He's a lamefish getting railed by some hillbillies right about now.. line around the barn, up the dirt road, all the way out to the gas station by the town's only traffic light.

Use him for just a valve adjustment? At that point, you might as well do the timing belt also. You have to disassemble half the engine to do either job. No point in sealing it all back up and then paying another shop to take it apart again

see and thats my issue,

i figure ok you are going to have half the engine apart already, can you go ahead and replace the oil pump seal for a $2 part and maybe 1 hour extra labor, and shops are like nope, even though they have to strip it down just the same for the water pump as for the oil pump....grrr.

maybe you need to find a new shop that IS willing to do that, it's not an unreasonable request and you're not asking for it for free.

They're not really related. The only part of the valve adjustment that ties into the timing belt job is the spark plugs.

again.. seal isn't related.
Maybe popping the crank pulley off gives them a bit more clearance, but it really doesn't take much time off of it.
also.. they should be charging 0.5 hours to do the seal.

unless you're a retard and it takes you 3 tries and 2 days to get the valve seal done properly.

Ulster.. you can do both, just need the right set of tools and the right mindset.
Working on cars is just a battle of patience. Many frustrations go with the territory, you just need to be able to separate from them and soldier through it.
Right tools makes a big difference. You could honestly knock out the timing belt in 4-6 hours and valve adjustment in 2-3 hours.
Any extra time is filled with cleaning shit up, blowing off steam, swearing, being lazy, self-doubt, and generally being a pussy.

honestly, if I were doing it again, I'd do the valve adjustment at the same time although overall since it was my first time on either...it felt daunting.
but removing intake and valve covers made it so much easier to get to the spark plugs etc too...

i didn't have a kid and could drive the S2000 to work so that took all the stress out of the equation.

how they not related? everywhere i read when it comes to either resealing or replacing the oil pump they mention going through the same steps as the TB replacement, i got a quote from the stealership who "found" the oil leak of $1617.66 to "Reseal/Build Oil Pump"

no, but getting down to them... remove intake manifold, etc... no point to pay twice for it.

It's my experience that it's not really the oil pump leaking.. if it really was the oil pump, then yes, they shouldn't stack hours on you
Most leaks are from the vtec solenoid gasket or relating solenoid o-rings.. depending on miles.. next leak point is the crankshaft gasket.
Last is the oil pump. Easiest thing you can do is clean everything down with brake spray and then dust it down with athlete's foot spray or some form of powder.
Run the car on blocks and see if you can pinpoint the leak.

You definitely don't need to remove the IM to remove plugs.

A minor leak is not a biggie.. as long as it's not getting slung on the timing belt. It keeps everything moist.. Mmmm..
Look ma! No rust!

Now if you do long OCIs and have a leak.. well.. maybe do conservative OCI instead.

that was my first concern, the first time.
I tried to be a cool mechanic with tips and tricks and instead of taking off the TB covers, I finessed them out. only thing is, it damaged the covers.
so, the oil leak would fling upwards and I was super scared that it would get into the TB area. make the belt slip, then damage the engine...

but I did that anyway.

on my birthday, i decided to troubleshoot the leak
forgot to install something, and BOOM

because the leak only happened with pressure. only when the car was on, it leaked. so i went to go look for leak.
but forgot to installl the crank pulley pin
went to start her up, and at that EXACT moment, I knew I fucked up
