Type S... is it really that big of a deal?

I was in a Pull-a-Part today and they have a couple 02 TL Type-S cars that are complete with engine/transmission. First thing I want to verify is that the transmission is the same B7WA that comes in the base model??? Second thing... If I were to swap this in to one of my CLs or TLs, I would need both the under hood harness and the under dash harness??? The last thing... Is the Type-S really so much better than the base that I really need to pull the required parts and do the swap? I have both a 2nd Gen TL Type-S and a 3rd Gen TL Type-S, but I haven't driven either of them as they both need transmissions (bought them that way). I know it's a lot of work. I wonder if it's worth it. Realize that Pull-a-Part only charges about $500 for an engine/transmission combo...

While you were at the salvage yard, did you notice if they had any 06-07 Accord V6's or 01-02 MDX's?

FYI the transmission is slightly different between the two, as the base model has the speed sensitive pressure regulator for the power steering. The Type-S tranny doesn't (and neither does an AV6).

I'm a little confused by your question because you talk about swapping Type-S drivetrain into base model TL, but then say you have two Type-S TLs that you're working on.

congrats on having two generations of type-s TL's AND on having a local junkyard where you can pick up a transmission for a very good price. I would research the most popular thread in the second generation forum: the AV6 swap FAQ.

https://acurazine.com/forums/second-...n-swap-905115/

This is the transmission that you want to put into your 2G type-s.

If your cars only need transmissions, why not just search for replacing that component? the engines in Honda/Acura cars hold up very well and you will more than likely not gain any benefit switching out the engine.

The 4th and 5th gear ratios are also different on the Type-S transmission:

4th - 0.727 vs 0.653 (TL-P)
5th - 0.520 vs 0.470 (TL-P)

The AV6 has the same gear ratios as the TL-S transmission.

The 03 Type-S that I own was trailered to my location. I haven't driven it. I drove the 07 Type-S about 200 miles to my location but I drove it very gingerly. It had 2 bent rims (didn't know what the vibration was until I got it home) and it is leaking fluids from every conceivable crevice. I need to drop the engine/transmission and work on it before I really drive it.

So, I haven't really felt the difference between the P and the Type-S yet for myself, hence the question...

Yeah dude. I've done the AV swap on my base model 2G TL. I also currently own 4 TLs, a CL and a Honda Odyssey. All of them except for the Honda have over 200K miles on them. I know how well the engines hold up.

Thanks man! I appreciate the info. Doesn't the Type-S engine generate more HP?

Yes. 260 hp vs 225 hp on the TL-P.

Type S and H.P.

I recently bought a 2002 TL Type S, surprised how quick it is. And 26 mpg. I know if I had the 220 hp version, I would long for a Type S. But that's just me. I'm a child of the '50's and 60's, and affordability, engine less than 200 cubes, 260 horsepower and good mileage still doesn't compute. Wish I would have bought a used Acura years ago. Bought the car from next door neighbor. Acura must be bulletproof; was a daily driver for 2 of their kids while away at college, so 8 yrs. of beating on it, and it still runs good. That says a lot for Acura engineering. However...will be glad when I shrink the pile of small problems it has. Blower motor and transistor, front motor mount, working on power steering leak now and other small items; however, am enjoying, and not dreading, tinkering on cars again, and for me, that is a blessing.. Also dig all of the info. on this site, it's a big help for me. You all have a great weekend.
