Overheating!!

Ah guys, got an overheating problem. At idle with no movement, the temp shoots up to just under red.

When I put the heater on high or start driving, the temps immediately return to normal. There is a full reservoir of coolant, which is not normal (usually half full).

Any ideas??

any coolant leaking? the overflow in your coolant reservior sounds like a bad thermostat. the fact that the temp drops while you drive is strange though. could be a leak causing a loss in pressure in your cooling system. Is your CEL on?

both fans work, no CEL, and yea, the coolant level in the overflow tank is rather high, about a 1/2 inch from the top.

How can I check that? Just by taking the cap off?

Yes, remove the cap. If you haven't done that before, you'll want to do that with the engine cool. People get burned all the time...

your thermostat is gone, probably stuck shut. Either that or someone poured extra collant into your overflow.

I have the same problem. Sitting at idle for more than 10 min causes temp to rise and I start to get detonation until I drive a little and temp cools down. Is that the thermostat or water pump?

Did you have work done previously? Could be an air pocket.
Hopefully you didn't drive the car overheated for a prolonged time. Then, you could possibly have a leaky headgasket. Does your coolant boil inside your resevoir during or when you turn off your car?

for the record, the problem is solved

I disconnected all of the coolant hoses. I flushed everything out (hoses, radiator, coolant inlet and outlet, and resevoir). I alos replaced the themorstat, which was nice and easy (two bolts right under the throttle body).

everything now works perfectly. also, for all those having over heating issues, MAKE SURE that there is a hose connected to the inside cap of the overflow resevoir.

Thanks for the update. Do you suspect any particular thing as the cause?

if your thermostat is closed shut your car will overheat quickly. Get it replaced.

The thermostat has a pellet inside of it which melts at certain temp to let u know that the temp is rising. With the age of the car usually theses pellets get stuck and causes you too FREAK OUT because you think you car is about to blow up!!! i had the exact same problem and fix it by replacing my coolant system rad, upper/lower hoses, and thermo. Problem has yet to occur again for about 2 weeks everything was done almost a month ago.

This may sound stupid, but i had the same problem and thought it could be a number of things. I had the system pressure tested and everything was ok...no leaks. But I replaced the radiator cap which looked like it was leaking and topped the coolant off and I haven't had a problem since. I bought a NAPA cap for something like $5 and everythings great.
