Windshield replacement
My ugly run with MDX continues ......
On the way back home, a rock flew from somewhere in front on the highway and hit the lower quadrant on the windshield. Courtesy of that rock, there is an ugly chip now that from the looks of it, it is not a repair candidate. Most likely the windshield will need replacement.
I've read horror stories about windshield replacement that it may trigger recalibration work of LKAS. Has anyone done this before? Can I ask insurance to pick the OEM windshield vs a cheaper aftermarket part? Also - the black trim (with little black dots) on the edge the windshield and in the middle where the mirror is attached, is it just trim or do they serve other purpose?
Thank you in advance.

insurance will usually pay for the re-calibration
They did on mine. I had mobile repair company come to house but took into Acura for the calibration

I just had my windshield replaced 3 days ago. I dropped the MDX off at the dealership and everything was taken care of.
I only had to pay the insurance deductible.
Can't even tell that the windshield has been replaced, other than some streaks leftover on the inside of the glass, that I need to clean.

I replaced it like half year ago, my insurance is Geico and I purchased the glass protection, and they were using Safelite's price as standard, let's say if Safelite charged $1000, and dealer charged $1300, Geico will only pay $1000. So I went with Safelite, then I requested OEM windshield, Geico denied, then Safelite requested for OEM windshield because of the Sensor issue, they approved it. After first replacement, water leaks, but all the sensors are working properly, rain sensor wiper, FCW, LKW, so I went in again, they reinstalled the windshield, no more leaking, and they did the recal again. Everything was covered by Geico.

I am going through this right now on my 2017 MDX. At first, I didn't know about OEM glass until I talked to a collegue. I called my insurance company again (Erie) and insisted on OEM glass and was approved. They work with Safelite which will send a mobile service that will replace the windshield and recalibrate the ADAS. Will see how that goes.

I just switched to State Farm and they have glass supplemental insurance of $100 deductible glass replacement if the crack is longer than a $1 bill and free chip repair. I asked them about using OEM glass only and camera calibration because of Acurawatch, my RLX uses a different OEM glass because of the HUD, and they said everything was covered for the $100. It is separate from the regular $500 deductible insurance.
