5th gear, is this normal?

I finally decided to start a thread on something that kind of bothers me. I do mostly city driving in my TL-S so I cruise at 35-40 a lot. The tranny will go through all gears all the way to 5th which is annoying at 35 miles an hour! It starts to bog down of course until I step on the gas to get it to shift to 3rd or 4th.

So should I have this checked out or is it normal?

So far no CELs, tranny slippage etc.

that speed is to low for it to sustain 5th. Drive in 4th instead. I find it strange that it would go in at 35, but mine did all teh time around 40. Just leave it in 4th when having to drive those speeds.

yeah thats what i've done the past week or so. is the tranny ecu to blame for something like that?

i'm going to pay more close attention, but i do think there are time when it won't hit 5th when i have it in D5. more often than not it does.

How do you know it's in 5th ? Maybe you're just feeling the torque converter lock-up jerk.

Hmm, I've wondered this too, especially since I'm on tranny #2. I did notice the car running better while in D4 when I am driving on side streets and then if I know I will sustain 45-50mph or more for a while, I'll knock it up to D5....I may go back to doing that again!

Oh I know because the tach will be at like 1200 and it bogs down bad! Plus it vibrates too. D4 seems to be the trick. When I get to this one particular road with a limit of 50 I put it into D5 because I drive 60 of course!

I noticed on the way to work today that even at 50MPH in D5 I get the annoying bogged down vibration feeling.

Well you can ask the dealer. It shouldnt be going in at 35. just over 40 yes. But if your doing alot of traveling at those speeds you really should just keep it in 4th until you plan on driving faster. The bogged down and vibration are its just to low of a gear ratio to power.

Right, which is how I noticed in the first place.

My car won't shift to 5th until it's almost 50mph, and it will goes back from 5th to 4th when I drive slower than 40mph. I think it's a good idea to get your car checked cause it shouldn't stay in 5th at 35mph.

for my TLS it goes into 5th at 50mph/80kph, and will downshift when it hits 40mph/60kph.

Havent done the seafoam treatment yet. I've been so flippin busy and I recently had the oil changed with Mobil 1. So I wanted to wait until it was time for another oil change.

I had it in D5 this morning and it didn't seem to do it. I'm going to see if it does it on the way home tonight. My car is going to Acura tomorrow to get the door pillars replaced so I might mention it.
