Starter or ??????

Hey guys, last night I got home from work last night and started my car and got nothing!! everything else was on but the engine, after about ten minutes and me beating up the ignition it started and everything was good........This morning I got out to start my car and tryed the same technic and it would not start, I tried for more then 30 mins and nothing!!! So now my question is, is it the starter or could it be the chip in the key or ????????????????????

Do you see the green immobilizer key flashing when you stick it in the ignition? Do you get any noise out of the starter at all?

But you have full power to like the radio or headlights?

Id say its either the ignition or starter.

OK thanks, so is there any self test I can do to determine where the problem lies? Or should I just take it to my local mechanic and let him tell me what is wrong? Then when I find out whats wrong, is there any DIY's on here for installing a new starter or ignition?? (sorry for all the questions)

Perhaps your ignition switch is failing.

There was an ignition switch recall that might apply to your car. Call Acura with your VIN number and ask about it. Or you can also check the listed recall items online on Acura's Owner Link.

My 1999 TL is on its third ignition switch. The first one was replaced under the recall and the second one started acting up recently.

I don't know of any easy test but there should be a test procedure in the Helm factory service manual.

By the way, the Helm manual is a worthwhile investment that can pay for itself in a single repair.

Thanks Bob, the recall your referring to was done in 2002 and I called Acura and they will not do it again if that is indeed the problem, is it an expensive repair?? I know I really need to invest in a Helms manual..

Yes, I was in the same boat. I called Acura and was told that they would only replace it once.

I just replaced my ignition switch myself and the part itself was about $50 shipped. I struggled a bit with the replacement since the Helm manual did not reveal a third "mystery" screw holding a plastic shield in place. (So even the Helm manual, which is excellent, can miss something.)

For more information on that, see this thread:

Cool, thanks, also since I don't have the manual can you please tell me where I can find the starter, want to give it a bang or two, just in case it is the starter I could at least get it started and then take it to my mechanic.

Open hood. Stand infront of car looking down, straight across from the battery where the trans and motor meet up. (follow the battery cable down if you have a hard time seeing it, which you shouldnt)

unhook wires from starter, remove 2 bolts, slide starter out, reverse for install. Its very very easy.
