Yeah, there's always a breakover point where the cost/benefit analysis doesn't pan out.

My first job was like that... I'd been there a while and asked what I needed to do to get promoted to the next title. They said the only way to get more money was to take on more responsibility, or quit and take a job with higher pay.
So I found a new job with higher pay and turned in my 2 weeks.
A few days later they'd processed my promotion and pay increase.
So I thanked them, called my new employer and mentioned I'd just gotten a promotion and would they like to offer me more money. And they did.
So I followed through with quitting the first job as planned, but got even more even more money.
Worked out well.
I can only imagine what the workforce would be like if companies showed appreciation to their employees proactively instead of reactively when it doesn't help.

Side story is that I got laid off from that new job within 9 months. But even that worked out well.
