Tire Vandalism
Tire Vandalism
Some A-hole went around our neighborhood slashing tires and they hit both of our cars, and all of my neighbors whose cars were outside last night. The one night I left mine outside...
So I got new shoes for the Blackbird. Continental Extreme Contact DWS-06 size 255/40/19. They look and perform great! Very quiet, better ride than the OEM Michelin and speedometer is fractionally different. 60 mph is really 60.7 mph now.

Local tire dealer sales promotion. Seriously, sorry to hear about this unfortunate incident. Enjoy your new shoes.
My father always told me "...son, you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes."

And so it goes, RLX-Sport Hybrid. Sorry for another hit to your car, your time, and your wallet. You have the damnedest luck.

My neighborhood was the target, not me. We had a bad situation earlier this year where a couple of dozen school buses and other county vehicles had their tires slashed, windows broken, graffiti inside as well as out, and lots of baby powder was sprinkled all over the inside. They never caught the perp who did that, but they think last night might be connected to it. It was only $1,135 for the new shoes so I'm not too upset about it. I did not like the OEM rubber anyway. My new MDX is still at the shop now getting its tires on it. It is probably not worth an insurance claim unless it is covered under my homeowners since they were parked on the property. I have a $5,000 deductible on the house, so the total is well under that for both cars. Bummer.
I have had Contis before and thought they were terrific then too. I hope I made a good choice.

Sorry about the tires.
I would appreciate your comparisons to the OEM Michelins after you drive them a bit more.
I have been researching a replacement GT tire for a quieter ride on coarse roads and less tire thud / impact noise.
The Contis are on my list. Another is the Pirelli Cinturato P7. Even higher ratings. Both less than the Michelins.
The best comparisons are how they perform on a particular car, so I am eager to get data.

RLX-Sport Hybrid, sorry to hear about the damage to your car. Unfortunately, the more people there are in the world... the more a-holes there are. I hope they catch the culprit and make him clean out port-a-potties for a decade as punishment.
Do report back on the Conti's as they age.

I forgot to mention that the DWS handle light snow reasonably well. They are obviously not snow tires but I've been pleased with their performance. They have good hydroplaning resistance. I think you'll like them.
Very upsetting to hear this sort of thing! I am sorry it happened to you RLX-Sport Hybrid:-(
Excellent choice on the all season tires, since you do not use dedicated winter tires! When i decide to change out the OEMs i will be putting the Michelin Pilot Super Sports.....I had them on my 2012 TL SH-AWD, and my TSX Sport Wagon.....i loved them! Very quite, very grippy, excellent hydroplaning resistance, but not good for any temperature under 45 degrees.

It should be covered under the comprehensive portion of your auto insurance. If you did your insurance right, then you selected a $100 deductible for the comp and a $1000 for the Collision. For me, going from a $500 to a $100 deductible on comp was a $26 difference every year. If nothing bad happens, I figure that I'll get a windshield chip every 5 years or so, so $130 for the extra payments plus $100 deductible gets me a new windshield - the $500 deductible would cost me more money.
So after driving approximately 100 miles this evening, I can report some initial impressions. If the OEM Michelin tires are hard sole shoes, the Contis are like sneakers. The ride is instantly more supple over the minor bumps and cracks in the roads. Larger pot holes have less impact transmitted through the suspension because of the softer sidewalls. I experimented and lowered the air pressure to 36 psi front and 34 psi rear, and that made it even better (normally I run 38 psi front and 35 psi rear). Sound quality is much improved. It was chilly this evening and traction was not a problem at all. The suspension feels much improved so if you are complaining of a harsh ride, switching to these tires will absolutely improve things markedly. The 255/40/19 size also look great as it give a bad ass more muscular look too.
Softer sidewalls often lead to increased rolling resistance and poorer mileage (even more so with the wider tires you have chosen). Please report back if you notice a significant change on that front. I for one would sacrifice a bit of mileage for an even quieter, smoother ride.

I'd also like to know your impression of cornering...although not everyone probably drives as spiritedly, I immediately noticed a very soft cornering with my last set of Kumhos.
At this point I would say that cornering is not negatively affected by the softer sidewalls. The Sport Hybrid is a tightly sprung vehicle to start with and generally displays exceptionally flat cornering abilities. Visually in everyday driving there is truly no difference regarding how much the car leans into a turn when I look over the hood relative to the road surface with the new tires. It is a marked improvement in ride for sure which is a pleasure. The sound level is also noticeably quieter than the OEM Michelin tires. I will likely never be on a track with the car so that is where one might feel differently, but for road use it is a winner so far. I would strongly recommend anyone who is using the OEM rubber and not liking the ride to replace them with these.

