Calling it legal is a bit of a sham.
there are crazy regulations around it. Each house can only grow four plants. You can still only carry a certain amount on you (which is bullshit, because I can load a semi truck full of cigarettes and booze and no one from the law would look twice). Then municipalities each get to make their own rules as to where you can smoke. They are treating it like cigarettes, but 10 times worse. Some places don’t let you smoke outside your house. Like wtf.
Driving impairment charges are crazy. Instant 90 day licence suspension in Alberta if they believe you are under the influence (no solid testing methods currently exist). They fail to realize how many people drive stoned every day. It’s nothing like alcohol. I don’t doubt it may slow your reaction time, but you’re probably also driving 10km/h under the limit. Pot makes you feel anxiety... you don’t want to drive like an asshole. Alcohol makes you feel like superman and end up driving beyond your means and crash and die.
Of all all the people I know, I’d say the majority smoke. And drive. None of them drink and drive. I can’t think of anyone who’s been in a collision while smoking. And I don’t mean once in awhile. I mean day in, day out, sometimes multiple times a day. Zero accidents. Go figure.
The belief is the rules are super stringent now, but will be relaxed over time. Makes sense, as the people who make the laws likely have never smoked once in their life. They treat it like they’re legalizing heroine.

I do not classify weed in the same segment as booze. Alcohol has more of a place in society that is deeply ingrained. People drink socially. Alcohol is served in formal and informal events/gatherings. I just don't see weed integrating itself as deeply as alcohol at all. I may have (maybeeeeee) partaken in the vegetable in the past but seriously, I just don't see myself (nor the social circles I am in regularly) go and buy oodles of the stuff to serve in parties, engagements...
REGULAR weed smokers will now have obviously legit ways to obtain it but otherwise, I just don't see a huge influx of consumers? Those who don't smoke it regularly aren't going to start and integrate it into their lifestyle. Alcohol is different in that way.
Don’t worry, little cha will be smoking soon enough. Regardless what you say.

I don't think you realize how many people already smoke.

There will be new smokers also. Likely the younger crowds though. Old school people will still treat it as evil.

But, that's the thing, let's go with what YOU know and what I know...so, you have your social circle and acquaintances who you know smoke. I have mine and in mine, I can count 3 people out of the crew that are regular smokers. In our convos, with the ones who I know do not, we had all wondered the same thing: Are you planning to pick some up and keep it around? Answer: Nope. It's like vaping...it's supposedly safer when it first came out and supposedly, hip and happening and has no ill effects compared to cigarette (so, try it!!), no one I knew started. No new entrants.
I just think cannabis will be somewhat like that...the demand may not be as high as projected. Dunno. I could be completely wrong about this and be crying 8 years from now when people are laughing to the bank.

The youth on the other hand? I bet many more will try it now. Only some (more) or them will start smoking.
It's not like vaping at all. Vaping is a substitute. You don't smoke weed because you're trying to avoid tobacco. You smoke it for one of two reasons- medical (heavy CBD content), or recreational (high THC content) because you want to get high. People like getting fucked up. That's why drugs and alcohol exist.
There's an emerging market that will unfold. I don't expect non smokers to jump on the bandwagon and start smoking, if they never did before. But there are those who enjoy it but fear the law. This now takes the burden off their shoulders.
Hell, beer conglomerates are looking at THC infused drinks. Coca cola was rumoured about doing the same. If mega corporations are jumping onboard, there must be a market. How many huge corporations did you see jump on the vaping bandwagon? I can't think of any.

We are also talking about small groups of people. What's your circle? 20-30 people, at max? Is mine any different? That doesn't really point to the bigger picture.
Hey, do as you please. Eventually it'll be just as common as booze. There will be smoking lounges eventually . Even Edmonton council is considering allowing them, even though smoking is banned indoors.

Additionally (assuming it's the same in .ca as here) it's not just smoking... Edibles are another method which is much more attractive to those who want the health benefits without the hazards of smoking/vaping.

Also Yumcha, there might already be smokers in your group that no one even knows about. Lots of closet smokers that don’t want to deal with the stigmas, or whatever else. I personally was made aware of about 5 people at my last place of work that were regular smokers. I had no clue. Seemed like a typical family mom, always taking care of business. I would have never suspected.

Finally got the plan put together last night. Going to look everything over tonight, again. Start Saturday. Maybe Sunday. Ill let him decide. My old man seems to be onboard thus far. He’s been big his entire adult life, but he’s always wanted to get back down... he just wasn’t willing to spend the money on stuff like a nutritionist. Nor did he have the knowledge on how to do it without suffering.
Mama Bear is the type to trust everything she comes across the Internet. Bless her heart. She’s trying. She finds these random ass fad diets, or detoxes, or lavender oil, that never work. She wasn’t the best guide for him. But she tries.
