6M vs. 5AT

I went for a test drive this past weekend of the TSX and TL. Two great cars, and I'm torn between the two with the factors of money vs. look. I have until November to decide. My question is why is an automatic and manual, base TL w/ Navi both start at the same price? My understanding was that manual transmisssion's always bumped the MSRP down a little bit. I plan on going with a MT/Nav, so should I look for a lower price than if I went with the AT/Nav? (Base figures for now). What are the chances of 2004's being left over when the 2005's come out?

P.S. How do I put avatars up?

I've heard that the m6's are a little more rare and with how fast these cars are selling m6 buyers have had to pay a little more than the 5at buyers. Like $500 or so.

However, this was about a month ago and the situation could have changed. Check the garage. THere is a price paid thread where people list what transmission and if they got the 5at or m6. That should help you see what you will pay.

Good luck.

Oh yeah, and I doubt there will be many "left over" TL's when the 2005's come out. You could try to buy a 2004 after 2005 changes (if any) are announced and hope to get a little better discount.

Thanks, for the clarification on the pricing of the transmissions. I will check out the garage to see what I can find. Too bad there won't be many 2004's left. I was hoping maybe I could get a good deal on getting a 2004 off a dealers lot when the 2005's rolled in.

The other difference (besides transmissions) between the two is the 6MT comes with Brembo brakes while the 5AT does not. I don't know enough about brakes to know what the price difference is between the Brembo and non-Brembo brakes on the TL, but that is likely part of the reason that there is no price break on the 6MT. BTW, the 6MT is awesome, and the Brembo's are the most responsive brakes of any car I've owned.

Good luck!

There is no price break for the Accord coupe V6. 6mt and 5at both are the same price. But for the 4cylinder, the 5mt is cheaper.

Exactly. Plus the 6mt gets a limited slip differential, and thicker sway bars to help with handling. All that extra stuff keeps the MSRP the same.

6MT also gets different tires to add to the other 'performance' upgrades over the MT.

Good point on the Brembro Brakes, I was thinking the same. So if the 6MT has the Brembro brakes, an A-Spec should also be somewhat less inexpensive as well.

I believe the 6MT and AT both come with the BS EL42's as standard. The 6MT does offer an optional performance summer tire not available on the AT.

Guys, the big differance you are leaving out is a COOL FACTOR. With this kind of performance specs, 6MT is more fun to drive.

6MT is great, you can really squeeze tons and tons of power out of the 3.2V-6 engine, it really is amazing. The Brembo's are awsome and totally worth it. I know that 6MTs have been rare since the beginning. I think Acura only planned to produce like 15% of TLs w/ 6MT. I swapped my EL42s with Toyo Proxes 4 which have great grip.

I'll pass on the Summer Tire option, living in New England, but I should still be able to get Brembo's on a 6MT right? I was banking on getting a 6MT, but with those statistics, I better start looking seriously if I want a 04, or I will probably just wait for the first wave of 05's to make it.

Yes. Brembo front brakes come standard on the TL 6MT.

The day I boiught my TL, Saturday the 17th of July, most of the TLs on the lot were manuals and nearly all had Nav. Last weekend they were still heavy in the manuals (mostly fresh cars from the deliveries of the week).

I had the same experience today. I did a test drive in a TL 6MT. There were six on the lot with no AT's available. All but one was w/o NAV.

Love the the car but the torque steer in the 6MT was too much. I have been spoiled by the RWD S2000 and cannot find another car that comes close to the price/performance of the S.

I think the 6 speed would be the way to go. The obvious reasons are the limited slip differential, the brembos, and most importantly, utilizing all 270 horse!!! If I had the auto, all I would think was how there was power under that hood that I couldn't tap into because I was thinking lazy and got the auto.

Another factor I believe is with a standard, you have to use all limbs to drive, eliminating all those things you do with the other two limbs whens your driving an automatic. When you are driving stick, you are focused and making it a full body sport, not some disconnecting experience by just plopping your elbow on the back seat and cruisin'!!!

I totally agree with you Rodney and that is why I am disappointed that the 6MT didn't suit my tastes on the first test drive. I do like to participate when driving and always have driven MT for myself. My wife's Pathfinder, although a nice vehicle, bores me to death. I cannot occupy my left foot and find myself constantly wanting to shift the thing.

The Brembos and the LSD are icing on the cake. I love the brakes on the 6MT.

RyTyGuy--The A-Spec pricing is no different with the 6MT or Auto. The Brembo brakes do not come as part of the A-Spec package so if you get the Auto the brake pads ONLY are upgrded to a larger pad.

I'd say go 6MT and unleash the full power of the car and handling (with the A-Spec of course).
