Does anyone have any ideas for a transparent yellow film to put over my foglights? I want them to appear yellow during daytime, but not make the actual light yellow at night.

 

Is that even logically possible? Wouldn't any film other than clear distort colour output? Pretty curious if something like that exists

No that's not really possible. All you could do is put ultra white bulbs or LEDs and hope it looks white. I had that in my car though and it just ended up looking green at night.

I've been wanting to run a different color at night, specifically these:

But I still like the way they currently appear yellow during daytime.

 

Can anyone recommend a good set of LEDs for our fog lights? I want a white light output so they match our headlights, but don't want to go the HID route since they are so bright.

It blinded people in my old car so I switched it back to halogens

Would LEDs be plug and play as well, or would they need some other thing?

I prefer the Morimoto housings over any bulbs as its a complete LED housing and has a great cutoff line and a great pure white color.

The fog cutoff line is great in that I felt comfortable using the fogs anytime without glaring anyone.

The Philips leds I linked are meant to replace stock halogens and work just like the halogens did. The main difference being they should be white instead of yellow, not sure if they'd be brighter.

 

I cleaned the windows in both my vehicles this weekend. Used Stoner Invisible Glass based on a random recommendation I found in the Detailing forum.

That stuff is incredible!

No one quite impressed upon me how well it actually worked but I'm convinced it's a mixture of unicorn tears and witchcraft based on how easy it goes on and comes off and makes the windows optically clear.

My truck had probably 16 months of haze built up on the inside (except for the little cleaned off porthole to look out of directly in the drivers line of sight ) and it wiped right off with one application. Normally that would take me 2 or 3 cleanings with Windex and newspapers.

With the Stoners, I did two cars with only 2 microfiber cloths and the cleaner spray.

I had never heard of the stuff until a few weeks ago but now I highly recommend it. Found it at Home Depot of all places for only a couple bucks.

So that's my Cool Story Bro.

What are the best products to detail my car with? Any particular methods?

 

You can get lost in the Detailing & Wash section, but there are some good tips/recommendations there.

I have always been a Meguiars fan but recently picked up some Lexol for leather cleaning and conditioning (the 0902 kit from Amazon) that came with some vinyl protector spray too. I also got a bottle of 303 Aerospace for the dash and sun-facing surfaces.

I don't detail nearly as often as I'd like, but when I do it's usually just microfiber towel and water or slightly soapy water to clean the surfaces and then a wipe down with whatever product. So 303A for the dash and door cards, Leather conditioner for the seats, etc. and then a final wipe/dry with a clean microfiber.

 

Depends how deep your wallet is and how it is now/where you want it to be. Most off the shelf Wallyworld stuff is sufficient and convenient if used appropriately. I learned with Meguiar's and moved onto mail order supplies. Most basic is wash, dry, clay, compound, polish, wax/sealant. 90% of your paint defects will happen because of poor washing and drying methods. Claying is often overlooked, but can do wonders to smooth out your car's surface. Compounding and Polish will help remove swirls and scratches, but it won't fix anything your finger nail can dig into. Take your pick of wax or sealant.

Interior is another can of worms.

Lots of articles and opinions that you'll brain will hurt. Just like which oil is better.

Your wrist and arms will probably hurt the day after and you'll want a DA if you plan to detail on an ongoing basis.

you want to clean it best you can. make it smooth and clean.
seal it.
then if needed wax it. ( i usually skip this for the 3 month touch up)


the sealant is the key in that it makes clean up for the next 6 months easy.

 

+1 for the 303 aerospace. i use it on my dash. with the lack of time and space to detail/wash my car. i usually have this mobile guy do it at my work

 

I've been using 303 Aerospace, Lexol leather conditioner, and Chemical Guys innerclean for my interior. I use Meguiars polish and wax but have started experimenting with Collinite wax aswell. Haven't seen or driven my car in like 5 weeks now

 

I use a Griot's Garage 6" DA Polisher with Lake Country Hydro-Tech pads and Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and/or Meguiar's M205. I use the cyan (blue) pad for harsher areas (don't need to use these often anymore... mostly a one-time thing for years to come), tangerine (orange) pad for very minor swirls (once a year or every other year, depending on how well/bad I've maintained the paint), crimson (red) to apply wax (I've yet to invest in a sealant... I know, I really should). I mostly use M205 for maintenance now, but I initially used UC for quicker cutting. The trick is to always start with the least abrasive combination; tangerine + M205 first... if it's not working out, I up the compound to UC. If that's not working out, I try cyan (blue) + M205... and if that's not working out, up to UC. You don't wanna go straight to the harshest option, as you might be chipping away at more clear coat than you intended.

For wax, I use Collinite 845. Only a thin layer is needed... so the bottle should last you a life time if you're not running a detailing business. I used to apply it by hand until my arm fell off lmao. I now use the GG6 with a crimson pad on a low speed setting.

To maintain swirl-free, always hand wash the car using the good old 2 bucket method.

1. Keep the dirty water in one bucket, and the clean soap in another.
2. But before you do anything, always spray down the car with a pressurized water gun/hose first to get off as much loose dirt as possible.
3. Use a microfibre washmitt to apply soap (multiple if car is really dirty). Apply soap in a top-down fashion.
4. Rinse the soap off.
5. Dry with microfibre towels as well... I currently use Costco yellow ones, but I might switch to something else next year.
   
   If you want/need to apply wax...
6. Painter's-tape off all plastic trim.
7. Apply wax by hand or by polisher on a low speed setting with a very mild pad.
8. Buff off wax by hand using a microfibre towel.

I don't have any interior regimen at the moment... and for wheels I painstakingly use another washmitt on areas you can see at the end of step 3. If you have a lot of brake dust you might want to find a better solution for this as it may ruin your wash mitt... such as wheel brushes and such. I found wheel woolies/brushes to be very expensive though... so I never bothered. I also don't use any tire shine products at the moment. I haven't found one that's cheap, not retardedly shiny, and doesn't fling all over the place once you drive off.

Once I get a bit more money in the bank, I'll be buying 303A, Lexol, and Stoner Invisible Glass Cleaner for the interior. For getting rid of dust on the dash/seats... I don't use anything fancy; just a microfibre towel.

Just need to pick up that GG orbital polisher and pads then some Collinite. All the other products you mentioned are what I have. Plus Meguiars claybar and quick detailer...

When I'm washing I'll keep the claybar in my pocket and do a quick hit on spots that need it.

I love my waffle weave microfiber cloths for drying!!
you can buy them in large rectangles instead of the smaller rectangles that normal microfiber cloths come in.

the waffle weave actually helps hold water more than a normal microfiber cloth.

I have 3 of them. and makes short work of drying vehicles.
