I called an independent shop to get a quote for timing belt and water pump service, and he quoted $1150 CAD pre-tax for the tb, water pump, serpentine belt, and thermostat. Is that a good deal?
I went ahead and did the conversion to USD for those in the US and it comes out to around $800.
I looked up the parts on RockAuto and it came out to about $343 CAD (240 USD) for the AISIN tb kit, GATES belt kit, and thermostat. Which comes out to about $800 CAD in labor or $500 USD. Should I schedule an appointment or keep shopping around?

Lowest priced mechanic = worst quality parts and worst quality of work.
Any independent will be a huge cost savings over a dealership, so you might as well get a good one. Get some local recommendations.
Or... even with factoring in the cost of buying a set of tools DIY is still the super cheapest route. But how is YOUR quality of work?
