Well so much for that. Now that everything is broken in, I can clearly hear the odd sound at idle just like whats heard in Honda's video. Guess I'm going back in and adding that shim after all.

Fuckkkk, really?

NFN...you got in my head. Found a deal on amazon...$300, for the ingersoll rand. Case, battery and tool...

I was tempted to save some bucks and go with the makita, but $190 with no battery and only 325 ft/lb didn't make sense to me.

Bought the rubber condom to put over it too...and a set of torque sticks. Wheel rotations and all the other fuckery I'm constantly doing it will be easy!

Majofo, I'd like to say thank you for the great guide!!!

I finally completed the Timing Belt/Water pump 105k maintenance this weekend!! Your guide walked me through each step on completing this and made it a successful weekend!

I started Saturday afternoon and ran into the issue with the crankshaft bolt, it wouldn't budge because my air compressor at home was too weak even with the Lisle socket so I called it a night when it got too late and this Sunday afternoon my brother tried heating the bolt up and he was able to crack it loose. After that, it was a breeze completing it! I took my time with everything so spent the whole weekend working on it and now she's running great!

I bought my TL with 102k miles 2 years ago, ordered the TB/WP Kit a few months after owning the car but stalled on doing this for 17k miles because I was lazy But finally getting this done is a relief! Now I don't have to worry about it anymore!

How much did you guys spend on the whole kit? I know it must be written somewhere in the thread but 50 pages, hope you understand. Thank you.

I bought my OEM Aisin kit from RockAuto.com - It's listed at $174.49 - Click here for AISIN TKH002 In the picture it shows the gasket for the water pump separate but it's actually on the pump so you won't have to worry about it falling off when installing it.

I got the kit about 2 years ago right when I bought my TL and had it sitting around but I'm sure the price was the same and my TL had all Aisin parts in there too before I replaced them all.

I got quoted like $275 for this kit. Unbelievable. What's the difference with this kit and the one manufactured by Gates?

Same here, my kit came from Amazon AISIN with Mitsuboshi. Id also suggest getting new:
-Serp belt and tens/idler pulley.

-PS hose gasket not on the DIY but a lot easier to work with PS pump removed.

--Timing Belt idler and tensioner bolts or cover them with high temp red thread locker. The idler (I believe) is very hard to get a torque wrench on and mine was backing out. The oil leak came at the right time I guess.

Bolt backed out about 1/4"

I did the oil pump gasket at the same time and wound up going overboard buying new bolts, but better to spend $50 on new bolts than break one off in the TB area

After taking a look underneath the hood after a long time, a buddy of mine noticed that the serpentine belt has some cracks. Any chance there's a kit which includes that (I highly doubt it, but worth a try).

Kits probably won't have those. Acuraoemparts.com or NAPA. NAPA's premium is the same is OEM.

Was the quote from a dealership? As for the Gates kit, I heard that the water pump eventually goes bad even before the next 105k swap.

I was going to swap out for a new serp belt too but the one I have on there which is Napa is still in good condition, no cracks so I re-used it.

@ekrekel - How many miles did you have on your TL before the TB kit swap? My parts were dry as bone but good thing you swapped your's out especially with that bolt coming loose like that.

Holy shit...that bolt backing out is scary!

go oem on that serpentine belt for sure...mine is getting loud on my base TL. I bought a gatorback...unless of course, it's the stupid tensioner again.

This is 2nd TB change 192k, first was at 105k. It was prompted by the oil pump gasket leak. I did the original and apparently didn't get enough on that hard to torque bolt hence the hi temp thread locker red advice. The OEM idler bolt comes with Honda red thread locker pre applied, I took that as license to coat the tensioner bolt. I can't believe the auto tensioner pin didn't slip off the tensioner bracket.

The first Gates pump ran 110K for me, no issues. Looked fine when I pulled it for my 2nd TB change. The second Gates pump has been on for ~15K and no issues.

My 1st Gates pump went bad at less than 50k. There won't be a second.

BTW: Depending on the year, the OEM serpentine belt is made by Mitsuboshi. You can get them in a Mitsuboshi box for less. Some of years were made by Bando. Check your specific year on OEMAcuraParts.com. The belt can be found in the AC Compressor section....

Ah, well, if you haven't yet made the purchase, I would probably now go with the DeWalt DCF899P1 for $300:

I appreciate it, man...I'll look into it. I'd be getting the snap-on for a comparable price. Odd that nobody barely even compares or reviews the snap-on.

There are a few utube vids. It will pop a crank bolt, but the other 3 guns in that video I posted earlier are more powerful.... That extra power may be overkill for what you need, dunno.

I keep thinking about the makita...325 ft/lb...cheaper and good enough for lug nuts. Although when it comes time to do the timing belt job in the next decade I may be mad I didn't spend the extra money. If it wasn't for that crank pulley...it would be overkill for about 99% of the work I ever do.

Two guys? I break free the crank bolt in under 5 minutes by myself with hand tools. No need to buy an overpowered gun when yourself is plenty strong.

NFN
that's what gets me...there's no real direct comparison except the one on that torque measuring thingy...supposedly all the comparison vids of the snapon ct8850 were removed because it blew them away.

The Dewalt is on sale prime amazon...might give it a shot.
I'm still tempted to see how the makita works...only 325 ft lb though...which sucks...and I'm not sure it'll work with my thin batteries that i use for everything else.

Where did you hear that? I can't believe that's true because the CT8850 is only spec'd at 600 ft/lbs.

Heck, the Makita along with a Lisle socket might do just fine on a crank bolt....or it might not....For most anything else, the Makita alone should be fine.

I think he's talking about the tensioner & idler for the serpentine belt......not the timing belt.

I wouldn't expect that for that price, I remember paying $140 for that alone.

NFN...a friend that works for Snap-On but that I trust. He said that the guns are underrated...there's not a lot of videos on it although there's one guy in a junkyard doing a bunch of honda CP bolts in a row with it. Assuming it ain't doctored...

What I LOVE about that DeWalt is that it has power settings so you don't have to think too much about it when doing lug nuts etc. The immediate stop doesn't bother me...and I like the brushless.

You're right, the Aisin kit includes the tensioner/idler pulley for the timing belt portion but not for the serp belt.

It's possible to get to the tensioner pulley anchoring bolt with a torque wrench, you just need a dog bone extension. I have a set that's 2" in length of various metric sizes.

Very strange. The torque spec for that bolt is only 19 ft-lbs. Hard for me to believe you didn't get at least 19 ft-lbs on the bolt...

I've done 2 TB changes now and that bolt hasn't ever been an issue. I wonder if the threads are messed up or something?

so, I am ready to assemble the timing belt kit for my 06 TL and I have several questions.

Someone shared this EBAY KIT for $305.

Aisin kit + Bando serpentine belt from Rackauto comes up to $190. Should I be concerned about quality of the Rackauto timing belt kit vs Honda OEM? Is it worth it to spend over $100 to get Honda OEM timing belt kit?

Also, some people mentioned that it also makes sense replace tensioner/idler pulley for serpentine belt and power steering hose gasket. Can someone please share the Honda part numbers or Rackauto links/part numbers for these two parts?

I appreciate any info.

Thanks

I've used this kit twice. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008E...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The Honda stamp on the WP is the only difference AISIN. KOYO pulley and identical tensioner. You probably don't need the cam or crank seals. I wouldn't have been able to replace the crank seal if I didn't have to take the oil pump off due to the dreaded oil pump gasket leak.
