Extended Warranty Considerations

I bought my 2019 RDX in June, 2018, so the factory warranty except for the powertrain is up soon. In trying to assess extended warranty premiums vs risk vs impact ($) of a major repair, I find myself going back and forth on the decision. In the past I have never gone with one on less expensive vehicles, but I have a feeling that a couple significant repairs could offset the premium cost. eg. computer systems, infotainment systems. This is the first year of a new design, which one would think could up the risk a bit. Premiums for roughly the 5-7 year range seem to cost about $2K or so in very round figures. Anyone have any comments on this decision with comparable vehicles?

What is the current mileage ?

Do you really plan on keeping the vehicle for 5-7 years?

Are you considering Acura extended warranty or an aftermarket policy ? Are there deductibles and exclusion list of items not covered or inclusion list of covered items ?

Assuming maintenance items like oil, filters, tires, brakes, battery are NOT covered ?

Power train are the high cost items that are already in coverage and will be to XXX months and miles.

A few months after we bought our new 2019 RDX, we decided to get an Acura extended warranty. It was the D80 plan, which is 8 years, 100K miles. We paid $1695 for it. The Reno dealer wanted quite a bit more as I recall, but we found another dealer online (Florida maybe) who offered us the $1,695 price, so Reno matched it. As it is turning out, only the 8 year part will matter to us (vs the miles), as we rarely drive the car (3 years 7months and 13,000 miles so far), so in essence doubling the original warranty years. No deductibles, it's basically the original warranty doubled. We tend to keep cars 10 plus years. Whether this pans out or not, who knows, but with the slew of electronics, etc. and the expense associated, it seemed worth the gamble. With Acuras extended warranty you also keep the roadside assistance until the end, get rental car reimbursement for up to 6 days, trip interruption benefit (meals, hotel), concierge services which includes a bunch of stuff. So for about $1 a day for the 4 years after the standard warranty....we'll see what happens. I had never bought a car extended warranty before except for our daughters Mazda CX when she turned 16. In that case, that warranty payed off big time.

We usually get an extended warranty on new cars. The only one that didn't pay for itself was for our 2014 RDX because it never needed anything fixed (well, also for our 2008 CR-V but we traded it before the end of the extended warranty and got most of the cost refunded because we hadn't used it). Having said that, I plan to get one for our 2021 mostly because of all the electronic stuff that I'd imagine would be pretty expensive to replace.

I have a 2019 bought in Oct 2018 and just recently got a G38 (this is an Acura Care plan) which is 3 year/80,000 miles (3 years started at time of purchase, so it extends the original warranty which would have ended in October by about 2.5 years). I'm only at 33k miles, so mileage was irrelevant and that was the lowest mileage available for the 3 year one. It is refundable on a pro-rated basis if I sell the car before then. I paid only $1150 which I think is an excellent value considering $0 deductible. I am used to paying $2500 for BMW extended warranties with $100 deductible. Too much electronics and I have had a ton of stuff go wrong with mine so far, including a recent issue with the transmission, so I don't want to take any chances. Although, I think the transmission would be covered by Acura's powertrain warranty which is 6 yr/70k. I bought it from Curry Acura (curryacuracare.com) -- simple, no hassle pricing.

I have an Acura RDX 2020. Bought the car in Sept 2019. I have around another year of bumper-to-bumper warranty left. I drive less than 8k mile a year so I'm looking at this:

F58 - 5 years/80k miles (5 years start when I purchase) - $1025 quote from Saccuci. Curry Acura wanted $1125.

No issues with my Acura so far. I know the engine will last me forever, since it's a Honda. However, I do worry about all the electronics. I'm planning to keep this car until it dies or the 2nd iteration of an electric RDX is out.

With parts/labor shortage, I think one minor issue will easy cost $1000. The value of the RDX actually went up. I bought the car ~$40k OOTD in 2019, now it's ~$40k CPO for a 2020 RDX. I don't foresee car prices dropping anytime soon.

The supply chain issue has made the risk assessment of the extended warranty worth more. What's everyone's opinion and thoughts?

^ Check the exclusions. I don’t think the infotainment is covered. Powertrain already has a longer warranty, I think. Regardless I’m in a similar situation and got a 3 year/80k extended warranty about 6 months ago just because I’ve had 10+ warranty issues with this car already. In the mean time I’m doing my best to get into a Lexus NX but finding a 350h in my color choices/trim is proving very hard. I suspect it could take several months to a year as it has for several folks in the Lexus forums.

I looked at the NX Hybrid also. However, I don't drive enough to make the gas savings worth it. I notice you live in CaliTaxifornia also. We don't get credit for TTL trade in, so we'll have to pay another ~$4k in taxes/fees if we change cars. That's -$4k in sunken costs. It looks like the chip shortage isn't going to get fixed for another 2 - 3 years per: https://www.reddit.com/r/askcarsales..._mazda_raises/

I'm not sure if dealer mark-up is going away anytime soon too.

Your @anoop story has nudge me further towards the extended warranty. I'll probably buy it now due to your experience and story. I'm not in the mood to pay additional taxes or pay for 10+ warranty issues out of pocket.

I'll buy the extended warranty end of this month to get the extra 20 days. Same price if you buy it beginning of month vs end of month, but extended warranty ends 5 years from date of purchase.

The issue is should I buy the extended warranty from my dealership or from Saccuci.
Saccuci- $1025, no tax
My Dealer - $1200 plus $100 in tax

That's the lowest my dealer can go, since they state their policy is ~$300 profit margin minimum policy. The issue is that my dealership treats me really nice. They aren't cheap or hesitant with the loaner car.

I figured if I bought my car there, get my maintenance done there, I might as well get my warranty there for the $275 difference (after tax). This way if I do need warranty help one day, they'll take into consideration my financial long term relationship with them.

I don’t think finance and service are connected.

I don't think I have ever seen a state charge sales tax on a warranty... that's a special place!.
