trans is going no more warranty - HELP

I have a 99 TL.

The transmission had issues when I first got it. They didn't replace it but they replaced some parts in the transmission. I dont know what but I remember them saying something about a filter and something else?

Now when I drive it skips very hard like its trying to change gears but just wont. It sort of jumps.
I drove it for maybe 7-8 more blocks and it started getting worse. When I try to accelerate the RPM rise but the car doesn't go, then after hesitating again the car moves.

I'm going to get it towed somewhere but I don't know where. Its not under warranty anymore and I need to get the work done to it but not at the dealer :-(

I'm in Maryland does anybody have any suggestions?

well teh TL doesnt have a filter on the tranny to replace with out removing the whole tranny and if they are going to do that they would replace it.
so are you over 100k?

Interesting. As far as I know, dealerships aren't authorized to open up the transmission, much less rebuild it or replace parts.

Don't drive it; if you have to, keep the speed low. How many miles on the car? FYI, '99 has the 100,000-mile extended transmission warranty. Even if you're over that mileage, it is such a common problem that Acura might be willing to work with you. Last guy who had a failed transmission after the warranty was up, he just paid for the parts and the dealership did the work for free on good faith.

Give your Acura Zone Representative a friendly call and see what they can do for you.

Good luck, man. Sorry to hear.

I know about that extended warranty but im at 109,000

I called and bitched about the EGR valve and they didnt even cover that. I paid maybe 500 for everything and I took it to another ACURA dealer to find out AFTER I paid that it was under recall and it was supposed to be done at no cost.
I called the dealer and they weren't een trying to give me that money back thats why I think that they won't cover it.

The dealers here are terrible.

I havent been driving it and I want to get it towed but I just don't know where or what to do exactly. I don't want to get it towed to the dealer and then they say no way jose.

Im just stuck right now

Whoa!! Hold up. They made you pay for something that should've been done at no cost, and they won't refund the money?

Call Acura Corporate NOW. File a case and let them know what happened. They will open an investigation for you.

As for the transmission, you're only 9k miles over. Call Acura Corporate and talk to them about it.

I called and filed a claim and basically what happened was this:
at the time that the egr valve's messup it was still covered. but i had to get other stuff done to my car so i couldnt get it then.

i ended up getting it later over the whatver thousand period.

i faxed a letter and all the info to american honda and they didnt do anything they stated that the miles where over

my friends where saying just to take it to acura and bitch until they fix it. the dealers here are shitty though they dont really care

What is this "other stuff" that you had to get done? Was it something that the dealership had to perform, but they couldn't do it at the time?

If the delay was the dealership's fault, then you are still eligible for the warranty work. Why? Because you presented the problem to their attention when it was still under warranty, and from there it is their responsbility to fix it.

So if that is the case, keep fighting it. If you have to, get a lawyer. It will cost a couple of hundred bucks at the most to have the lawyer draft a letter on your behalf, and that usually gets things in motion. Don't give up, man. It's not your fault that these things happened. Both the EGR and the transmission problems are widespread, well-documented cases, so Acura should at least accommodate you half way or something.

I would be seriously pissed off at the dealership and Acura for their lack of motivation to help a customer, if I were in your situation. Last time that happened (at a GMC dealership for my dad's car), I fucking went off on them and they finally came to terms with me. Don't give up.

Good luck, man.

This is a very interesting topic. I wish I had discovered this forum before I purchased my 99 TL! I just got it a month ago, and I can definitely feel what so many other posts here describe, ie: gears that do not shift properly. My car has 95.000 miles on it, I just spoke with my dealer and they said that yes, they will take care of it and they will install a new transmission for free. However, I also read about the many users that had multiple problems with the replacement trannys... So what do you guys recommend? Should I go ahead and have it replaced? Should this, in theory, fix the problem once and for all, or can I expect this to become a recurring nightmare? My symptons are very subtle as of right now, only some slight hesitation between 2nd and 3rd, and rough shifting only when the car is pushed real hard. But once the car has been running for about 25 minutes everything seems to be fine and the gears shift smoothly, specially when I'm using the manual mode. Are these the usual signs that the tranny is dying?

Is it true that the tranny's are the big problem for TL ?

I have 113 k miles on my '99. I got it from a guy when it had 110 k. Now I notice a problem ( or what seems to be a problem ). When the car is cold I have no problems shifting from P to D. However , After like 40 miles ( and I'm not pushing it ) when I stop and shift again from P to D ( or even P to R ) it rocks back and forth and I hear a clanking noise. If I don't keep my foot on the brake for at least 3 seconds when shifting from P to D it studders really bad before mooving.
But only after like 20-40 miles of driving. When cold it's very smooth. Shold I fear the worst ? The fluid is at the level and very clean. I think that latelly it doesn't have that kick anymore when i hit the gas.
Anyone had a problem like this before ?

In response to your title - the tranny does have issues mostly with 2000-2002 TLs' - not all TLs are effected and fewer 99 have this issue however, it does happen.

The thing that worryes me is the " hot car" connection. When the car is cold ( in the morning ) it shifts from park to drive very smooth. Only after 40 miles it shifts from park to drive like my old Oldsmobile 88 use to ( with a back and forth movement and a thump )
I also think that after 40 miles of driving it doesn't have that kick when you hit the gas ( the downshift ). I also got the feeling from reading the forum ( what a great thing , by the way ) that the tranny's for the '99 model do not have that many problems. Is it because it's a 4 speed ?
It is not an issue with the brake lights, that's for sure. The thing is , my wife's '03 Mustang has smoother shifting when hot. That's unacceptable.
Other than that I love the car , it's trully a Sport Sedan.
Thank you guys for all the help. Should I take it to the dealer ?

My 02 TL shows some problem again on the replaced tranny.
When it's not warmed up, it cranks when shifting from p to d. Also, car bounces back and forth even brake padal is stepped on.
When I get on the road and drive, it seems like 2nd to 3rd gear, it shifts very hardly that I can feel some bounce and rattle/vibration? After a long drive, the car drives fine though. this is the same symptoms that I had before when my last tranny was going bad and I am like 90% sure that it will go bad. The thing is that my mileage is 10,3000 as of today. Would I be covered by warranty even it is over 100,000 miles? When I called the dealership in Des Moines, IA, the guy I talked was kinda bitch. When i asked him if I will be covered, he said "I don't think so". Should I contact the Acura Headquarter office? It's very stressful to drive a nice TL with fear that it may stop anytime.

Umm.. I actually drove more than 20,000 on the replacement tranny. So, am I not covered?
I called the Acura customer service and they said it is hard to tell if I will be covered under warranty or not before they actually inspect it and to get it inspected, I have to pay $250 or so. If the result comes out as bad tranny, then they will credit it back to me, which I feel like it's not going to happen, because every time I take it to the dealer the problem is just gone while they test-drive it.
Very stressful.

well if you are over 100k and have more than 12k on the tranny wether it gets covered under warranty ultimatly comes up to acura. It would be nice if the replacements came with a 100k warranty but they dont

I think that these transmissions should have lifetime warranties because Honda has made it very clear that they won't TRULY fix them. They will band-aid them, but they're ignoring the clutchpack issues.

Oh well. The 100k mile warranty is nice and more than you might get from some other manufacturer, but truth be known - they should just fix the damn thing.

I've recently noticed an abundance of Gen2's on used car lots. Wonder why?
