Jerky, be glad that asshole didn't scratch or dent your fender. The lens is easily replaced and you'll never know it happened, but if he had dented the metal you'd have way more headaches getting it fixed. Good luck!

STATUS UPDATE

I ordered the lamp unit, it came in a big box, i scared some of my co workers

Anyways, we tried to change the lamp unit, but we found out you cant without taking off the bumper.

I have the aspec body kit, so its going to be a lot of screws and crap...

I have some connections at acura dealerships, so im going to get an off duty tech to help me out.

This is such a pain in the ass, to do something so simple.

Anyways....Lesson:

To change the lamp unit, you must take off bumper, as there are small posts on the bottom of the lamp that require you to take off bumper

Please correct me if you have any other news, or can offer some advice

My car was victim to a hit and run this weekend, only damage is a cracked lense housing and a few minor scratches on the bumper that i hope scratch x can take care of. Jerky let me know how the lense replacement works out. Thanks!

this just might be the added security from acura for people that steal headlights...i guess acura wanted to make sure no one steals the tailights either

you would have to open the trunk and remove screws to remove taillights anyways..

i suspect it's rare that people would steal lights from a 35-40k car, and not steal the car itself!!!
