SS Meter

Hey guys,
I was thinking that it would be awesome if the SS indicator was on at all times even when driving without it so you know which gear the car is running in. Is there any mods that will allow it to run even when not in SS?

Thanks!

That would be great... I thought of that too. Can't be that hard. Maybe there's a relay somewhere that turns it on when you slide the shifter to SS... any of you guys with the shop manual have electrical diagrams or anything?

I don't see a reason for anyone needing that. Almost all the time that I'm in auto, I pretty much know what gear I'm in. I never drove stick before (practiced on my brothers Geo Spectrum ) but I still feel the car shifting, or just by looking at your speed and the rpm you can figure out what gear you are in.

I guess I can hack it!... I have the Helms manual. And, I think I can all the time can enable the SS indicator instead of the D5!

I spent some 20 mins with the HLMES manual and I think I can give you what you want ...

Pro: You get what you want. The LED is enabled all the time.
Con: The D5 indicator is used for Tranny Diagnosis startup tranny self-test. Disabling the D5 indicator will let you lose this feature.

I can do a 3 wa selcetor. LED is enable all the time, LED is diabled all the time, or OEM setting.... So you lose nothing!!

It's good to be an EE.

Instead of doing that, I think I have a better idea:

Line up 5 LEDs across the top of the dash somewhere.

1st gear will lit up the 1st LED
2nd gear will lit up 1st and 2nd LED
3rd gear will lit up 3 LEDs
so on and on, you get the idea...

You can even make another (perhaps red) LED below each gear LED. So when the RPM hits the "pre-determined range" the red LED will lit up, you shift up. The red LED stays on, but now 1st and 2nd gear LED are on. You accelerate until the 2nd red comes up, then you shift up....

That'd make it look like those LED you see on F1 steering wheel.

Or even make a series of LEDs that'd lit up for each 1000 RPM. The possibility is endless....?

Anyone figured out how to keep the sport shift LED gear indicator lit up during normal driving (not sport shift)? Without comprimising the diagnostics too!

In 1981 my sister had a Honda CVCC and it had a shift indicator just under the spedometer and it was a automatic transmission.
