Engine Airfilter/Cabin Air Filter intervals

Hi Everyone,

Around what intervals does the "2" code pop up on the MID? I currently have 22k miles and my oil percentage is at 20%. I thought for sure it would have thrown the "2" code, but it's only showing a 1. At what mileage do these typically need to be replaced?

Of course, the dealer will tell me they're dirty when I take the car in for an oil change, but I'm thinking they are ok if the code hasn't popped up yet. Good or bad thinking?

Thanks, everyone!

Just pull them out and check them out and see. I bought a reusable K&N air filter, which has been great to use and cost effective.

I change both every 10k, they're cheap and easy to replace

Back when they printed maintenance schedules, MDX said 30k miles. Obviously this would be less if you drive in dusty conditions.

The "2" code showed up on my wife's RDX at ~24,800 miles when oil life showed 50%. When I replaced her engine filter at 28888 miles, it was "somewhat dirty." It could have easily served for 40k+ miles. I made a notation that a 25k-30k mile interval seems appropriate for conditions in which we drive the RDX. It is too much bother to open up just to inspect (not much bother, but too much) . If I open it, I'm replacing the filter and adjusting interval for the next time. I used a factory filter, which was similar in price and I was already ordering other parts from an Acura dealer in Arizona.

The cabin air filter can be inspected in a couple of minutes, maybe less. I'll probably replace that on 20k mile (~2 year) interval, regardless of pristine appearance if it is a type with carbon in it. I used aftermarket for the cabin filter.

With you living in desert conditions you should really change engine filter much much sooner

I don't live in desert conditions. No benefit in changing filters that don't need it.

I think the code pops up based on mileage. There are exceptions when driving in dusty conditions. See exceptions in the attached.

Otherwise, I think normal is oil filter every 15k and air filters every 30k.

In my case, I asked the dealer to check all of them at every service and they said it's fine when the code didn't show.

Honestly, it's easy enough to just pull both and check them. Would be the better method since relying on the computer for that won't always fit every scenario or geographical location.

On the older K20 and K24, the service table* calls for engine air filter replacement every 15k.

*Severe service table, but in reality most people should be following this and not the "normal" service table.

it all depends on driving conditions, in some cases you need to change it every 10k miles and in some 30k. If in doubt, always should check condition.

Dealerships are notorious for lying and pushing filter replacements much sooner than necessary. Little dirt on filter is not a reason to replace it.

I'm in the Phoenix area. I change my cabin filter and clean my engine filter (K&N) every ~25k (basically every 3rd oil change on my '22). I did the same on my '10 RDX for the 12 years I had that one, and between the two cars the filters always looked dirty enough to change, but good enough to keep going if needed - which to me is exactly when I want to change them.

If you are more concerned about the filter catching contaminants than you are about adding maybe 5-6 horsepower when at full throttle, you might want to rethink than K&N filter. It lets through a lot of particles.
