how do they work in the US? Here you provide proof of employment, proof you were able to save a down payment (you didn't just stumble across 50k and decided to buy a house... They want to see you be able to save and be responsible), proof of salary, evidence of all debts (they can dig that up on their own), and voila, they spit out a magic number for the maximum you can buy a house for. if you do the max, you'll likely be house poor. Sure you can live there, but you can't do anything else.

Though I've known people who cheated their way into getting a mortgage, for certain reasons. It's not that hard. You just need to know the mortgage broker and lie on the application
