Windshield replacement : Aftermarket or Honda

I have to replace my windshield due to a huge crack awhile back. I've looked around on the forum but I couldn't seem to find the search button. So sorry if this post is redundant. I've called around and I've gotten two quotes, one from an aftermarket windshield place and one from the Acura dealership. The aftermarket is roughly $200 while the Acura is over $700. Does anybody know the differences between the aftermarket vs. Honda/Acura windshield?

The stock windshield in the TL is a laminate, two pieces of glass with a sound deadening meterial between them. That is why it cracks so easy.

A thick piece of glass will be tougher, but you may get more road noise.

I had safelight fix a 1 inch crack in our windshield, but you hve to get it fixed before it gets big or old.

The search function is under the ACURAZINE logo on the top with a line of other links including HOME, YOUR ACCOUNT, SEARCH, FIND NEW POSTS etc . ..

I've gone the aftermarket route, and have never had a problem.

Note to others - be careful changing wiper blades. I actually cracked a three week old windshield once on the wifey's Odyssey when the wiper arm slammed down after I bumped it!

I was able to hold onto my crown of "King of the Dumb-asses" for another year after that!

Wouldnt your insurance cover the cost of the windshield minus your deductible? If so they should replace it OEM.... OEM is the only way to go.. just my opinion.

Great point. In my case however, I carry a $1,000 deductible to keep my rates down.

$1000 deductible is for collision, not windshield.

My insurance ($500 deductible) is $100 for windshield replacement.

It won’t cost you anything to check with your insurance.

If you can, always go with OEM windshield. Aftermarket windshield is often thinner than the OEM and it causes extra noise and might compromise strength.

Most if not all windshields are made by sandwiching a layer of plastic or similar between 2 layers of glass. It's a federal requirement. The layer of plastic holds the windshield together if for some reason the glass breaks due to impact, so it doesn't easily hurt you.

Check your policy if you have the glass buyback guarantee or something like that. Some states actually require the insurance company to include it. It means you have lower or no deductible if your windshield breaks.