Well, remember you're going from a set of tires that likely had a few thousand miles on them over to a brand new set...you'd be surprised how much you get used to a poor ride and only realize it once you get new tires. It might be more about new tires than the new brand.
About cornering...I know the RLX is a cut above and all but I can guarantee it doesn't corner more flat than my acura accord that has suspension, upgraded sway bars and strut bars. I would guess based on your response that you likely don't push it the way I do if you notice a much more compliant/smooth ride but felt NO loss of cornering ability. Try slaloming back and forth or taking a cloverleaf at a speed that's near traction breaking speeds. That's more where I was disappointed. I appreciate the response.

I would second that a trade off on mpg for more comfort and quite. Knowing the Michelins are low rolling resistance coupled with low profile, I think they do OK. But I would invest on improving on them.

UPDATE:
A neighbor up the street caught the perp on his surveillance video and turned the data over to the State Police. They were able to identify the person as a high school student from our school district! It is all over the local Facebook threads locally so my wife says. Other parents are blasting his parents for not having control over him. Apparently he did this not just in our neighborhood but other ones too over the last 48 hours. He even hit his own parents cars just to throw anyone off the trail that it might be him. Also he was caught on other surveillance cameras that other people have on their property. What a stupid person.

So in this short a period of time they got to see some obscure security camera footage AND figure out who it was and catch the kid? Damn, I hope they lock him up in prison. Too bad his parents didn't buy an RLX.
Let me know if my retort to your cornering post needs clarification.

Surveillance systems are cheap and plentiful these days, and almost everybody has Internet good enough for remote surveillance and iCloud storage.
Even if you break into the house, you can no longer be sure that you'll be able to destroy the record.
Considering what you get, they're really quite cheap.

But, then, I don't like the tires he bought, either.
:runs away quickly:
I contacted my agent and I have a $500 deductible on my comprehensive coverage. I filed a claim and submitted my receipts for both cars. I was told they will cut a check fairly quickly to reimburse the costs. Thank you for the tip! So for $500 I got new tires all around (not that I needed it for the new MDX since it has about 3,000 miles on it).
Anyway I imagine to replace all of those tires has to be really expensive. At least they caught the kid. My wife called me just a few minutes ago to say that the punk was escorted out of school this morning by the police. I wonder if they will be able to link him to the school bus vandalism incident? Oh well, this is water under the bridge. Not a terrible thing. I didn't particularly like the OEM tires that much.
Could you please let us know what tires you do like, and why? My favorite ones are the Michelin Pilot Super Sports, but i also have have dedicated winter wheels and tires.
I would greatly appreciate it!
Thank you George.

Where did this happen? Surely there's a news story on it, especially since they caught the kid.
I just bought some Michelin PSS too! Can't wait to try them out. Wonder how they'll corner.

I'm sure there will be something in the local media but this is not important enough to make a regional reports, or at least it shouldn't. There are far more important items to report on. Things like sex, drugs, death and racism is what the media focus on, not petty vandalism. This is just an inconvenience and insurance claims for people. Nobody was hurt that I am aware of. Just a stupid kid looking for attention probably. The tire stores must be happy.
^^^Agreed on the above posts
When I'm buying my home in the future I will most DEFINITELY put in a high quality surveillance camera system for unfortunate events and other things like this.
Another tidbit to remember for home buying/shopping.
Hope the kid and parents have this resolved and they get better/get amends. I had assumed this may be one of those "its just a prank bro!" d bags.

You also stated earlier it was posted all over facebook, yet you can't even provide a link to any single story? I'm not saying this didn't happen, but searching through Facebook, I was able to find countless stories of tire slashing across the US. I had stories come up from 2009, thousands of miles away from me, yet I see nothing come up regarding March 1st (which is the date you indicated this happened on).
Again, I'm not saying this didn't happen... but I'm sure you can see why people would be a little skeptical. Either way, I hope you enjoy the new tires. OEM tires are always a compromise, at best.
I'm not on Facebook. I don't know how many cars were hit by this punk. I don't know how much the damages are. I'm not looking for stories on the web for it. I'm sure something will be there eventually but who cares? Since you have now arrived Taco, and from your signature you apparently are a fan of me for some reason, we can consider this thread complete then. There is nothing left to report.

Pretty sure you don't have the authority to lock a thread because you don't like a member.
Judging from your use of the "thanks" button you were just looking for people to tell you everything is gonna be alright and then give you kudos for your awesome new tires? Or am I totally misreading that?

Just to add my two cents:
I am going to put Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 Plus tires on once my original (oem) tires wear out.
I had the Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires on my previous car (my old RL) and they were great !
The pilot sport 3 Plus tires are supposed to have better snow traction than the pilot sport 3
(btw, fyi for those who don't know A/S stands for All-Season tires)
