Filter question

I have about 21K miles on my 06 RL and just recently finished my 3rd maintenance. I haven't been asked to change out the air/cabin filters yet. When are you guys getting the code change the filters? Thinking maybe I should just change it out anyway since I've had the car for 19 months and it's probably filthy by now.

I have not received the MID code that includes the cabin filter replacement. My RL is an 06 with 17K miles.

I decided to change the CAF @ 15K miles after I found them on Ebay for $11 and I bought 2.

I have to say, even though the MID had not yet indicated a CAF change, I was very surprised to see how dirty the OEM filter was. It is a snap to replace (Search).

I think you should search for the CAF and keep a spare on hand. Changing it yourself will not only save you the silly charge the dealer will invoice you ($40+), but also offer you a cleaner cabin air flow as you need.

It is supposed to be 2 code that triggers the change. Have you changed the engine air cleaner yet?

I changed mine after a year, even though it did not call for it, and it was not that dirty, even after the horrendous pollen filled spring we had here in the mid Atlantic.

See the thread to see how dirty it was:
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...t=cabin+filter

The 2 code in the maintenance minder says:

-Replace air cleaner element. If you drive in dusty conditions, replace every 15,000
miles (24,000 km).
-Replace dust and pollen filter. If you drive primarily in urban areas that have high
concentrations of soot in the air from industry and from diesel-powered vehicles, replace every 15,000 miles (24,000 km).
-Inspect drive belt

I have both filters on hand and would change it myself, but was going to wait until the MID tells me. But I think I'll just change it and not wait for a Code 2. Thanks.

The local dealer here lumps in the cabin air filter change with the "30,000" mile service - for some reason they won't follow the MID maintenance schedules and still insist on performing mileage-based services. When I had the 2005 RL they quoted me an outrageous price for a 30,000 mile service - it was more than $400. When I had them break it down, part of it was for the cabin air filter change. I informed them that I had just chnaged it and they knocked something like $110 off the service quote. The cabin air filter is one of the biggest profit items for a service department. It's a 5 minute job in the RL and requires no tools.

chas2, when you say "dust and pollen filter", are you referring to the engine air filter?

Is it correct that there are only 2 air filters to worry about - the engine air filter and the cabin air filter?

No, dust and pollen filter is the cabin air filter.

Yes, to my knowledge there are only two air filters to worry about, engine and cabin air filters.

I would just pull it out and examine them. If it look dirty, replace it.

They method I use is to start the car, turn on the fan full speed, open the recirc vents, then spray lysol into the firewall cowl air intakes (by the windshield wipers).

After spraying in the Lysol I select recirc to close the vents, turn off the engine and let it sit overnight. It seems to kill off the mold that causes the nasty smell.

I have read it is best to leave the car with recirc off when parked so the vents can 'breathe' and less mold builds up. I actually have less mold build up if I leave the recirc on (vents closed). It maybe the Florida humidity.

I just did that. Although my car has only 10000 miles, I live in San Diego and with the fires of October the filter was pretty dirty. I changed all of my cars' filters using replacements purchased at Autozone.

Does the MID really show cabin filter replacement intervals?

I am pretty sure the mid will tell you. I like the genuine parts so I use a ebay dealer. Much cheaper then the dealer.

The MID code for Cabin Air Filter is '2'. It also specifies 15K if driving conditions are dusty. I did mine at 15K and it needed it.

Replace air cleaner element
If you drive in dusty conditions, replace every 15,000
miles (24,000 km).
Replace dust and pollen filter
If you drive primarily in urban areas that have high
concentrations of soot in the air from industry and
from diesel-powered vehicles, replace every 15,000
miles (24,000 km).

I finally changed both filters tonight at 22K miles. The cabin filter was totally black, but the air filter wasn't too bad, could have probably waited a little longer for that one. It only took about 30 min to change both including clean up.
I would definitely change the cabin filter at 15K mile interval because that was so easy and would need it.
I saw an ebay seller that sold them for about $11 shipped but can't seem to find him anymore. I think his name is filterman or something like that.

$9.90 + < $3.50 shipping: Buy 3 pcs. and only pay shipping charge for 2 pcs.

My cabin air filter filter just arrived yesterday and took a few minutes to change it.
The OEM filter seems to have charcoal impregnated and the replacement does not have it.

Thanks AsianTL, I ordered from them a couple of days ago. I noticed that the P/N is not the same as the OEM P/N. The size is the same but it's a little different. The P/N this seller offer is OEM P/N for Accord, TL and a few others, the MDX and RL have different P/N.

It will fit correctly, but I am not sure if it will have the same filtering characteristics. Like AsianTL said, the OEM seems to have charcoal impregnated (whatever that means). But if change it out every 15K, I'm sure it'll be ok.
