Screw. That.

I'm paying someone to landscape. As much as I need to play the race card, I will...Find me a who is actually useful with yardwork and I'll find you one that drives good too.

Seriously, that boat has sailed anyways. Paid for a landscape design from a local greenhouse and up next is the actual work. We're still finalizing the itty-bitty details I guess of the layout/look but, yeah, I'm paying for my yardwork. Besides, I um...hurt my shoulder.

FWIW, I'm not terribly handy. Sure, part of it is perhaps laziness, I can take the ribbing from you peeps who are ALL much more competent around the yard/house/cars...There is not even a debate there.

It's not a bad idea to get a design put together. There's shit I wouldn't do either, like final grading. Fuck that. I had no desire spreading 8 dump trucks worth of topsoil. The bobcat took an hour to do what would've taken me a week otherwise

Are you getting your fence and deck done as part of that price also?

It's generally comfortable. You guys know what I more or less dabble in...I'm not in a new car every 2-3 years, though. My FX has been with me since 11/2009...so, I mean, it's not like I'm REALLY living that life of amazing luxuries.

I don't also go on crazy-@$$ 3+ week trips to anywhere nice like Europe either. Last major trip out of Canada and across the ocean was 4+ years ago. The rest are just staying within the continent and shorter spurts to places like BAMFF, Seattle, going home to Chicago. Nothing sexy there.

I'd probably wager as a civvy eng and your senior status that we are in the same general pay grade.

The fact you don't deny it and are ok with the ribbing takes all the wind out of my sails. You're ruining my fun, Yumcha!

I think I paid 30 cents per sqft. Installed, it's like 50 cents. Bought a case of beer, called me brother and friend over to help out, Wifey did some too. Done in no time! Though I now have to help my buddy do his yard this year. Dammit.

Deck is done. The deck was part of the house build...since we have a walk-out. The fence is another $8K on top of the yardwork we have budgeted for. I've already reached out to my neighbor, who is amusingly (for moi, at least), a f*cking rich@$$ mainlander kid. He's gotta be 10 years younger than me. Wife is in a red (surprised?) Porsche Cayenne and his "toy" is a stunning WHITE 911 Turbo S. His winter car is a giant pickup right now.

He has FAKE grass.

Anyways, he took one look at his portion of the $8K and said sure. Didn't even ask any questions. The OTHER side of me has not yet responded. Mind you, she's not home often and I wonder if she's a flight attendant or on-the-road professional. Hardly see her. So, hopefully she says yes to the $2K or else, I'm probably eating that. I'd rather not make things awkward between neighbors.

Yeah, c'mon man...I NEVER understood people who tried to over-inflate their skills/talents. At some point, someone who knows their sh*t will call them out. And honestly, if you can imagine my childhood per my posts in the past, I really did not have that aspect taught to me. My parents' focus as any of that generation I guess was piano and skoo. My Dad never ever showed me what was under the hood of the cars...nor how to change tires...I had to learn those on my own when I got my CL-S.

Yeah, we are going to keep the sod to a minimum like my old place...just manageable enough for me to not lose my mind keeping up with weeding. But, otherwise, the rest will be mulch, landscaping rock, and etc.

Hmm...let me see if I can post the current design.

Here's the current concept. The plants are just place-holders since that will be finalized in spring when the perma-frost thaws.

the hell it is.. what type of sod?
I paid about 4k when I bought the house and that's the homie price.
Is that to til and remove the shit that's there too? I paid a bit more because of my irrigation system.
They had to be careful not to break anything, yet they did.

H, you should go with turf mang. It's not bad actually, and for your shitty weather, probably a good choice.

Turf? Yeah, I can't...my budget is a set around and getting that will shoot it past what I'm willing to spend. It's fine. It's about the same as my old place and keeping it green and weed-free is not very difficult...THAT, I can do.

just put down river rock,
but don't run a lawnmower over it.

YOTM will belong to someone else...
although I will admit I've been putting my attention to J's lawn lately...and I don't mean that in a convoluted way either...

LOL...
I actually am hand fertilizing her lawn and using old school sprinkler...
I need to get her actual system working, she has one but isn't sure what's wrong with it.

She noticed how green the neighbor's grass was the other day...she's like, cool...I'll just re-sod! I said, uh...if you don't water or fertilize it'll look just like it does now in a year.

I honestly don't know what kind of sod. Nice sod? It's green and luscious. That's all I know. I remember them telling me the seed mixture, but I really can't recall. I want to say Kentucky Bluegrass, but don't quote me on that.

All I had surrounding my house was clay. No removal or anything. No irrigation system.. people have them here, but they're not overly common.

I'm like Yumcha, though- I'm not a big fan of lots of grass. I'm looking to rip more of it out this year and make more tree beds in the front yard. For the backyard, I was supposed to rip out a bunch and put down a pathway and a big circle for a fire pit, but I don't know if it's in the budget for this year anymore. Lots of other higher priority items to deal with. I like having grass as a more of a feature, instead of the main aspect. It's obviously not overly economical to do so, so it's a bit of a balancing act. We have a corner lot and because of that, there's a 6ft grass boulevard, the length of the entire property that I had to sod. It sucks because it's not my land (belongs to the city), but I'm expected to landscape it and maintain it. No point fighting it- it's an unwinnable battle, but because of that, we are keeping it plain.

Maybe it's just the prevalence of football and astroturf here..
Although pricey for you might just be the same price here.
I remember it was about the same price as getting sod installed for me.

I looked into it... thought it would be awesome to have green "grass" all year round, and not worry about the dog burning the grass whenever he's in the back. But it's like $3.50-5.50/sqft for the stuff. Hard to justify if sod is less than 10% of that. I still want to do a putting green in the back out of turf, but that likely won't happen this year either.
